That's a lovely blouse and your idea to go with patterned tops and (possibly) more colourful trousers for date / dressy nights seems excellent to me. I can't wait to see where you go next with this!

Angie: thank you! I think a pair of blue bootcuts is going to be my next jeans purchase, because I've sorely missed that shape in particular. Putting blazers into my dressy capsule makes sense -- I used to wear blazers a lot and have a nice selection, so I should review them with an eye to that. I might end up passing them on, but I bet at least a few of them can find a new life with me!

suntiger, mostly just because I like gray and felt it was more interesting/non-basic than blue. I probably also like the lowered contrast, though, now that you mention it -- I've never liked very deep blue or black denim very much. So that's a good mental note for me to carry with me when I look at wardrobe changes!

Everyone else, thank you also! I feel like it was a really interesting experiment, and made me a lot more thoughtful about my wardrobe in ways I didn't expect.

Today I'm wearing an ink blue & white gingham button-up, without a stripy tee underneath. Feels a little weird!

I like your method. I feel a lot of clarity, clear direction. And with pattern and stripes, there’s nothing uninteresting or overly basic style-wise.

... I found a yellow top with black stripes at Target. It’s probably my favourite just because it’s not blue or grey, lol.

:) Sounds good! Do you like the grey jeans most because they keep the contrast lower in your outfits? If so, a medium wash jean would be closest to that, and more available in different silouettes. Also olive would be similar, though mostly skinnies or cargos available atm.

Jaquez, you are eloquent, organized, disciplined, and I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis. How disciplined you were to stick to your plan and uniform. I'm impressed.

Can you add blue and black jeans in a bootcut or wide crop silhouette?

Like the sound of the pattern mix.

As for the dressy capsule, how colourful pants and a blazer?

Suz, I'm not sure! I have a "lady tux" from Eloquii x Jason Wu, which I love, and another one from Nine West that I do NOT love. I have a few pairs of black dress trousers including one with a gold tuxedo stripe down the side and one with white piping down the side, and a pair of purple dress trousers (which I end up wearing a lot).

I have a lovely lilac & turquoise floral print tie-neck top (see below -- in person it's more purple than the picture), a red polka dot top, a black & white striped tunic, and a couple nice sweaters.

Shoes I have a couple very nice pairs, but my favorites are black smoking slippers with silver studs all over them -- very comfy and go with everything I own!

I have to think pretty seriously about where to go with that. The three tops I listed all fall into the patterned area, don't they? So maybe focus on fun, beautiful patterned tops for dressy, with...perhaps colorful trousers? I don't wear skirts anymore but when I did I had a selection of great colorful pencil skirts that I wore for date nights all the time -- so fun with retro heels. Hm! This thought makes me happy.

I think this sounds like a unique and amazing closet and you've executed your plan brilliantly and now are ready to evolve a bit! What a great way to simplify while still retaining a style signature!

What do you envision for dressy/ date night type outfits? Could you create a kind of uniform for that, too -- e.g. "tuxedo" pants with a silk striped shirt?

Hello all! Last summer everyone helped with my dress code experiment, and I've now been doing that for over a year. I was going to write this post when I get back home from vacation...but let's be real, non-vacation life is so busy that it wouldn't happen. So I'm sorry I'm not able to share pictures.

I've thought a lot about what I learned, what worked and didn't work for me over time, and have made some revisions based on my needs & likes for the future.

My daily uniform was a striped top and gray jeans.

The good:

I like all my clothes a lot more! I love opening my drawers and seeing rows of stripy tops (Marie Kondo-style!)

I've experimented with pattern-mixing more, and with stripe-on-stripe. I've liked a lot of patterns combined with stripes.

I spend less time shopping and less time agonizing over my choices when I do shop.

I have a better sense of what is in my wardrobe and what holes I need to fill.

I've tried some jeans I never had before, including high-waisted, jeggings, distressed jeans, patterned jeans, and skinnies.

The bad:

The silhouettes for gray jeans are more limited than for blue or black jeans. Most of the options are skinnies, and there's only so many pairs of those that I need.

I've always had delicate skin, and in my 40s it's thinning even more. I've also always worn men's jeans to vary my silhouettes a bit -- but the fabric on men's jeans is much too coarse for me now. This limits my looks even more.

Stripe colors tend to be limited, as well. Boden is the best place for non-navy/black/gray striped tops, and Stitch Fix has done right by me in the button-up shirt department, but even so there's a LOT of navy, black, and gray in my wardrobe.

Limited options for dressy wardrobe! I ended up ignoring dress code for date night/evening wear entirely, and that part of my wardrobe feels scattershot and poorly planned.

The future:

Because I tried pattern-mixing, I ended up with some patterned shirts to wear over stripes, and I love them. I've started wearing some on their own, and I think I'm going to add a bunch of patterned shirts to the dress code. I have a couple from Gender Free World that do a good job of not gaping over my breasts, although the fabric isn't quite the texture I like. I'm going to see what else I can find in the "shirts designed for people with overactive bosoms" category!

I'm going to add back in blue jeans. I'm going to make sure I keep a skinny jean in rotation, though, as well as some distressed jeans, and if I find a floral pattern I like, that too!

I'm going to review my dressy-clothes wardrobe and make it less hole-filled and better-edited. (I also need to sell my good-condition heels since I can't wear heels anymore!)

Any other suggestions? Would love to hear what people think!
