Funny you say that Shiny, that's actually what I want - room to spread out what I do wear. That & a "holding area" if you will for things I'm deciding on. I say that as I am a frequent returner & I buy a lot of thrift or consignment items - if I don't like or don't wear then I just consign them back. In essence, I end up with a "holding area" in my closet that is stuff I haven't committed to yet. I wear simple basics & the bulk of my wardrobe is in accessories so that really does need to take up a large portion of my closet. Good things to keep in mind!

Ohhh yes - a washer/dryer on 1st floor would be ideal! Hubby doesn't know if we'll have that much room. Sniff sniff!! He's guessing at 10x10 for the closet itself (I think he's trying to keep me realistic ;). No clue yet, we will likely get some designs as he hasn't drawn up anything yet. Ironing board in closet - check (no brainer & I hadn't got there yet) - thank you! Skylights for natural lighting - EXCELLENT idea! Yes, spot for laundry in closet instead of sitting in bedroom. Good idea! Lot's of great idea's - THANK YOU!!

My parents have a dreamy closet, although ironically, my mom probably only wears 10% of her clothes! I tease her about that all the time. This is something to consider: sometimes more space is not good, as it encourages you to fill up the space with stuff you don't really wear. I would rather have room to spread out my smaller wardrobe so I could see it all more easily.

But you may be inspired by their layout. Their layout is this: laundry opening off hallway, with another door opening into master bath, with another door off master bath leading into closet, which then leads into bedroom. The laundry off the bath was my mom's greatest wish, as you can just do away with hampers and dump clothes directly into the laundry room after your shower. And it's a short walk to carry clothes to the closet. Plus, the heat from the dryer feeds into the bathroom, keeping it toasty.

For the closet, my ultimate wish-list would be:

- Lots of lighting - natural lighting best. Think skylights?
- Full length mirror somewhere (so you can get dressed IN the closet)
- A comfy bench you can sit on to put your shoes on
- Lingerie and jewelry drawers you pull out - not too deep. So things don't become a jumbled mess.
- Felt lining in jewelry drawers so nothing tarnishes
- maybe hooks for long necklaces so they don't tangle, and you can see them
- Scarves are tricky. I'm thinking hooks for these, as hangers might be a pain when you are in a rush?
- quality hangers are absolute essential!!!! No wire ones, eek.
- compartments for folded sweaters and tops
- A place for gloves and hats
- Handbag storage!! So they don't topple, and they keep their shape
- room for an ironing board, so you can iron in the closet
- a place to hang stuff you want to steam - and yes, an electrical outlet for this
- place for hampers so you can sort laundry
- I think I might prefer wire rods instead of wood, so it makes it easier to slide hangers on and off, and if there are separators, it disciplines you to have less, with each garment item having it's own room to air out (instead of getting squashed against too many other items)
- A section for occasional wear (like formal gowns) that can be covered to keep the dust off - either with cloth or even a door.
- I would not want to have to fold my pants to hang them. I never do it right and always end up with creases at the knee. I much prefer to hang my pants (from cuff). So ample vertical storage for pants and dresses.
- Those dust covers that go over your jackets
- Room for coats too... so they don't get crammed in the coat closet and/or get borrowed by my teens!

I may have thought about this too much.

Ok, I need some imaginations & suggestions please! We have a very teeny tiny walk-in closet. By walk-in I mean one person (maybe 2 if you squeeze) could stand still & close the door. Hubby & I are finally talking again about re-doing some things at home. One of those being an addition to bump out our current bedroom and....add a large walk-in closet!! We'd also take the existing space & re-do our bathroom.

Here's the layout. We have a 1 1/2 story house. On the main level is the master bed & bath. However, that's the only bath & it also serves as the guest bath. That sucks! It has a seated shower in it (no tub). Looking to put in a tub & shower. I'd also like to do a small guest bath (1/2 bath - just toilet & sink). Then, a master bath.

However, my questions are around where would you search for inspiration ideas for your dream closet?? And/Or, what would the requirements be if you could design ANYTHING? I'm thinking 1 large wall designated specifically to accessories alone. A closet the size of a small bedroom maybe?

Right now I have a very large accordian style hook thing that has maybe 100 hooks on it that is hung on a wall vertically (maybe 8 ft. tall?). I'd like to be able to do this horizontally instead as I drape scarves & hang purses on it right now. I also have this funky architectural bird looking thing from Pier1 that was made for CD's (picked it up thrifting one day) & it hangs on another wall with belts rolled up in it. That is SO fun & looks like a cool art piece itself actually. These are outside of my current closet (current is very small remember). I'd like to have these on 1 wall inside the new closet with a large mirror. That & other accessories would be on that wall. Ohhh, and I think I want to take some of those pant hanger things that you can slide out & back and install those for scarves as I have them all ironed & hanging on pant hangers right now. They'd be on the accessory wall.

I'm totally dreaming here but ohhhh one wall of just shoes - how fun would that be?

I want to dream it up big & then figure out what we really need/want & align things from there.

So, if you could have ANYTHING in a dream closet. What would it be??

Also, any must haves if you were doing a master bath to go along with it? One thing being - access from the master bath to the closet? How do you feel about that? We don't have it now. But, I remember being in other house's before & thinking it was weird when someone left their closet open & staring at someone's clothes from a bathroom. I know, I'm digressing but it's goofy things like that I'm looking for. What would you do/not do???

Or, if it's easier what do you love/hate about your current closet or other closets that you've seen & drooled over? I want total functionality & some fun.

I'm a big thrift store shopper & hubby can do most anything so we'll likely be doing most of it ourselves & shopping for some things at Habitat for Humanity or someplace like that. Ohhh, a chandalier in the closet - how fun would that be? (I'd thrift it of course!)

Thoughts????
