Yeah, no, I'm talking about new fall items.

I've been trying to track ins and outs as well as budget recently, so let's see what I've bought in 'late summer' (August 1 to now):
2 pairs of sneakers, both for fall but theoretically wearable now
2 short-sleeve knit tops, ditto
a layering tank, for summer
a cashmere cardigan on super-sale, presumably from last winter, for the winter
a white linen jacket, definitely summer-y in look, but maybe I could get away with wearing it for a few more weeks?
a pair of gear workout shoes
and a handbag / work tote (in dark red), so that's not particularly seasonal except for the color

Maybe that's why I feel annoyed/deprived, because I haven't really bought anything in particular for fall yet?

ETA to Claire: I'm pretty sure Nordstrom will do price corrections on items that later go on sale. I've read about other forum members contacting them and getting a price correction, anyway. Especially if you haven't worn them yet, I can't imagine it'd be a problem.

Ah, I just read your clarification for Angie, thanks.

Nice that you were able to return that NAS item. I was just looking at some boots at Nordstrom and was wondering if I should buy now (and not wear, since it will be too hot until December) and then see if the price comes down then. Would it be unethical to return them and re-buy them if my size is still available and on sale later (if they are unworn)?

Well you're not talking about end of season merch, are you Laura? I assumed you were talking about Labor Day sales on new F/W things.

I know for me, our weather gets warm so fast (Feb.) and I can't wait long enough for them to put everything out. S/S comes out in dribbles, and I never know if I should choose things that are available at the moment, or wait (there's the gamble) and hope something I like better comes out a few weeks later.

I have a short Fall/Winter season, and it starts late. So it absolutely makes sense for me to wait until I can actually wear the things I buy. And by that time, I can find enough that is reduced. I like to buy things at the first discount, so 30% is fine with me. If you wait longer, odds are your size and what you really want is gone.

As for Spring/Summer, mine comes early and is long so it makes sense for me to shop in January-February when it first emerges, not on sale.

Color me confused. Do most of you buy fall stuff way before summer is even over??
I plan to try and shop more seasonally in the future and I figured Sept. as one of my stock up months. Start of fall, Labor Day sales, back to school sales.
My other 2 seasons I figured around previous shopping habits - late Dec./early Jan. for winter, to coincide with Christmas gift $$, and sales. Then May for warm weather items, utilizing birthday gift $$.

Angie, mostly I am looking at fall items, not summer items - there are several websites that are having site-wide sales right now even on new items. But then my fall/winter isn't as extreme as others, weather-wise, so that gives me more flexibility in what I call fall.

Claire, yes - I actually returned a NAS item that I hadn't taken the tags off of yet the other day, because I decided that my money was better spent elsewhere. But most places have a 30-day return policy or I've already taken the tags off in an attempt to be more decisive. :/

Interesting. I can see how you feel like you'e missing out, Laura. And I bet that there are many forum members who resonate with these feelings.

In my case, I see it as a plus actually. I'm so sick of end of season stuff by the times the sales roll around, that I can't bear to shop them (for myself). Plus, the cherries are gone. I firmly maintain that the best stuff is available at the start and middle of the retail season - unless you are very lucky with marked down designer wear that is available in your size. I am much happier refreshing for the next season early.

There is no right and wrong here, btw. It's horses for courses. xo

Ugh. Story of my S/S wardrobe every year. When will I get it right?
It's seems like it's a gamble either way, unless you've left tags on and bought from a store with a long returns window.

The sales aren't not on things I've already bought, they're on things I'd like to buy, but can't afford because of the other things I've already bought.

Argh! There are a ton of Labor Day sales on I'd like to take advantage of, but I can't - I've already bought all the fall items I can budget for until it's actually fall. Sigh. This is one downside of buying only once or twice a season, you've already spent your budget.
