Bummer about the jacket!

Yeah, I think little tweaks can make a basic dress like that really useful. I added a small snap inside the placket of a shirt that has the same button placement issue — one button difference means either it’s too closed up looking, and open it’s cleavage city. I also use fashion tape on some shirts that have that issue, for a less permanent solution (Frank & Eileen shirts have this issue!). It works quite well!

You are all wise - the itchiness is a total dealbreaker. I put it on again and saw that it's entirely unlined (well, self-lined in some parts) which gives it lovely drape but also itches everywhere. So, back it goes! It's a shame, because I do love it. I'll keep an eye out for another cropped blazer with strong shoulders that's a little less exaggerated (and ideally 100% wool).

Without the belt was a fantastic idea!! Closer to the shift shape I usually prefer. Also, it fits perfectly if I undo one more button than is practical… maybe I can add a hook and eye but I don’t want to look risqué at work!

(I also tried on the larger size and it’s huge so I’m not going to post photos.)

The jacket is super cool. I noticed the same thing Jonesy mentioned about the where the sleeve is sewn into the armhole. I don't understand the creasing there. I think this is a good style to keep in mind, as you might find something similar at Zara or COS. Mohair has the same effect on me. I can feel it even if it's not directly touching my skin.

The BR dress is a good standard, in your go-to black. I don't find it dramatic or edgy, despite the color. Maybe try rolling the sleeves? Did you try it without the belt?

I wonder if the size up would give enough slouch to make it a bit edgier looking.

Also, I think your hair and shoes will add the edge. Maybe the dress doesn't need much drama.

I love the look of the blazer on you but the itchiness makes it a return. Mohair or angora do the same to me, even with a highnecked long layer underneath. The dress looks ok but not special enough for you. The best thing about it is that it is black and there are lots of black dresses.

I think if you are asking here, you know that both should be a No.

Will the itchiness go up or down for the temps you’d wear the jacket? But itchiness now (vs discovered later) would be a hard no for me.

Tightness in a dress you’re not super keen on is another message to return. There are other dresses out there.

I think the dress, in that size, might possibly be a winner.
You can change the whole silhouette of the dress by adjusting the sleeves.

If you play them, ( a little shorter, both straight and angled),
you might find a silhouette more to your liking, … and perhaps just dramatic enough.

An angled or cap sleeve would emphasize the shoulders. The model has that effect by her stance with arms held away from her body.

You might play and see what you come up with. Personally, for my wardrobe, I would be at the seamstress today.

Good eye, Irina, I folded them under. My blazer sleeves generally need to be shortened quite a bit so it’s often easiest to remove the buttoned part entirely. It comes out well, but yes, expensive.

For casual blazers I wear more like outerwear, I don’t bother with alterations and leave the sleeves long when I’m outdoors then cuff them indoors.

I just noticed that the sleeves of the jacket seems turn in. Are they too long on you? Sleeves with buttons cannot be shortened at the wrist, extra fabric needs to be removed at the top of the sleeves. It’s a common alteration but expensive.

I like the jacket in general, but the creasing, "ditch" sort of thing happening at the top of your arm right below where the top of the sleeve and shoulder meets would give me pause--seems like the tailoring is slightly off there, IMHO. For a piece that relies on impeccable tailoring, this would be a problem from my point of view. And then there is the itching!

The dress doesn't seem to suit your style to my eye (seems pretty classic, but since it's black it is hard to see the design details), but there is something to be said for a comfortable, washable, throw on and go kind of dress for the summer! I would probably ditch the belt entirely, but I can't stand wrap belts like this, especially in the summer, so YMMV ;).

Your disappointment in the jacket you fell in love with from afar reminds me of my own bewilderment when a piece I bought as a goal item doesn’t work out the way I expected. Sometimes, like the black/white joggers, an alteration can save the relationship, but sometimes it just wasn’t met to be & it’s time to move on.

Sounds like you are closer to a decision already. The itch of the jacket would worry me...but do try on with the kind of top you are likely to wear with it, because it's possible that it won't itch if you do that.

What drew me to the dress, and made me hope it would be a little bolder than the usual, was the shape of the arms. I like emphasizing my broad shoulders, but in this case somehow they make the sleeves sit in a less interesting way on me than on the model.

The more I stare at the photo of the XS, the more concerned I am by the fit in the chest. I'll take photos of the dress one size up, but it's a nice heavy fabric so my first impression was that it's too bulky. And I don't love it enough to have the larger size taken in at the waist and hips.

The jacket is gorgeous, It’s too bad that it feels itchy. I had an itchy blazer and someone on the forum advised that I wear it with high neck and long sleeve tops, however, the pokey fibers of the mohair still made me itch. I donated the blazer. Lesson learned….NO MOHAIR! My advice is to return and keep looking.

The dress could be a good basic for edgy accessories, but I’m not sure it’s edgy as a stand-alone item, it looks more like a modern classic. I like the sharpness of the shoulders and the sleeve length, but like Janet, I am not fond of self tie belts.

It is not the shoulders but the width of the sleeves that makes me think the jacket is too big for you.

I don't think fashionably oversized when I see it, I think too big!

But if you say it's the right size, I believe you!
Coupled with the itchiness and the higher price tag, I'd say send back.

I like the dress. It does not come across as dramatic at all, imo but a good, reliable, practical dress for summer.
