Janet, I just ordered the Lola dress from Boden today. Hoping it works for both of us!

I also have this one and love it. https://bananarepublic.gap.com.....ge-content

The black is almost more of a dark greenish gray, IMO.

I immediately thought of the dress that Nadya linked to from US, which I recently got in periwinkle. So +1 for checking our Universal Standard wihch now comes in smaller sizes, BTW.

Thanks, Lisa! I have lots and lots of recommendations, which is awesome and appreciated!

That dress is great. I wish those styles looked better on me than they do!

I’m also grumpy because it’s 95 degrees and I just want to go bike riding and walking around with my camera but it’s too darn hot. And my laptop is still not fixed. I think I’ll spend there afternoon in a nice cool pub watching the women’s soccer game!

I hear you Janet. The search for pieces I like is wearing me down to the point where I have stopped looking and caring. I pulled out this dress today from my sample set - (from a line I was repping until just recently ) and feel FANTASTIC in it. I haven't checked the back view yet, and sure hope there are no nasty surprises waiting for me back there. Nice heavy bamboo knit with a lot of heft and a cool hand. It's not a shape you like though - I guess I'm just commiserating and assuring you that hope is around the corner - sometimes when you least expect it . It's in a mid navy, and I plan on wearing it with gold leather espadrilles and lots of gold jewellery today - then throwing on white sneakers and simpler jewellery for work tonight (bucking that all-black dress code once again).

AM, I kind of forget about Macy’s even though there is one in the closest mall. I haven’t seen anything in there I like in years. I think the buyer has very conservative tastes. Maybe online there would be something more to my liking.

I’m actually tired of looking at this point. I placed three orders: Boden, Anthro, and Amour Vert. If none of those contain a winner, I’ll just wear out what I have for the rest of the summer.

I tried on all my summer dresses last night, and there are several that I’m ok wearing, if not terribly excited by. There are a couple more I’m demoting to loungewear. Most of them I am totally unexcited by these days, for one reason or another — fit is off, or I’m tired of the print, or I feel ever so slightly frumpy in them. They are serviceable but if I were trying them on in a store, I would not buy them now.

I’m really seeing very little on these online sites that’s making me sit up and say, “ooh yeah, I want to wear that!” Everything seems to be florals and prints that are not quite “me,” juniors looking styles, too flirty, too bodycon, too officey, or too boring. I already have enough boring. ;-D

Sorry I’m bitching so much about this! Just when designers start making some longer lengths, all the other variables are against me!

Janet - I don't usually shop online at Macys but just recently "accidentally" got into their online dress selection (I'm sure it was marketed to me) and was surprised by how many I was finding that looked like they would work. I'm waiting for them to arrive so we'll see!

I’ll take a look at PC, thanks!

I’m really picky about prints right now for some reason — many are just not speaking to me. Sometimes it’s the colors, but also some are just not quite me somehow. But solids are difficult to wear (many of these jersey fabrics show a lot of lumps and bumps, particularly not good for me now). I suppose I am practicing some PPP!

Thanks for the suggestions, Angie! I may see if that Ann taylor blue dress is in the mall next time I’m over in that area. I tried a similar Boden dress and it wasn’t quite right on me — that segmented bodice is all wrong for my proportions.

I did order the Amour Vert dress to try, and a t-shirt dress from Anthro. They’re more solid color blue and black, again, but if they look really good, I’ll go with it. It just seems that the Venn diagram of current interesting casual dresses and those that actually look good on my body has a very tiny intersecting portion. The only dress I have gotten this year is this first one, and it’s good, but I would really like more variety.

The following are pretty much my entire summer casual (or semi-casual) dress collection. Some are not the easiest to wear and really are more occasion-specific. Some are getting a bit worn looking. Some are a little clingy or have slight fit issues right now. Most are several years old. I need to do a try-on and determine why exactly I’m not wearing some of them anymore.

I figure I’ll try ordering a couple of options and if nothing works out, it’ll be mostly skirts and shorts for the rest of the summer.

Janet, I'm with you on last year being a must better dress season for me personally. Too many V-necks, wraps, and skimpy-up-top styles this year. Or the fabric is schmutters, and I don't like the patterns. That said I found 4 dresses eventually and it was hard work!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

An aside: Please forgive me if I don’t respond to each individual response. My laptop is at the Apple store for a keyboard issue, and they called me yesterday to say they fixed that, but somehow in the process broke the logic board (!!!). So I’m without laptop for a few more days while they fix their own damn mistake (can you tell I’m mad?). The employee which called me explained “there won’t be any charge to you” and I exclaimed “I would expect not, since there was nothing wrong with the logic board when I brought it in to you!” So long story short, ugh, no laptop for now. And I have projects I need to work on!

