The AT dress you posted would be a great travel dress. Can be dressed up or down by just changing out shoes,

I like the first 2 in your post for you. The CM silk should pack down to nothing. The AT could be dressed up or down. Either could be worn with leggings.

Laura and Shiny, thanks so much for the added ideas!

Boden is a great idea. I actually really like the tunic dress there and may order that. It seems like a great possibility.

And I will think about that Ann Taylor dress too.

Thank you!

I love all your choices and I look for the very same thing in dresses for work travel. I get the high hip bone undefined waist thing, but width-wise you are teeny tiny compared to me! Make sure your shifts fit in the shoulder and especially the arms. That will add in structure.

I do think you might want to give MMLafleur a try. I have a couple of dresses from them, and I like them very much. They are fitted but they stretch and move with you, and I think this is also good for their business in that they probably fit a range of sizes. They travel great because they are lightweight and don't wrinkle. The ones I have are more dressy than business casual, probably because they are longer on 5'0 tall me, so I really need to wear heels with them.

Not a shift but I bought this dress a month or so ago and I can't wait to wear it on my next business casual trip. I got it in petite and it's an awkward midi length so I intend to have it taken up to the knee, similar to the photo:

Have you tried Boden yet, Viva? I think a number of their dresses walk that line between business and casual. And they're strong on shifts.

I like that dress, Angie, but it feels a little corporate to me. Maybe it's the styling? My job is really not corporate at all. Clients are typically in jeans. I have a lot of latitude to show my personality. I don't really want to invest in something that feels boring or corporate because I don't think I will wear it.

I hear what you are saying abut the CM, though. What do you think of the VC floral? Or the Ann Taylor with the notched neck?

The CM dress is lovely and gorgeously pretty. I LOVE the pattern. FWIW, it's very flimsy and delicate. A little high maintenance for travel. For me that would be a high Summer frock, although the maintenance would not worry me. Not sure hose will work with it either. Could also be a little short for work. But always worth a try.

The print shirt dress is fantastic. I can really see you in it . With a black leather jacket? Perfection ! The other one didn't look good to me quality-wise. For lack of a better description, it is a blah looking knitted bag.

Still also considering the Vince Camuto and the Ann Taylor. May order one or both to try.

I'm also not a huge accessories person, so I like the Club Monaco (gorgeous!) and the Vince Camuto. I wonder if you could tailor the VC shift to nip in the waist loosely to create some shape without relying on your body to help? I'm a fellow no-waister so I totally understand how hard fitted-waist dresses are to fit.

Among your new ones, the clubmonaco print shirtdres is the one I can most see you in, but of course the silk is not very travel friendly and will bring back the question of layers and outfit planning until the weather is a lot warmer.

I like the idea of the split / notch neck dresses.

I think the one with the collar underneath could read a bit little-girlish, but would have to see it on because it might work with your sixties mod bent.

I have a similar issue with dresses in that I am very rectangle shaped without much defined waist and very little space between top of hipbone and bottom of ribcage. The dress brand that most often fits and flatters me is Rebecca Taylor, but I don't think the aesthetic is you.

Smittie, I am on the verge of ordering. It's not as clean color-wise although the print is sharp and graphic, not muted. But the shape is clean; I love a pointed collar. Funny, that's my fave too!!

Plus, what I don't like about the plainer ones is that they rely on accessories -- and I am not a big accessory wearer. I don't wear scarves except as a barrier to outdoor Cold, and I rarely wear statement jewelry. So with a dress like this, it's just my tiny jewelry and my big watch and that is it. Bam.

I think I can wear with sheer tights and booties?

Viva, I think you and I have a similar dress preference. I love Autumn Cashmere's swingy dresses (wearing one today) which are forgiving but don't swamp me. Dress up with hose, etc., dress down with skinnies or funky leggings. The Loft dress is a similar shape to those.

Eileen Fisher tunics in regular XS are long enough for me to wear as a dress as well.

Equipment has some great silk dresses in styles that aren't clingy or waist-oriented.

Eliza J. makes a lot of dresses with pattern that I would wear if not for the neckline and the particular colors.

The other thing that could work is a shirt dress if it's the right fabric and doesn't have a waist tie.

I'm a total fan of this concept. When I've traveled, I've worn heavier jersey dresses that don't wrinkle and can be dressed up or down. Interestingly, both of my favorites are only semi-fitted with a high waist. The high waist is very forgiving of uneven proportions. One was a random Kohl's store brand find from years ago; the other is from New York & Company, IIRC.

Of the ones you posted, I'm also most drawn to the Cynthia Steffe. It has a classy charm that's not too corporate. What a great idea! I hope you find some good things that make you happy to wear.

Actually I like them all ! - with the exception of the EF . With dresses, it's all in how you style them with leg wear and footwear - at least in my small brain it is I have the same wearing and style criteria as you - and I made some other comments in your WIW thread from yesterday.....

The more i look at the VC printed shift - I really, really like it. Wonder what the fabric is.....

I was going to suggest MMLF as well but seems like I've been beaten to the punch. I like the second one and think it could be de-corporatized with accessories. Scarves jewelry and shoes could make it really flexible but I am biased. Not even a customer yet but dreaming of some MM pieces for my fantasy (previous more dressy) life.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I like the floral one. Maybe because of the placement of the print.

I like the floral one and the purple one.i'm not sure about purple with hose though. I guess also the type of fabric would determine if something looked too corporate.

Thanks, Lisa. I've never really looked at MMLafleur before, and they have some really beautiful things.

The problem with a more fitted waist, however, is that it really will not work on my body. I don't have a waist, I have a shorter torso, and I have a high square hip line -- no nice slope from a small waist to a hip. So anything with a defined waist is usually too tight at the waist and bunches up because of my high hip bones, and makes me look pudgy and uncomfortable, which I am. Fitted dresses tend to be a disaster.

It's interesting, though, because of all the dresses I posted, I am drawn to the most structured of them: the Cynthia Steffe with the white collar, and the Anne Taylor with the notched collar. So perhaps you and I agree that I need to avoid too shapeless of a shift. Here are two from MMLafleur that I liked that could possibly work, although the first might be too shapeless and the second might be too corporate.
