I'm late to weigh in here, but I like the sandals on you. I'm sensitive to the large feet issue as well, and I usually avoid wearing substantial/platform shoes with anything too delicate on top, as it makes me feel like the look is all big clompy feet.

Thanks everyone!

DH will be thrilled to be referred to as a leather professional.

Caro, I’m glad you are ok. Good news from Melbourne today too. I’m really happy for them.

Delurked, I’m not too worried about the noise because DH struggled to hear it. I think it may be a combination of the fact that the shoes are heavy, the soles are rubber, our floors are extremely hard and I have a big foot. No noise on carpet. Hopefully it will be ok outdoors. I don’t plan to wear them indoors - except to break them in. Maybe.

Greycat6, how annoying! Did you try an inner sole? I think here it’s actually the outer sole not the inner sole making the noise.

Echo, I agree. My older Docs are extremely comfortable. And durable.

But the jury’s still out. I don’t like pain I’ll try them a couple more times over the weekend, then decide.

I’ll report back!

I love the look. And Docs always require a break-in period. It's unfortunate, but after that, they often become the most comfortable shoes ever. I had a pair of boots in college that I wore into the ground. There was nothing more comfortable. I think if you wear them with socks in the house you might be able to break them in without pain.

Love the sandals! Good luck with the break in techniques. Please share anything that works with us.

I had a pair of sandals that made the sshhh sound as I walked. Actually, it was only the left sandal, not both. I discovered that the arch of my left foot collapses slightly as I walk. The sshhh sound was made as my collapsed arch pulled away from the sandal's pleather foot bed. As my foot rolled through my stride the arch collapsed and was held in place by suction and the weird sound came as the suction was released. I was able to reduce it by tightening the sandal straps. It never really went away so I chose to ignore it and only wear the shoes outside in noisier settings. I loved the sandals too much to not wear them.

Hi Brooklyn, We moved to Adelaide (from Melbourne) so at this stage I'm pretty happy about that. SA has had it easy; I really feel for Victorians.

Your idea of softening the leather sounds good & if they don't feel heavy on your feet then they should work for you. I bought some Teva flatforms as a replacement but they don't have the same edginess unfortunately, great for walking though. Still looking...

Love the look on you! Personally, I have nothing against shoes or clothing (like jeans) that require some breaking in, because once you’re through that, they are yours like nothing else, and fit like a dream. I don’t quite understand what the sound is, but it seems like it’d be less annoying than a squeak. Wonder if it’ll go away as you break them in.

I see you aren’t worried about the sound, but sounds on shoes are a killer for me, and I end up being quickly dissatisfied with any shoes that make or start to make noise. That’s a personal hard no for me.

I love the look but these would be a no for me because I lost the skin off a toe with stiff leather sandals which took a week to have feet that could tolerate normal shoes and swore never again... maybe I need to buy the leather softener your husband has.

Given you have professional leather handling skills available, my vote is keep because once the leather softens these are likely to be amazing. However you will need to proceed with caution and slowly break them in, DM boots are much easier as I always wear mine with socks.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, advice and tips.

I’m no closer to making a decision!

I initially decided this morning after reading what everyone said (especially Caro) that I’d return them.

Then I spoke to DH about the leather softener that Angie mentioned. I forgot that DH makes leather goods as a hobby (he has a lot of hobbies). Anyway, he is pretty confident he can soften the leather with one of the many ointments he keeps in our garage. And/or attach a soft leather insert inside the heel to stop it rubbing. (He made our dog’s leather collar and treated it with special leather conditioner to make it soft for her. It is beautiful.) No guarantees of course, but that made me start thinking about keeping them again.

I do agree in principle that shoes should not need breaking in but some of my favourite and most heavy wearing shoes (my Eileen Fisher sandals and my Frye boots) went through break in periods. Plus they are not actually hurting - yet. I just suspect that they will.

