I know I always suggest Seasalt Cornwall but their dresses are really fabulous.

The Belle dress is lovely. I own it in a floral and always get compliments when wearing it. All cotton, lined, can wear a bra with it.

this one looks interesting:https://www.seasaltcornwall.co.....neck-dress

anyway, they have a lot of great dresses. Natural fibers, well cut.

All the suggestions are great — even when the specific item isn’t right for me, it often leads me to explore a retail stone I had not yet turned. :-)

DonnaF, I can’t lie — the inclusion of pockets on a dress that fits and flatters me is a big bonus. It’s rare for me to find good pockets — I’m wide in the hip and many pockets draw more volume and attention to an area where I want less!

I love that we have varying requirements. I avoid sleeveless and breezy because I run so cold; I have a few tops that can fill that need. But have you ever tried to find a SLEEVED casual dress that actually fit and flattered? I actually did towards the end of last season so I’m actually set for this year. I just wish that all dresses with ease over the hips came with pockets. And for me, a good memory to check them for tissues before I stuck them in the wash.

Hang in there! Your dilemma was mine this time last year, and by the end of the summer I'd found what I wanted and needed by expanding where I was willing to look.

Standbys like Boden and Anthro are less attractive to me today than before. Hard for me to pinpoint why. (Age? Change in quality? Change in taste?) Less familiar (to me) shops like Ralph Lauren and Ann Taylor are feeling attractive.

I hope you're able to enjoy the search and I wish you good luck.

I have just been scrolling through dresses online and have the same complaints Janet.

I bought this dress at the end of last year at Talbots, just had the chance to wear it last week and love it! I particularly like that it zips at the back so no gaping at the bust.

I havent bought a dress in several years since they aren't called for more than a few times a year - BUT - my favorites are all Boden.

Boden tends toward small prints, but here are a few that might be of interest? Some are on sale for 30% off right now. The quality is excellent! If you don't like the longer sleeve, that would be an easy alteration.

Seems like many of us are feeling the frustration!

I like the idea of casual dresses in summer for simplicity — minimal fabric touching my body, air flow, but also more pulled together looking than yet another shorts-and-tee look. Especially since I don’t love showing my legs anyway. Most pants are too warm much of the time. Skirts and tops are also in my rotation, but sometimes you just want that throw-on-and-go ease of a dress, you know? No worries about whether a top length plays well with a skirt, whether to tuck or tie, etc. But dresses are just not all that easy to get right for my specific body type. I would have way more options if I wore knee-baring lengths or could get away with spaghetti straps, but alas, that is not my fate!

Yes, anything with a tier or ruffle is not my preference either. This dress looks like a good option for you. I like the empire waistline for summer and think it can be dressed up or down. I wouldn’t mind having a skirt or dress for going out, but it’s not a real pressing need, either. I am finally set for bottoms and have some nice Bermuda shorts are surprisingly versatile. When I was working I wore them as a suit with heels.

Oh, bummer. One nice thing about Universal Standard is they have a link to the specific garment measurements in the description - if you missed it it’s called “View the product size guide.” I find that really helpful so I can think about how much ease I want in specific areas.

Just, this.

I think I’m mostly resigned, or more positively, committed, to wearing separates- midi skirts & various tops— but sometimes I just get a hankering for a real dress!!

I have an upcoming party for friend’s’ anniversary celebration and will likely have to wear one of my skirts with something , but even there want a nicer top, not sparkly but more summer garden- party.

But for dresses, I have so many criteria— short or 3/4 sleeve, crew or boat neck, below knee, no sheaths, no fitted skirts, no ruffles or poufs, pretty limited range of colors or patterns. A Unicorn!

But still I browse in hope.

Janet, the dress you shared is beautiful and I think it would look great on you!

