Ridiculous....I know the major chain grocery store where I worked for 19 yrs only recently allowed men to have *any* facial hair! (Also their hair needed to be above 'collar' length.) Another I worked at even dictated what color socks one could wear..sigh

I totally agree with IK I like for health care workers to look neat, tidy and clean but tattoos or hair colour do ot phase me. The rule is stupid.

Ironically enough, you could have a perfectly "tame" hairstyle with unnatural hair color and a "wild" hair style with natural hair color. Mohawk anyone?

This is the dumbest, most unfair thing I've ever heard of. Besides, many women have "unnatural" hair color. If they have to have a stupid rule like this, they need to clarify what they mean. Also, I don't know why having a different hair color is somehow worse than having tattoos. If you asked me which I'd rather my DDs do (color hair or get tattoos), I'd pick an "unnatural" hair color any day--even purple!

Oh, boo. What does "unnatural hair color" even mean? I mean, my hair color is technically unnatural for me, but it is natural for many other people.

FWIW, I think you would look awesome with pink streaks.

I get that a hospital wants to present a professional, crisp, fairly conservative appearance. To many (again more conservative) people, colored hair is not an indicator of competence. It says youth and rebellion.

However, I think the color thing is avoiding the real issue - it's overall neatness and cleanliness. Who cares if your doctor has purple hair, so long as they are competent and professional with clean hands? If a nurse has pink hair, but it is neatly bound and cared for, then bless her.

However, its probably harder legally to determine what is considered elegant and tidy than it is to simply ban not-found-in-nature hair colors in staff.

oh, please. speaking as a patient (been in hospitals a fair amount), i wish they'd focus more on things like gel nails and doctor's ties - both of which have been proven to be full of germs and great at transmitting them to other people. What the h311 do i care about hair color, tats, piercings, etc.? i want capable, competent, caring people!

i remember getting prepped for surgery as a young woman (around 20). The tat-covered, long-haired orderly was trying to position the EKG senors without 'offending my modesty' (the sensors are circular adhesive patches connected to wires). You need to place these on certain spots on the chest, so it was kind of ridiculous. Then, the grandmotherly head nurse came in, looked at him like 'what are you doing?'. She whisked my gown off down to my hips, plip plap plop placed the sensors, then covered me back up. "There!' she said, and on to the next thing.

Biker orderly and i were both frozen in shock. Looks mean nothing! Hang in there Anna, we love you no matter how you look, steph

I work closely with healthcare professionals in Seattle and am surprised to hear about the hair-color ban. I am frequently in the hospital near my office (because of work - not as a patient), and I swear I've seen nurses and doctors with "unnatural" hair colors. I love seeing a pink- or purple-haired health care professional; makes me feel more at home in the hospital, actually. Even though I don't have colorful hair, my hairstyle is outside of the norm, and seeing staff who look a bit counterculture makes me feel as if the hospital is truly comfortable with and welcoming of diversity.

I know the tattoo thing was hotly debated at that hospital some time ago, until the case was made that banning tattoos meant discriminating against anyone who got a tattoo years before becoming a health professional or before applying to work at that hospital. I think the hospital requires that people with tattoos get thoroughly tested for blood-borne pathogens, which I think is reasonable, as all clinical staff have to comply with the hospital's schedule of periodic testing and vaccinations anyway.

I was JUST thinking the other day that you need pink streaks in your hair, Anna.

Urgggh. That just doesn't make sense - especially in the city of Seattle where people are so very tattooed, grungy and have hair all colours of the rainbow. That makes me angry

I have a feeling the vagueness of this could get them in trouble. I mean, define 'unnatural hair color'. The hair color I'm currently sporting may be someone's natural hair color. It certainly isn't my natural color. My current natural color is something my hairdresser and I define as 'dead rodent.' It is brilliantly covered with a great dark blonde. I'm just sayin' . . .

I'm surprised they don't have him cover his tattoos, especially in healthcare. At my last employer we had the no "unnatural" hair color and no visible tattoo rule but the hair color was a bit harder to judge (I suppose purple wouldn't have flown though.)
Dress codes do get in the way of personal expression for sure.

So I work at major public hospital and wear scrubs. I've accepted the fact that I can't really show my personality at work. Recently I've toyed with the idea of putting either pale pink or lavender bits in my hair. Something like this

http://kingdomofstyle.typepad......kos-1.html

Well today they put the dress code on the front page of the intranet. No unnatural hair color. But my coworker has visible tattoos on his arms. Argh! I'm looking at clip-in extensions.
