Your collection is great, and I love the description of your dream dressy coat.
My collection, like Angie's, is quite extensive. I have just replaced my black puffer and there is nothing I really need, other than navy spring trench. However, I am really into wool midi coats these days, and there is a bunch of color's I'd like: off-white, light blue, burgundy and mid-bright purple. Also, something in an interesting and colorful pattern.

If I could find a long, woollen, belted shawl collar coat with a practical closure & pockets, I don't think I'd ever need anything else It's been a HEWI for a while - the lapels on all outerwear is so pointy these days, argh!

ETA: Oh, except for maybe a 'dressy' puffer coat (one that's shaped & in a flattering colour for me). I've never liked the 'belted quilt' look, but recently I've been seeing some rather stylish iterations on YLF that are slowly changing my mind - if only I had the climate (again) for such a topper!

Ooh thanks everyone! It's been a bit busy here so I haven't been able to reply to all.

Lovely fantasy coat collections (and real ones too). Definitely a fun thing to shop for although expensive.

I am going to get a new wool coat, but likely not a trench nor a dressy coat, I don't have the lifestyle nor weather for one really. I think trenches suit a walking or public transport to work lifestyle - I either drive or bike or work from home. And if I go walking it is mostly for exercise or for social engagements. I love trenches but they can be too hot for summer and not warm enough for winter. A smart wool coat would take me to the opera or the ballet on the once a year I do these things. Truthfully - I would be best with more puffers.

Will be back with more later.

Coats and jackets are apparently my drug of choice. For me, I can wear my hanging-around-the-house long sleeve tee and hiking pants and make a decent errand outfit with an interesting coat or jacket. Like Jessiekams, I bought a beautiful long wool coat just before the pandemic. I haven’t tried it on recently. I gained pandemic weight and a lot of my clothes don’t fit. I’m trying to reverse this by cutting out some bad habits. Fingers crossed.

My dream coat would be a wool coat in Black Watch tartan, similar to the one Meghan Markle Is wearing.

Oooh I love the idea of a camel coat for you, Sal!! What about a long teddy coat similar to your faux fur bomber? (Every time I see that bomber coat, I instantly think of you!)

I love the idea of a long, luxurious, fancy topper that could be worn to the ballet or theater, but my lifestyle doesn’t really warrant having one.

This is my outerwear. Not pictured is a random purchase (Outdoor Research winter Ferrosi) that is insulated/quilted but more like a Barbour jacket than a true puffer. It’s become a major workhorse - casual puffy goodness, but not sporty. Several of these are in my holding zone - I don’t reach for them, but I will re-evaluate at the end of the season.

Like suntiger, what I want isn't more coats but more storage for them! My dream house has a big mudroom with lots of storage for outerwear, unlike my current house which just has random hooks everywhere. :D

I'm very happy with my current coat collection, although it has a little more redundancy right now than necessary. I'm still looking for a thick, cuddly oversized sherpa/teddy jacket of some sort, and I wouldn't mind a very puffy hooded down vest either. I also go back and forth over whether or not I want a classic wool peacoat; I think I just haven't found the right one yet.

Aw, come on Cat2, show us the goods!

Suz, no Snow Princess? (¤﹏¤)

RL, i agree with everyone else—that floral puffer is fun.

CarolS, you’ve got some funky colorful fantasy outerwear too—hope some of it happens (though my blue parka that I can throw on over anything shows me the advantage of the black parka on your list).

Suntiger, I never knew how great a coat closet was when I had one! Besides the winter coats listed above, I have half a dozen transitional coats, so I get to swap them out a couple times a year. Can’t wait to move out of this place!

FYI, everybody, there are a bunch of Save the Ducks on sale at Yoox right now.

ETA I just realized everyone is posting what they own instead of dream coats like I did above. Here are most of mine

Ok, I am stuck on that floral puffer for Rachy. Plus, Carla, those coats you linked to look so luxe and beautiful! I have a Hilary Radley coat with a high proportion of alpaca and it is so, so luxe feeling, even though I got it on sale at the Bay for just over $100 right when I joined YLF! (Pictured below).

Sally, I love the idea of your additions. You can keep your eye out for them and maybe add slowly? Outerwear does have longevity.

My current collection is below. In a dream world, I'ld like one of the coats Carla linked to, or something like it. But in my real life, I'd like a midi-length lightweight puffer coat, as well as a new lightweight water resistant shorter but not jacket-length puffer for my walks to replace my old Thermoball.

A long velvet coat would be a nice addition for dressy occasions, and a packable raincoat and black puffer- but definitely not essential. Maybe when we build the new house and I have a coat closet!

I finally bought a beautiful dress coat ….right before the pandemic. And then felt like an idiot once there were no events to attend. But I had a chance to wear it to a small event last week, and I have to say it made getting dressed soooo easy. Usually that final layer is the sticking point for me, with winter formals.

