Interesting and a good realisation. I agree that too oversized or too tight or short are all reasons that pieces linger on the hanger.

I agree with Jaime - I like to get dressed and then not worry so fussy pieces are a no go for me. I only buy colours that I like so that’s not too much of an issue now, but the wrong fit can sometimes be.

Suz your life-style is clearly more varied than mine. Your #3 is something I take into account pre-season when I check what I already have in my closet that will be trending and then put those items into rotation when the time comes. Because my closet is so vast and spans so many years I very often can pull out items that look fresh again instead of shopping new.

Jaime yes as Mrs RATE Tomgirl 'fussiness' is an absolute no-no. Maybe that is why if the cut of the top or the dress is just right I won't be tugging at it and feel self-conscious.

JenniNz Good to hear your new pants are working out. I have tried in the past to emulate an item and it did not work out. A white pair of cargo pants comes to mind that I literally lived in, so I bought a brown pair from the same retailer with only slight differences yet they did not work for me as well as the white, and no idea why really as it was not about the colour. They hung differently, probably a different fabric composition.

I do not know what it is that makes me really like something. At least I can hone my preferences better these days, since joining YLF 7 years ago. I can sometimes choose well because I already know the type of thing that works- like my new false plain pants, only owned for a few months and already worn 18 times and might be able to take the place of older pants that are getting tired. Because they were the same shape and similar style to my favourite pants.
For tops, drape is important, also softness, and colour or pattern. I think overall I am choosing well but there are a lot of variables

Interesting to hear from you guys on this subject. I will be back later but just to say quickly, Angie I do have items in my closet that are not an ideal fit. I keep them because sometimes when the tummy is not so bloated or my weight fluctuates down, instead of up, I can actually wear them happily. If the colour is totally off it is a no-no for sure. However if it is okay, but not my favourite, fit wins out.

Interesting observation. I haven't really thought about it in this way, but I think the most important quality in my clothes is non-fussiness - once I am dressed I prefer not to have to think about and fuss with my clothes. But I will play around with silhouette and to some extent color. I need to think about this more - I am not actually sure.

Although I’m all about a fit of a garment, I agree with Angie - right color comes first. For example, I have Anthropology pants that fit me well but I bought them in bright orange (a passing fancy) and I’ve hoped to wear it the but never do.
As for fit and drape, it is a moving target for me. This season I’m into cropped boxy button down shirts that I like to pair with baggy pants. They also work with cropped wide legs.

I know that I will not wear something if a fit is off, I alter some of my clothes to make it work.

Very interesting to get this precise read of your preferences, Star!

As you know, I sometimes track wears and sometimes don't (have at times tracked and other times don't bother) and my wear preferences are similarly all over the map! And not really replicable in any meaningful way, beyond colour preferences, that is, since I do stick to a core palette.

In short: The things I favour tend to be the things with which I can make that season's favoured outfits!

Which sounds circular, and sort of is...because what makes this or any season's favoured outfits?

A combination of factors:

1. What is the weather like in this particular season? (Beyond just summer or winter, but this summer or winter, i.e. is it particularly hot, wet, snowy, etc.)

2. What am I doing in this season? (Travel to urban centres...or outdoorsy stuff, or both? Working out of the home or at home?)

3. What goes with my new (or old and rediscovered) favourite items best to create a sense of currency? I always want that bit of trendiness to go with my overall classic style, and anything I can pair with the one or two new trendier items I buy per year makes me happiest and gets most wear that season.

So it's a bit more complicated and difficult to predict than your self-discovery, but it is nevertheless consistent over time and gives me information for shopping, i.e. I need one or two new and slightly trendy items per season that will work well with many of my older items and create a new or adapted silhouette.

I’m agreeing too as to fit and drape. My enduring top style is a T shape knit bit with some drape, like cotton- modal. Crew neck but not too high & narrow, but not scooped ! Then the cut is key because not too tight in busy even though that means I might size up, then need it not to have too- big armholes, or cut too straight or will ride up. AND I’m addicted now to more softness ( to the skin, not necessarily a soft “ look”) Whew!
Also tailored collared shirts, but lots of requirements there too. At least all the boxes to tick should help discipline my purchases!

Angie, I agree about color, except— I had such trouble finding my true favorite colors, that I had tended to buy right color/ wrong fit ( not alterable type). And eventually had to let them go. So I fell back to some “ standard” neutrals, like navy tops, that aren’t always best colors, in order to really like
the fit and proportions and fabrics. One good thing about that was I finally figured out I want to take more dark neutrals as travel items because they just stand up better to what happens, for me anyway, and I let go a bit of more perfect color schemes & coordination in order to pack faster, lighter, grab outfits quicker.

But I’m still on a quest for getting it ALL aligned. I still do searches by various color names, just in case something pops up. Or look to see if a brand that make something random in a color that I love, makes other things in same color ( by whatever quirky name it’s called ).

(Star, do you wear things that are not to your liking, then?)

Question aside! YES! A great fit and feel is VERY important. Good to analyze the finer points so that wardrobe items do their job, and don't boss you around!

That said, for me personally, no matter how great the fit, silhouette, or fabric of an item - if the colour is off, I won't wear it. Sometimes you can adjust a fit, but you can't change the colour.

Oh yes, I like analyzing the finer points of what makes various items more preferred and wearable for me. Things like; what silhouettes, fit and cuts am I most drawn to and will actually wear? What are my preferred necklines? What sort of patterns or textures do I like wearing? Then, of course, there's the colours and fabrics. Heck, there's an awful lot to consider actually, isn't there?

As for drape, fit and cut in tops, it seems I prefer a slightly soft and fluid fit with a bit of structure. Nothing cropped, or boxy. No tunic lengths either. I like my tops to finish just around the hip bone. Great for tucking or semi tucks if I wanted to but could be left suitably untucked too. I do prefer a little waist emphasis, so tucking is always a consideration for me.

I do think these are important factors. Material is also important for me, for example I adore collared shirts but I’ve learned they need to be soft, and have drape and movement, not stiff and structured, for me to wear them.

Hello Fellow Fabbers

As you probably know I track my wears and have been doing so since 2021. Although I don't in deep winter, really not necessary as I have a very straight forward deep winter uniform of Turtlenecks, warm pants and puffer jackets.

What has emerged from the tracking is that the items that get worn most often all fit me to my liking. What I call the drape and shape of an item which mostly applies to tops and dresses. If said item is not too tight or too baggy, in other words a good fluid fit that helps camoflage any tummy bloat and if a top sits at the most flattering spot for me, a little lower than my hip bones, than these items get worn repeatedly, regardless of colour or pattern. So clearly this is the most important factor for me for an item to become a workhorse. There are other factors like fabric content, and so on. But drape and shape takes number 1 place. Going forward this will be my most important consideration when adding items to my wardrobe, and together with favourite colour and/or pattern I should ultimately have only pieces that are worn regularly and loved.

Is this as important to anyone else?
