I love what Zaeobi said about "architectural" drama. It's about simplicity and contrast and line vs. pattern or even colour. I adore that first outfit so much and think you could lean into that approach for more drama.

Zaeobi, thanks for this fascinating idea. I have heard "architectural" used to describe fashion styles, but I've never thought about it applying to me or the way I look at clothing--myself or others.

Nikki, I haven't worn much camel for a long time and hadn't considered it until it came back around. I've loved it on other gray haired women, but didn't think it would be right for me. I've recently changed my mind. I'm not buying gray anymore.

Jaime, good idea about contrast vs print. I'll have to play with that.

slim cat, I think you are right about white jeans. A long time ago I had some winter white wool pants that I wore a lot and made great outfits. I'm thinking maybe white jeans, but a dressier version--i.e. better fabric and fit.

Carla, I do have a couple of silk scarves with these colors. Didn't event think of trying one today.

Thank you so much for all your comments. Lots of good ideas to consider, many I haven't thought about and others I've forgotten. Even if I do stay home many days, I still like to feel put together, not blah. It makes me feel better.

Here's the sweaters I was considering, most likely the first. Only one left my size and today it's gone. The last one is one I bought a few weeks ago. It's pretty lightweight so won't be wearing it yet, but couldn't resist, even thought not so dramatic.

@MsMaven
The first word that comes to mind when I look at #1 is 'architectural' - especially when compared to the other photos, which have you questioning if that's what you want...

To me, 'architectural' drama is less about adding flashy colours & jewellery but more about the overall silhouettes & lines of an outfit. To me, it's a 'quietly' impressive way of dressing - more stately than ornately busy, if that makes sense. What do you think?

#6 is a ‘10’ in my books. Would ‘t change a thing. I like all your blazer outfits, but would suggest a patterned scarf repeating the colours of the individual solid items.

The caramel blazer/white pant combo looks great, I like the contrast with the black in it, a nice crisp look. Perhaps add a much bolder/ chunkier necklace or a black and white patterned scarf to complete the look.

I like outfit # 6 too, but I’d also try the leopard print top with the white jeans and caramel blazer.

I think drama comes into play when your outfit contains some high contrast, or bold colour combinations and shapes, think stripes, colour blocking, geometric or exotic patterns.

It could be a fun experiment to try to figure out just the right formula of drama to suit you best.

Well, I would note that both your favourites include high colour contrast, a structured blazer and pattern. Which seem like good building block elements for drama. Maybe pattern is what was missing from your outfit today.

To everyone: ## 4 and 6 are my favorite--especially #6, which is more current. #4 is back (seems so long ago) when I couldn't get a haircut.

Jules, I'll go back and look at the elevated basics post.

Roberta, thanks for letting me know it was you who had the twin. Right now I'm torn between working with neutrals and combining stronger colors. No reason I can't do both at different times, as Inge's post shows.

Christe, yes, white jeans can work in all seasons. I think my hesitation goes back to when I grew up in a cold, wintery climate. Also, I'm not in a place where I can observe what others are wearing when not extremely casual.

AJ, I love classic fit blazers, but so often I'm saving them for "best" way too much. My body has changed in the last few years--getting older. I need to reevaluate the fit of jackets. I can no longer wear curvy tailored jackets and maybe I need to change a size. The flowered Boden has gotten lots and lots of wear.

I notice that the Chico's jeans are a little baggy in the upper thigh. I have a pretty flat bottom and flat hips--I prefer a straighter cut in jeans, but I do like wearing these.

4 and 6 have that extra oomph. Not sure why...maybe because the blazers have a classic fit and the patterned items coordinate with the outfit.

I love the camel blazer iterations (the leopard!), and of course I love the Boden floral blazer because it's me that owns its twin, but I particularly like the red and cream patterned scarf against the bright blue sweater. I think that is dramatic without being tryhard. Colorful and eye-catching!

Jan 26 Drama

Inge’s post on Fashion Forward inspired me to do a bit of reflection. Add nuancedream and Runcarla’s posts using dramatic metallic pieces in daytime outfits, and something kept niggling at me. A feeling I’d lost something—could it be drama?

I’ve never considered myself a dramatic type, but I certainly yearned for it when I was a teenager. Sophisticated drama, as in a movie star or model’s skinned back bun and black dress. Well, pulling my hair back like a ballerina didn’t do it, and well, all black clothing was forbidden in my high school after some of the girls started a club called Satan’s Darlings. They weren’t wild, just having fun. Besides, I didn’t own a black dress until I was well into my 20s, and by then everyone was wearing one—a little black dress.

I had been looking at Nic+Zoe sale sweaters and the two I was most drawn to were high contrast: bright colors and dramatic. No, I’d pass on them and find something quieter.

Why?

So, I googled How to Be a Dramatic Dresser and guess what popped up first?

https://youlookfab.com/2014/05.....r-outfits/

This one also came up.

https://theconceptwardrobe.com.....s/dramatic

This morning I decided to copy the Fashion Forward photo. Wasn’t impressed. Like a normal day at home, I had no makeup on. I wore a barely noticeable necklace. I did wear my J. Crew caramel jacket, worn just a few times since I bought it, a basic N+Z black top, new, white Chico’s jeans, (normally I don’t wear white jeans in winter—not a rule—just what I feel comfortable in. Speaking of comfort, my Taryn Rose booties, which I haven’t worn this year because they aren’t comfortable anymore. Just to add high contrast drama.

Maybe drama isn’t the right word. It’s not that I want to be dramatic, but just to add some to make getting dressed more fun. Gardener Dramatic? Right now I spend a lot of time outdoors.

So for my own February challenge, I’m going to try to increase the drama. Don’t know how or even why. Seems like higher contrast might work, although I don't have high contrast coloring. More like medium. I’ve been experimenting with colors during the pandemic, and have banished gray to be replace by tan and camel.

Despite the daffodils, more rain and cold is coming. This challenge is for fun and to get me through the rest of winter.

My looks today. I need a haircut, maybe today or tomorrow.

##1-3 Inge's post inspirations, I'd add a Chanel bag I guess, and what I will actually wear if I go out. Old Boden wide wale blazer, Sakeroots bag, Ecco shoes.

##4-5 A couple of past looks that are more dramatic, but is this what I want? Another Fabber has this Boden blazer. Hat photo was my walking outfit a few weeks ago.

#6 J Crew blazer as worn in November, wearing makeup

#7 First daffodils bloomed Monday. Seems early, but here they are today.
