Thanks Louise and Maya.

You know the dress you both the way you and the model are wearing it Maya looks like it would be at my natural waist! I don't even think of that as a DW. Nevertheless I think you are right that I had worn that one too low.

Louise I certainly have some pear tendencies in that I carry any extra weight below the waist and on my bottom and thighs. However I have quite a strong shoulder line. That dress makes my hips (which are not that wide) look much wider because of the way it balloons out above the elastic.
Anyway I think I'll give up any thought of DW. While one like Angie's might work, it is a bit formal for my lifestyle and I suspect too hot for my climate.

The purple cinch waist dress I wore in my guest blog post is a drop waist style, similar to the one you wore in the sense that the waist is elasticized. i can wear it either pulled down, or scrunched up as in the photo. I'm not actually sold on how that picture came out. I think it looks MUCH better IRL and I have received many compliments on it.

This is how it looks on the 88 pound model:

http://www.yesstyle.com/en/yum.....1021237957

The one in your picture seems awfully low. I mean, low even for a drop waist. I like a DW best when it hits at my hip bone. You might have better luck trying a more structured version as Louise mentioned.

Anne perhaps you need a more structured drop waist dress like Angie's. The one you posted looks a bit floaty with an elasticated waist i'd be worried it would pop up over the hips to the waist leaving you exposed (think you're pear like me and that's the problem i have) x

San and Louise,
Angie does look good but I am not convinced I am. I think you are right about skimming rather than grabbing at the hips, but I think for me it it mostly a matter of proportion.

I have just downloaded the photo I mentioned above http://i297.photobucket.com/al.....0_7653.jpg

I have always loved the look of a drop waist dress and I hope you find one that you love. Doesn't Angie have a grey one that she showed us on the blog. It does not have the little girly gathers and is more of a mod 60's look.
I went looking for the picture of Angie in her drop waist dress and it was on the blog on 9-29-09. It wouldn't copy for me, but you can look for it if you want to see a drop waist dress that skims rather than grabing onto the hips. At least in my humble opinion it does.

Think it depends on body shape, i'm pear and have always avoided these however would the work as voluminous with skinnies? probably one for Angie to cast the deciding vote x

It all depend on your body shape.. for me I know it doesn't work (I have tried), I'm hourglass and those dresses call the attention to the hips and not to the waist.

Thanks Garmenta
Here is the post you were thinking of.
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....long-torso.

I have to say that I only really like the first one you posted, and that is probably because it is empire waisted as well.

I tried on a summer drop waist dress recently and it justified the skepticism of Angie and Maya. (I have taken a photo, so will show it when I get a chance to download) Angie reckons I am not (primarily) a pear shape anymore but I sure looked like it in that dress!
Mind you I am VERY long waisted and short legged, so of course these could work on other people, just not me.

I wish I could find the post that got me thinking--you posted a picture of your little girl in a pink jersey drop-waisted dress and wondered if the same thing would work for you. I was in my local Marshall's yesterday and saw Max Studio jersey dresses with--drop waists! I checked the Max Studio website and they have more of them for this season.

Like this (maybe not in pink plaid!)
http://www.maxstudio.com/cgi-b.....;color=RED

Or this:
http://www.maxstudio.com/cgi-b.....r=AUBERGIN

Or this:
http://www.maxstudio.com/cgi-b.....r=SLTDTJAC

Or this:
http://www.maxstudio.com/cgi-b.....r=QRTFLRDN

They also have a number of tunic-y dresses with lower, blouson waists, too. Take a look!
