I LOVE DOCS. DOCS FOREVER. That's how I feel about it. There is nothing more casual modern classic than a doc marten.

Like Smittie, I don't see Docs as part of a traditionally classic style. However, I do see ways that they could fit into a "CASUAL MODERN classic style".

If you want to stress "classic", an obvious choice would be to team black Docs with black bottoms (pants, jeans, skirts, dresses), or burgunder Docs with burgunder bottoms.

The floral Docs shown by Bijou are fun and could easily be teamed with more classic items, like the stripey blue & white dress (2 of the colours in the shoes) or simply with blue jeans and a white shirt.

Other possibilities:
- black Docs + white jeans + stripey black & white T-shirt or sweater
- white Docs + a breezy skirt or dress (in any colour), for a summer-ish look
- white Docs + black & white checked pants + a black or white sweater, year round
- bottle green Docs + black bottoms + bottle green sweater + maybe chunky white pearls (or just one chunky pearl as a pendant)

All these outfits could be called "casual modern classic" in my book.

Final tip: If you make sure the Docs are polished and well cared for, it will be easier to make them part of a classic style.

I so agree with Angie! I wear them all the time and love them. I tend to wear the shoes rather than the boots (really more because I'm lazy about lacing up boots), but I do own both. When I wear some of the more fun ones I get loads of compliments on them. Even my plain black ones got an excited compliment resulting in a quite long and very pleasant conversation the other day.

Enjoy them!

I know someone who wears burgundy docs with a fairly toned down style otherwise. Almost modern classic but she doesn't totally eschew print. They look great.

Emily, Smittie is right, I wear my Docs with jeans and also casual dresses - I find they are a great shoe when doing a lot of walking. I rolled my ankle and needed to wear shoes that would give good ankle support - hence wearing Docs now (I had not worn them since my university days). I went for some floral docs. In finds I have included the sort of dress that I wear them with.

Docs are classics but they don't strike me as part of classic style. I see stompy boots as very edgy and tough.

But I still think you can pair them with classic pieces effectively. Fellow fabber Bijou was wearing hers with a Breton top and jeans the other day.

I have a pair of stompy black fluevog boots that I wear with a basic navy sweater and jeans. For me, this is not a style I want to wear every day because it is quite tough.

I have strong associations with Docs as being alternative, but I'm sure other people don't have these associations.

Thanks, Elizabeth! I've always admired them; I just wasn't sure if you can style them in a more conservative way. I'm a bit old to carry off the pretty, short, floral frock and Docs look now ...
Will definitely give them a try.

Well, in my oh so humble opinion, Doc's ARE classic. It's all in how you style them, and if they fit with your personal style/look. And even if you feel they are at "odds", having a juxtaposition in your look is very modern, so that works too!

Hi,

I was wondering if Doc Martens are at odds with a casual modern classic style? Would value some opinions.

Thanks!