Feeling a lot what Kelly said ... everything feels like something I've already worn ... usually when styles come back around they are re-invented, but I'm feeling that less lately ... as Kelly says maybe it's my age, or maybe it's because thrifting is so popular, or maybe there's just no fresh ideas at the moment! In any case that side vent is just to say, well done being picky, despite the frustration. It's a reflection of what's available as far as I can tell *sigh*

Aquamarine, I would love a good solid color dress but have a very hard time finding a cut that works in my preferred colors these days. I love EF colors but the styles do absolutely nothing for my body — I feel very unfab in them, unfortunately. I think they are not cut great for an hourglass who is narrow through the waist. I just look like a big box. Sad because they look so breezy and easy on others! Something about scoop necks is not working well for me these days either. Yes, I’m super picky lately! LOL

I still try to wear a frock twice a week but finding dresses or skirts has been next to impossible. I do best thrifting . The older ones are better made and I like the shift style with no zippers to try to reach. My other successful dresses are all EF. They are simple and have some length. The last dress I bought was from a consignment store, dressy and no print. I was attracted to the color. I like dresses that can be worn as a duster and have some for all seasons from wool to linen. The woolen one now needs a trip to the cleaners before seasonal storage. Time to get out the linen as it has long sleeves. It is an EF denim colored linen.
I am lookinhg for a coral summer dress but so far have not found one.
Two piece dresses are ideal but hard to find .

It seems you’re more into print dresses? I realize it’s probably not your style, but I’m starting to accumulate some Eileen Fisher dresses and have been so pleased. They don’t seem to need any foundation garments, thankfully. I have this one in the blue, but thought of you when I saw the teal:

Good dresses are difficult to find, I sympathise with your frustration! I am looking for a summer dress for an upcoming trip and just placed an order for a Zara dress and a matching top and skirt, but don't have high hopes. I even tried the light blue linen Cos dress that was in Angie's picks but it was not a good look on me.

Janet, fair enough re thinking things through — one of those hard to discern the exact tone on the internet moments I think. It does seem like the dress under consideration would mesh with your current collection and expand the color palette a bit. I think the flowers are your shades of burgundy- so I suspect it will all hinge on whether the background color works. Fingers crossed for you!

Suz, I love the print on Christina's dress! Bummed that it didn't work for you. Sad to say I can tell the cut will not work for me either -- something about that gathered waist I have learned is not my friend in the least, and belting doesn't improve it.

I do like that shirtdress in the shades of orange and would try it if I saw it, even though those warm colors are not the slam dunk on me that cooler colors are. I cannot tell where Zara's sizing is these days. No mediums are available, and I'm not sure if I need a L in that, so unsure about ordering it online. The sleeve length gives me pause too, but it is not a hard alteration if everything else works.

To Sarah's point about *needing* any dresses this year... well, no, strictly speaking, I don't need any. I can get through the season with what I have. Some of my old ones are getting a little shabby, or are not what I'm interested in wearing anymore. I have a couple that are more properly in the realm of beach coverups; a couple that require a strapless bra so are not so easy-to-throw-on. And what's left in the casual department are a couple of black dresses and my Zero + Maria Cornejo dress, which I LOVE but would like a little more variety than that. I got rid of most of my old more fitted knit dresses, but might still have one or two in the holding zone. They might work again, now that my weight is down a bit, but I'm not sure I'll be feeling those styles anymore -- I'm liking breezier styles these days, but that seems to be hard to find without a lot of extra volume, which I'm not so interested in. Below is what I currently have. I love the Altuzarra but it's a little dressier than everyday, IYKWIM.

It's a perennial problem, it seems! Almost every year, one or more of us (usually a lot more!) are on the hunt but not finding. I haven't bought a summer dress since 2018 or maybe 2019...and I had to retire several this year. So I'm on the hunt for them, too. So far, finding a lot in earth tones, black, etc. that don't work for me. I'm flexible to an extent on style but don't want body con/ clingy and do want natural fibre.

I did buy this one, from Zara. I don't usually care for tiers but on this dress, they serve to rein in the extreme volume and seem to work well on me.

I tried the dress Christina bought for Morocco. I love it but it does not love me, alas. The fabric is gorgeous. I also tried a few more from Zara that you saw. Sadly, they didn't work on me (colour on one, quality on the other.)

I would like at least one more summer dress but if it is not to be had, I'll be on the lookout for a few more skirts to add. I want to stock up on midis while the getting is possible.

I hope the Anthro one works out for you. Good for you, for sending it back for quality. I think it's important we do that.

Thanks, everyone! In a way it's reassuring that it's not just me that is underwhelmed with current choices, but I'm also bummed that we are not seeing more variety.

