Loafers!
No coat.
Easy pants. A top that's nicd but not precious or will get stretched out yanking on & off.
For shoe store I wear my own sheer knee- highs, but it's also good to take a trouser sock or similar for trying on.

Very interesting about NYC! Too bad I have no trip planned and this will not be going to Dover Street Market :(

But ok, what is 'easy off'?

I occasionally take off the leggings, but normally don't find they interfere.

A lot of Birks! Some oxfords. The best couple I saw were both about in their 50s. The woman wearing a white eyelet cotton blouse and full skirt and some sort of flat shoes. And her man was wearing charcoal bermudas, a same color short sleeve collared button up shirt and a scarf and also sandals.

I saw a few people in heels when I was going to Les Mis (we were so crossing our fingers to win the Hamilton lottery but did not) but otherwise not elsewhere.

Dover Street Market was a blast and I highly recommend going there. It is 7 fairly small floors with Japanese-leaning designers, except that the top floor has all the current over the top Gucci stuff. They have the best sunglasses ever and if I had not bought two Krewe pairs this summer I might have splurged. I was very pleased by the staff who were not pushy and did not get all judgy as to whether you might buy something or not.** However, even the 70 percent off end of season sale they were having was expensive. i liked a pair of blue velvet things that were sort of a cross between knickers and harems but my daughter pointed out that I would really not be able to wear them very many places and certainly not in Keene NH and forbade me to buy them. And I lusted over some Junya Watanabe spiked triceratops looking clog /mules and I might really have bought them had my size been available.

** my most hated stores are the ones where salespeople not very subtly look at your shoes first and if they are not expensive then forget the good treatment

Interesting NYC report Lisa- thanks. I too refuse to wait for a fitting room, and the minute I'm hot - it's game over. I have the Dover Street Market on my list of things to see/do next time I'm in NYC (and yes, I imagine I'll just be looking )

What were those women wearing on their feet with the white dresses and tops?

I have gotten terrible at in-person shopping. I was in NYC last weekend, this time for college visits, and my daughter and I did a lot of poking around Greenwich Village, the Meatpacking District, Soho and Fifth Avenue. I bought nothing. I really wanted some stuff from the fantastic Dover Street Market but it was largely out of my price range. She bought one thing and had an excellent consult that resulted in two perfect-for-her lipsticks from Nars in the Village.

I get cranky if I have to wait for a fitting room, or if I am too hot or too cold and have to change clothes, or if the stuff on the racks is less than pristine (I'm looking at you, COS). So I came home and ordered two white dresses to check out from Madewell, because the most impressive people I saw on the streets this visit were wearing white cotton blouses or dresses. I will try those on in the comfort of my closet later.

Lisa, thanks. You just made me smile!

I've learned that, no matter what the season, I need to dress in something super-lightweight to prevent overheating. If it's cold out, and I'll be walking between stores, I'm better off wearing a vest instead of a jacket; a vest protects me from the chill but is well-ventilated.

I'm fond of easy on, easy off...I'll usually go for a nice te (for the keeping cool factor) and a pair of jeans. I agree with Joyce; comfy shoes are a must!

Like your under armor style, rachylou, and you're ready to go! That's smart thinking, so the neckline is good to go, as are the leggings. Do you scrunch them up if you're trying on a dress, or take them off?

Don't forget a protein bar, cashews or a snack, if you need it.

I agree with lots of these tips-- never a heavy coat. Easy on easy off (especially shoes!). Wear two pieces, not a dress. Bring nice shoes if needed for trying on nicer items. Carry a comfortable bag.

Easy on - easy off is a great suggestion. Sometimes it depends on what I am looking for. If I am shopping for tops, I will wear black pants (because much of my wardrobe is black) so I know how it will look when I wear it. I try to wear shoes that are easy to put on and take off - no laces, for example. And for serious shopping, I never wear a coat inside, even when it is freezing outdoors. I tend to overheat and a coat is heavy to carry around.

Overall, Rachy, your combo of leggings and a tank seems perfect.

I try not to wear layers. Easy to pull off and on. Panties that don't show panty-lines. If I'm really organized and I know I'm going to be looking for shoes, skirts or dresses I bring the appropriate socks/hose. There's nothing worse than trying on a skirt or dress and then having to squint your eyes to visualize what it would look like with the correct supporting act.

Not a dress! No shoes to lace.

I like to dress in something I feel good in. That way I can tell if what I'm trying on makes me feel better than what I wore to the store. If not, it doesn't make the cut.

In my coat thread from last year's NAS, I noticed my shopping attire. *Ahem* basically looks like underwear, lol. I'd forgotten about this get up. For a major shop, I wear leggings and a close fitting tank so I can just pull things over to try on. Minimize the production.

Thoughts on attire for marathon shops?