Peri, I have no experience with AV, but I like the styles you linked to! I wish I could wear that short one, I love how easy and cute those short shifts look on other women — on me, they’re just wrong. I’m not an IT — more hourglass leaning toward pear. But I like those other two very much — I just wish the color selections were more to my liking. Ah well, I keep defaulting to black and blue.

Have you ever tried Amour Vert? I'm a huge fan. I know this one is shorter but it's one I'm considering. I have their T shirt in this style/fabric and it's a winner. Angie would say the looseness works because the sleeves are structured. (Sorry, finds not enabled).

https://amourvert.com/products.....6168842311

I can see this one on you, very Janet looking to me:

https://amourvert.com/products.....6261482567

Maybe this?

https://amourvert.com/products.....8377078855

I'll be curious to hear how the Boden ones work for you. As a fellow "blessed" beauty I've not found their cuts to work for me. I don't remember if you are also IT, but at least several years ago, Boden was not shoulder and bust friendly.

Have you looked at consignment stores or thrift stores. All my favorite dresses are second hand except for a few EF dresses. I need to replace my dearly loved Calvin Klein dresses as they feel too tight, especially with a back zipper that is difficult to reach anymore. You might try that brand. Even Nordstrom Rack has a selection with a good length. I like a plain, usually neutral, color that can be dressed up or down. I often use scarves, jewelry or jackets to give them different looks. Today for dress month I wore a basic black sheath that I had bought at Good Will for $3 (Talbots brand) with navy accessories. I will repeat this outfit or my navy EF dress with black accessories. I have carefully collected some things that can pull black and navy together. I could easily add blush or coral to the black and navy. Hold out for dresses that you will really love.

I get you. I have two sack dresses that I will wear in the extreme heat, but my figure flattering priorities, such that they are, are the opposite of yours (not that I wouldn't highlight my waist if I had one!). One is from Everlane actually but their newer styles might work for you. But no prints.

You have a tough combo of weather, activities and preferences for flattery. The current fashion trend just isn’t in your favor.

I’m ready to wear a potato sack as long as it’s cool

Molly Mac's suggestion for Universal Standard made me think of a dress I'm jonesing for - it comes in black and a light periwinkle - maybe not your favorite colors, but the design has an architectural integrity that seems right for you.

https://www.universalstandard......ress-black

Universal Standard carries sizes 00-40 now, whereas previously you might have been sized out.

I want what you do, but with elbow to 3/4 sleeves in lightweight fabric -breathable woven cotton, good rayon, in plus size. I also have been wearing skirts, but it is not the same.

Universal Standard and Everlane have some really lovely dresses that are solids but all have some interesting detail that makes them unique. I have also had a lot of success with Gap for t shirt style dresses this year.

These were my most worn summer dresses last season - the first find of mine is teal not black and I could see something like this on you. The long black one is the least flattering but I quite like it. They are all NZ designers except the blue one which is a random label I found second hand.

Have you considered a skirt and matching top - two piece dress?

The BR column dress is a nice basic. I’m on my phone and can’t add funds but this one appeals to me. I have the regular crew neck from last year in burgundy and I like it.

LaP, yes, you’re right about the current aesthetic! But sadly for me, we’ve already been in the 90s for a week, we have three more months of hot weather, and I don’t run cold anymore.

Kkards, I hadn’t looked at Athleta, but last time I scanned their offerings I noticed bodycon and/or short. I don’t wear those round scoopneck styles as well as I did when I was thinner — they seem to add even more roundness to my already abundant roundness, sigh. I need some angles, diagonal or vertical lines, or a slight touch of tailoring these days. And I’m trying to stay away from more solid black or grey unless it’s just an amazing dress.

Laura, I’m not sure about basic t-shirt dresses for me — they tend to be too straight and short. If they have a little shape and a little length they can work, but the devil is in the details.

Lisa, I know you get me! :-)

Rachy and Bennett, I haven’t looked at Macy’s or Zappos in any depth. They both kind of overwhelm me. Maybe a tight filtering would help.

Thanks all!

Maybe I should look at Shopbop too. Sometimes it seems the stuff that looks more interesting is like $800, and that’s just not happening.