I would be sure you have some sort of event coat. You take it off right away and check it, so hardly anyone sees your coat anyway. I use a knee length black trench with some shine to the fabric, is lined and has an additional zip out liner. It is also my funeral coat, as it has a removable hood for wet weather. It is single breasted and belted. Before this I used a black light weight wool trench. It looked dressy, but was a workhorse, going on lots of trips. I reluctantly gave it to my sister when I lost too much weight to wear it but I miss it.
You might also need a light weight puffer jacket. Mine goes everywhere and can be worn under another coat
or jacket.

For a wool coat, I suggest a JCrew stadium coat. Mine is blush colored and much worn, especially in late winter when I am sick of neutrals and puffers.

Ooh, I like the sound of your evening coat, Sal -- and that floral puffer Rachy -- wow!

My fantasy outerwear capsule would include:

A yellow raincoat -- similar to Angie's Levi's jacket

A motorcycle jacket -- I've always thought black, but maybe now a battered gunmetal grey might suit me well

A straight cut, single breasted camelhair coat -- not too fitted

A classic denim jacket

maybe an aviator style jacket (Angie posted a cute one from M&S the other day that got me thinking...

A cream quilted coat or puffer (I actually want to conjure up one I had several years ago..)

A very simple, warm, and lightweight black parka. Not fitted through the body. Longer in back than in front. It has a hood. Its style comes from its shape, but it is HIGHLY practical, too.

I wouldn't say no to a bright yellow, teal or fresh olive green puffer

A grownup version of a flowered winter jacket I had a kid. I wish I had a picture to share -- I think the flowers were shades of orange and pink....

PLUS -- I would also resurrect, if I could, an iridescent burgundy jacket I had in the late eighties, with a burnt orange lining. I loved that jacket SOOOOO MUCH.

Thanks Sal -- this was fun and, um, alarming. I've gotta go to bed now! :-)

Hah! I don’t have many fashion regrets, but one that still rankles is a full skirted satin trench coat, black with big red roses on it that was deep discounted at a Toronto Winners 7 or 8 years ago. It was so over the top theatrical, I thought I’d never have the opportunity to wear it, so left it behind. But, it was a perfect wildcard and would have been wearable where we now live (vs the remote northern town we lived in at the time I saw it) and just the thing for theatre or the opera!

I also have a fantasy of owning a full length alpaca coat from Sentaler - a Canadian design house. I would go classic and long enough to cover a knee length dress. https://sentaler.ca/?gclid=EAI.....gLyV_D_BwE

My black coats (winter pea coat, and short trench) are showing their age and will need replacement at some time. I’m happy with the merlot puffer, and new safari jacket, and adore my lilac coat.

I love your idea of a velvet coat for the opera! I also love Brooklyn’s velvet coat. If & when I ever get going to second hand stores, it sounds like a long velvet coat is something to keep my eyes out for.

Other things that cross my mind occasionally but are not needs:

A cocoon coat that goes to tops of thighs in a false plaid menswear pattern, mostly b/w, but with a stripe or two of green &/or pink (but not in a preppy way)

A white teddy bear jacket, maybe long enough to cover my butt, or maybe cropped—but white, unlike this find.

A girly looking winter coat in pink or purple with ruffles.

I wouldn’t turn down a fun, bright-colored plaid coat or a velvet puffer if they came my way.

Winter coats I own (in order of warmth)
Big blue parka with black faux fur around hood
Dark brown aviator jacket from LLBean with thinsulate lining
Knee-length wool coat
ETA new blue “varsity” jacket. I think this is where it fits in, warmth-wise, but am not sure yet.
Black leather motorcycle jacket, oversized
Red puffer, short (but not cropped) tied with black leather jacket for warmth

I don't have any coat purchasing desires because I currently have more than enough coats. I bought this Burberry trench (second hand) and find it very useful for our winters, good at dealing with our winter rain and winds.

My most worn coat (probably garment) is my velvet house coat. It gets worn twice a day, I love it!

A trench for winter… how I envy you! :)
Your wish list is great and not extensive :)
I have only one item on my winter list - a long puffer in navy. A new unlined wool coat is on my fall list. 2 pieces, basically and not because I’m a minimalist. I already bought 4!! pieces of winter outwear this year.
I can hardly justify buying more.

After reading Carol's thread I got to thinking about what would be my dream outerwear collection...

For the purposes of this I am not talking about blazers or leather jackets but the top layer that are usually taken off inside.

My current collection is below (I do have one more puffer and one more raincoat - both only worn for exercising). I also have a school rain/puffer that I wear to support my son's rugby.

What would I add to make the perfect collection for me?
- knee length single breasted lightweight wool coat in camel or toffee or silvery heathered grey.
- my perfect trench in a warm camel (that's not likely as I don't have the right climate/lifestyle)
- a gorgeous velvet or heavy silk dressy coat for wearing to the ballet or theatre or opera in navy (also not likely)

In reality I will at some stage find the new single breasted coat but I am not looking for the trench or dressy coat.

How about you?