Kelly, I wish the Zara dress had been cut higher under the arm -- it was too low for my short torso and showed too much of my bra for my liking. And it was very roomy too! I don't mind a roomy fit if the other details work for me, but it just missed the mark.

Allora, yes! It's either too twee or too boxy and shapeless or too young and bare. And the colors, sigh.

Lisa and Irina, absolutely agree with not settling for a placeholder. For the price of this Anthro dress, I will not settle. I've got to really like it, and I'll take into account whether my husband likes it too.

Cat2, do you have any links? I've only seen Natori sleepwear and lingerie, never dresses. I like their prints.

Angie, bummer about the pink dress! But your others are perfect for you. Sleeves are not usually the best for our summers -- chances are that if a dress has sleeves, it's too warm for my preference. I've seen some sleeved dresses that *could* work because they're breezy enough, but other details were not right. I'd be open to sleeves but they need to be loose and light!

Nadya, that's actually a really nice dress. I only have one piece by US -- a long sleeved tee that I do like. They seem to cut a little wider through the body for me (accomodating for bust often means that I have to take in waists), but it would be possibly worth checking out. Unfortunately, the best color for me is sold out in my size, I think (I don't know whether one should size up or down in their stuff if you're between sizes, but I'm inclined to think sizing down in that dress would be the way to go, as long as the bust is adequate).

Sarah, I'm not talking myself into it so much as thinking it through. It's not my normal color palette, and that would be my biggest hurdle, other than the weird stitching issue. The cut is quite nice on me, I think -- not TOO boho. It's a slight empire waist but not extreme, which I don't do, to ChristelJ's point. I can do a gentle empire waist -- too high and it emphasizes the boobs too much. I am so short from shoulder to waist that an empire cut can almost seem like a normal waist on me, LOL. Even my pilates instructor has noticed how short that part of me is!

I appreciate all the comments! I suspect that I'll get more feedback when I receive the new one and try it on with pics.

I love that sleeve style - it's very flattering! I think easy dresses can be difficult in general and much of the clothing I see on line doesn't look very fresh. I'm not sure if it's just because of my age and I've seen it all before or whether it's all more of the same. I really liked that Zara dress on you but this one looks more in line with your boho lite vibe. It's early in the season though so maybe some more options will be coming down the line.

I hear you!

I have been on the lookout for a summer-y dress that I could dress up or down depending on the need (i.e, summer wedding or party vs. casual dinner). I agree that the pickings are slim. Walking through stores all I can think of is little house on the prairie. I need something more fitted for my hourglass figure and if all on offer is not ruffles, tiers and small floral prints, it’s boxy and shapeless. I think I’m giving up and might go to Plan B and try to find a skirt and blouse instead of a dress to fit the bill. Very discouraging!

I’ve been looking this past week for something to wear to an engagement party . Even though my taste is different than yours , I still am not finding much . I don’t care for prints , elastic necklines / sleeves , tiers , buttons etc but nor do I want straight and fitted . Irina’s comment kind of hit me though : dealing with placeholders is not great , and I need to make sure I don’t settle for something “ just because “ .

Janet, what about a Natori tank dress? They make a bunch of different prints including tie dye, shibori, etc., and you can often find them on sale.

Pretty dress, Janet! I can see it has lots of potential. Excited to see it on :)

I had many dresses to replace this year.....

Dresses ARE hard. I empathize.

That said, I'm having a good dress season, actually. I like ruffles, pleats, and tiers though - and the classics! So I've done well at Zara, Ralph Lauren Polo, and Hobbs. I am waiting for some Hobbs dresses to go on sale, and then I will pounce :)

I AM making midi and middaxi dresses priority purchases this year. Hemlines are rising, which is not my cuppa.

I am RETURNING the pink dress I got in Febuary. There is a quality issue. I cannot get the lining to lie flat, or the creases out of the skirt section :(

RunCarla, while in UK, you might want to drop by Marks and Spencer. Emma Hill recently tried dresses from Nobody’s Child that are available at M&S. I like a few but I never tried a UK size, so I don’t dare. Prices seems acceptable in Can $$.

Yeah, I don’t like anything with a tiered skirt or ruffles and that’s really limited my choices the last few years. This dress might be too simple for your taste but it has an interesting back detail and pockets and comes in a few colors, none of which are my person faves so I haven’t tried it.

https://www.universalstandard......ess-cerise