But I’ll do a few more test wears at home before I decide.

I’m not worried about the noise. It’s a ssshhh not a squeak. And I discovered today that my Eileen Fisher sandals do it too. I just hadn’t noticed because I rarely wear them indoors.

Caro, great to hear from you! I hope you are well, especially as I think you are in Melbourne. All the best to you. I watch the Victoria figures everyday and feel anxious (as do many of us in NSW) for Victorians and how they are coping with the lockdown. (For non-Australians, Melbourne has been in a long second lockdown.) But things are looking much better now!

Roberta, it’s funny how each generation likes to own a look. I have a similar story. Once I was shopping with my mother and niece (pre-pandemic) and my niece bought some sneakers. She showed them to my mum. They were very blingy. White, shiny, with pearls and big bow like laces. My mum, who loves bling, said “oh, you take after me, I’d wear those”. My niece pulled a face and quickly put them away!

RobinF, please show us your Docs

Love these! I have been eyeing them for a while (no thrifting for me during lockdown, so I can just dream). They really work for you. I don't have break in tips, but have had squeaky shoe issues, which drives me crazy. Sometimes it does resolve itself though.

I have some squeaky shoes I wear to work (not successful in fixing but love them so still wear them) but I do feel self conscious.

I don't have any experience with these, but I do love them on you and for your style! Do you have a cobbler near by that can soften the straps for you? I had a cobbler help to soften a couple pairs of Frye's that were incredibly stiff. One was a riding boot that was pinchy at the ankle. The other was a shootie that always dug in at a funny spot on my foot. Both are remarkably better than before, but not even close to plush feeling.

Sorry for the negative report. I love the look of them too! I bought a pair last year & sold them a couple of weeks ago. They were just so heavy - I just didn't want to wear them on hot days. I didn't wear them enough to break them in so can't comment on that. The noise never completely went away though, it really annoyed me but maybe I was just over them by then.

I wish you joy of them! I had Doc sandals that I called my driving sandals, because the sole was so sturdy that it made it easy to accelerate on the highway. Literally a leadfoot. I found them very comfortable and durable, but after a few years they began to feel too heavy and I deleted them. I kind of regret that now.

Funny story - I was in the Nordstrom shoe department some years ago, next to a teen who was slipping her foot into those very sandals. I exclaimed, "I have those! I don't have any experience with these sandals to share, though.

I will say that when shoes rub my heel, I generally do not succeed in breaking them in. Sometimes I can alleviate the problem by putting in my 3/4 orthotic, which raises my heel maybe 1/4" to a point that it no longer rubs. With sandals, that's not as great a solution, since you would probably see the orthotic in the open area. But maybe a heel cup could work.

The colour makes it for me - otherwise they might look a little incongruous with your style. Which isn't always a bad thing though...
I think they are cute on your foot too.

These look great! I find them flattering on your feet. Super cute with the outfit :)

I would walk around the house in them for a bit. See if they soften. Apparently, this helps too:

I like the look and love the colour, however I detest the idea that footwear needs to be broken in. If the project of breaking them in won’t ruin your relationship/feelings about them, then try Angie’s methods per her recent blog. https://youlookfab.com/2020/10.....appy-feet/ Nylon stockings might provide some slip/ease as well.

Funny about noisy footwear. I ended up donating a pair of gym sneakers that squeeked! I wore them for a year, but the squeak never went away, and it drove me crazy after a while.

They look really cool, but stiffness in leather when it comes to sandals is a killer for me. Maybe your feet are tougher. I love the style though.

Love the look of them. I just got some Doc Marten boots that I am debating (maybe I should do a post too ) so am apparently in the mood for klompy shoes. Everything I have read says the boots need to be broken in so it wouldn't surprise me if the sandals do also. Maybe you can protect your foot and wear them around the house for a few days?

I'd be concerned about the leather on the back rubbing, especially if you say it's stiff. Maybe put moleskine?
