Lisa, I know what you mean. Now I'm wondering if I should have bought one. But I don't live in Winnipeg..

Smittie, yes! When my son was little and played soccer, sometimes it would be snowing during games and practices!

Oh I absolutely want one Una, but because it will be a fun thing for me, I don't want to invest at the $ level your friend is offering them at. I understand the quality difference, but it isn't that important for my end use I'll hold out for a Costco cheapie :)

Mine is most useful when I'm commuting to work-- in the winter I usually wear a skirt and tall boots with tights (or even fleece lined tights). I walk and take the subway. On the coldest days, this adds extra insulation to the thighs and especially knees (which are usually uncovered in my skirt+boots combo). The Costco one is surprisingly "thin", it's not at all thick like a puffy. More like those micro-ultralight-puff things that pack down into nothing. So I'm not bothered by any added bulk.

I wonder, do you wear them over a fairly seriously-outdoor type of insulated leggings, as opposed to just ordinary fleece tights? For those in really cold temps.
I could see myself wearing one ( just the right fit, though!) with fleece tights and booties as a form of fun casual errand-wear, but at warmer temps, such as what at work would be wool skirt + tights weather. I would probably need the tights instead of bulkier leggings so could stay less bulky in the skirt fit, and so the overall oufit would not be super-warm but might be a skirted form of "sporty luxe" .

Janet, as Colette said, they're kind of long. Until Una's comment I didn't understand them. Our climate is warmer than hers, so I didn't see them being of much use here. On the other hand, they're inexpensive enough that you could try them out with little investment.

Una, I didn't see your comment. Yes, we'd love a picture in action!

Janet, my friends company has non quilted longer skirts in synthetic that aren't quite as warm, but drape better and a bit sleeker. The best you're going to get with these is JFE anyway! I will model mine if you'd like.

I kind of love them for the sporty vibe and the warmth (could one conceivably run in one?), but I fear quilting (i.e., texture and bulk) + the hips of doom will just look wrong. And it would probably just slide up my waist to rest beneath my boobs, as all skirts do.

Thanks Una and everyone for the explanations. I have never seen anyone in my area wearing one. I had a visit to Costco planned for today and they had the down skirts at my store. They are cute. Longer than I imagined, it came past my knees. I think I imagined something shorter like the length pictured on the link Una provided. That styling is something I might consider, kind of like warmer skirted leggings. I might have bought a shorter one. But, let's just say I'm NOT outdoorsy so I don't think I have a need. Would love to see pictures of how you all wear yours though.

Una, thanks. I think I'm starting to understand them. You could have a long puffer, but that would be less flexible that a short down jacket and a skirt. With two pieces you could take off one or the other depending on temperature, activity level, etc. I never heard of them before YLF.

Think of it as a puffer for your lower half. :) I have different lengths for cross-country skiing, standing around outside, or walking to and from work. Mine zip all the way off on one side and can be adjusted on the other side depending on what you need to do - walk, ski, stand and freeze. Super-useful in my weather, actually. Just about everyone I know has them and even guys who play hockey wear them because you can get them on and off easily.

Alaskagirl helped me find one for my daughter's birthday (Thanks, Una!). Yesterday, for a long walk in the rainy forest, DD wore her clover purple one with patterned tights, faux fur topped Sorrels in rust and grey, fuchsia down vest, mustard and navy scarf, and a grey and mustard rain jacket (Yo, Krishnadoux). It's a look, shall we say. I suspect she sports it just like that in town, too,

She skis in it, wears it winter camping and picnicking. She throws it on over her "teacher clothes" to take the children outside at work. Several of her middle-aged colleagues have started wearing them too (though probably not out to dinner like her!)

Lisa, let us know how it works for you.

Duchess, do you wear it while engaging in sports?

Una, I knew you had one. I didn't know you had several. I guess that shows how useful they can be.

Janet, I know what you mean. I didn't buy one. One reason is it isn't cold enough for long enough here.

Colette, I think Una (Alaskagirl) would be best to answer this one. I think it's used while doing sports outdoors, rather than as a fashion item. Is that right? So for example, cross country skiing.

Krish, I didn't see your answer. Thanks for the explanation!

Colette, good question! If anything in down is to protect you, the concept of making a skirt out of it appears somewhat counterproductive, don't you think? I imagine one would wear it with thick, ultrawarm leggings: feet engulfed thick cabin socks peeping out of the top of Sorels or other heavy duty winter footwear, oversize cable knit sweater, down vest or some kind of warm bomber with fur cap. Of course this works well at temperatures between 25-35 degrees, on a dry day. But anything below - which is the case for most of Canadian winters - the skirt + leggings would be too light.
