Here is my 1930s/40s inspired outfit (better late than never, eh?)! This is my favorite fashion decade (tied with the 80s), though I don't have a lot of items reminiscent of the decade in my closet (unlike the 80s). The strong shoulders of the 40s really appeal to me, even with my IT tendencies, and I love the military/menswear vibe of the era, especially apparent in the war time as women were re-purposing men's clothing for themselves; thus the military-styled top (really a dress) with epaulets on the shoulders. To that I added my midi skirt (representing the longer hemlines and flared shape skirts), and semi-sheer/opaque black tights (representing the craze of sheer nylons). I kept this outfit simple as a nod to the post-Depression induced minimalism, leaving off a belt which I would normally wear with this, and sporting only my most important jewelry: earrings, wedding ring, and watch. Did a little 40s inspired twisty hair-do, too

This is such fun! I love what everyone has done with their outfits!
Here's my first ever WIW. I confess I'm not actually wearing many of the challenge outfits on the right days because my work schedule and the weather are being uncooperative.
I realise the sepia makes it look more 19th century than 1940s but my 6 year old set my camera to sepia and I couldn't figure out how to change it back until after I'd taken the dress off!
Looking at these I see I need to (a) tidy up and (b) practise taking photos...

Mo- I am so happy you decided to play along!
Jenava - Absolutely! I have a peplum dress. I didn't know if I should wear it for the 40s or keep it for the 80s.I finally decided that it is going to make an appearance tomorrow for the 60s, but for a different reason.

Astrid, you look incredible! This hairstyle and lippie definitely suits you. I can see your glasses a bit more, and the way you're looking down into the camera is very old Hollywood-confident!

Carole, your crisp Hepburn look is beautiful. You've got her coolness down (though now that I think of it, her characters were pretty hotheaded :))

Suz, where did the other photo go? Never mind , in the others you're sooo sharp! I lve the Fluevogs and the bow, and your hair is perfect with this! I'm seeing you in a 40s starfest like The Women.

Gosh, Antje, that combo is both stunning and whimsical - the red glasses and the cutout oxfords add a larger than life quality, gorgeously stylized, which I LOVE.

Gotta run for school pickup, will check the rest later!

I fell in love with the 30s and 40s as a child then a teenager, watching the movies they used to play on tv every weekend - Shirley Temple movies, Gone With The Wind, and of course, all the Andy Hardy movies.

I also listened over and over again to an album called "Ladies Sing the Blues", which juxtaposed heartwrenching torch songs against sassily belted lyrics like "I got a man over here, got a man over there, but the man over there - ooh, ooh, ooh, ee baba leeba". I was completely transported by the emotion, the humour and sensuality of these songs, as well as the warm sound. Plus, of course, the sense that these were women I could actually look and feel like, women not only of sensitivity and power but also women of colour, unlike most people I saw in the media and real life.

For my outfit I pulled out a dress I haven't worn since before my last pregnancy (it'd just get wrecked if I wore it at this stage!). I couldn't believe it - I felt just as wonderful, as me, and as at home in this dress as I ever did! This one's never leaving :).

Although it's not authentic, I always felt very 1930s in it. It has (slightly) puffy sleeves, which I see in a lot of 1930s looks - see this article on puffed sleeves in the 30s http://pomoboho.blogspot.com/2.....1930s.html

It is the most amazing cut for me and combines all the emotions of innocence and vulnerability, the fresh simplicity, as well as the sass & playful sexiness, I took from my 1930s idols.

I used to wear it with burgundy flat boots or more 30s-feeling black heeled mary janes. But for the first time, I put it on with my not-so-30s ecru Frye Veronicas. I love it!

It's funny; this challenge actually sparked a really interesting convo with DH last night at dinner; we were wondering if our current decade (the 2000's and 2010's) have a identifying "look" or not. Are we just too close to ID it? Or do we not really have one? Like Suz points out we can really make references to all sorts of decades but do we have our own identifying trend? I was thinking maybe skinny jeans was it?

I once heard that fashion tends to go in 40 year cycles. That can't be completely true of course. These days, especially, we make ironic reference to all sorts of different periods. But if you think of the current 70s elements...

Angie probably has clearer insight into all this, as may others who had made a study of it?

Thanks, I should mention that this hat, which is felted wool, is actually from the 1940's, I think. I still wear it as a winter hat. I like that the cloche covers my ears without wrecking my hair!

ETA, one thing I noticed when I was doing my research for each decade is that the elements of fashion in the 40's were actually echo'd a lot in the 80's. Anybody else notice that? I thought it was funny. My husband, who is studying interior design, says that it's because both decades were all about progressiveness and modernity (the straight, sharp lines of the Art Deco period are kind of echo'd in the geometric, high-contrast prints of the 80s)

OK, here's mine! Late, as usual (-:

When I was researching the era I came up with some touchpoints that I tried to use:
Shoulder-emphasis
Longer jackets, often belted
Calf-length skirts - straight, bias-cut or tulip hem
Waist-emphasis
Feminine blouses
Round-toe pumps or heeled oxfords with sturdy heels
Cloche hats
Tweeds and plaids for daywear

I wore my tweed coat over this. I didn't have a longer skirt that would have looked right but I think this was a pretty good modern interpretation.

I also did a darker lipstick and brown eyeshadow since that seemed to be a makeup look of the era.

Thank you for the compliments. My mother was a young woman in that era so maybe I am channelling her a bit...

I think DD and I might be getting the hang of the picture taking a bit better, too! So some is simply that! <grin>

I am so impressed by the care and thought that everyone has taken. It's such a joy to look at these outfits. It's a real fashion education, too, to recall what women wore in different eras. We are so lucky to have choices, to be able to mix elements, and not to be stuck in one particular mold.

Sooooo fun seeing all these great interpretations! Here is mine. It's hard to see in the photo, but I'm wearing a blouse with a very big bow tie. Since it's thin and short-sleeved, I layered a black jacket over it.

I love these threads so much! What fantastic outfits. I am revelling in the details. And also the inspiration photos.

I'm a little more forties than thirties. And I must admit I felt a bit like a flight attendant!

Ann Taylor jacket with military details (a bit difficult to see, but epaulettes on the shoulders, buckles on cuffs, pocket flaps). Also difficult to see...the jacket and blouse are inky blue; the skirt and belt are black.
My gored Comrags skirt
ON Elastic belt
Silk button down shirt.
Scarf, a gift ages ago.
Nylon stockings!
My late mother-in-law's brooch, dating from that era.

And the debut of my new Fleuvogs!

Excuse the silly face; my daughter was teasing me!

Thanks, Bella, for this challenge! I always learn things about what's already in the closet.

I thought this would be a lot harder to come up with something for this decade. Thank goodness for Katherine Hepburn!

Kim, I love the swishy skirt on that dress; no wonder you got compliments!

Diana, great print on the dress! It does have a 30's vibe; fabrics were printed in just a few colours and often had white space in them for the reasons Ornella cited; it was economical and had fewer errors.

Is it okay to have multiple outfit posts for these eras? I have a feeling there will be lots of posts from the 50s and 60s eras (I know I will) because that has been the trend lately especially watching shows like Mad Men and Pan Am. Let me know if that will be okay?

Astrid, you are looking very war-time glam, and it's so special that you got to wear your family's jewellry! YLF!

Ornella, you are way prettier than your role model; I hope no-one abdicated because of you today?

Natalie and Mary, that blouse is seriously fab, and I love that you styled it so differently.

Bella and Kate, great looks!
