Agree a wrap may defeat the purpose as it will be more open and not as close to the body (think of sleeping bags - you need just enough space for warm air, but no more). The two way zipper allows me to adjust as needed for ease of movement - zipped all the way while sitting or standing, zipped open a bit from the hem to walk. Also I size up because i'm weairng all my regular clothes underneath.

My first thought is the cost of the down bedding/quilt, plus zippers, etc., versus the price of a ready-made skirt. Would it pencil out? My second thought is the mess of feathers flying everywhere, even with the most careful pre-sewing before cutting the pattern pieces. To me, this is a nightmare sewing project. Just sayin...

I agree with quietgirl; I would hesitate to make a down skirt in a wrap style. The extra bulk of two layers on the wrapped part would bother me. And if you decrease the bulk by not wrapping completely (having some kind of angle on the top piece, for example), then it could be drafty. I love the design of the ones Alaskagirl shows, and I'd try to copy those. It looks like the waistbands are not filled; you could use regular fabric there.

Looking at these I believe some of the warmth is coming from the close-to-the-body fit (ie/ no cold air can get in under the bottom of the skirt). A-line coats are not as warm as more fitted ones in my experience. For myself, I also wonder if a fuller skirt would be comfy or cumbersome when sitting while driving.

I do sew...a lot!
I personally would not sew a quilted skirt in a wrap style. Think of DVF wrap dresses. They are made of slinky knit. A wrap style skirt in a quilted fabric will add lots of bulk to the body. (Yes it would be warm.)

Alaska girl's examples are pencil skirts (slimming). The zippers add a vertical line. Wraps tend to be moe A-line for walking ease. Does this silhouette work for you?

Food for thought. Sounds like a fun project for the two of you!

All of my down skirts have a two way full length side zipper so you can just put on or take off without removing boots, like for skiing. I HIGHLY recommend Skhoop skirts.

http://www.skhoop.us/collections/skirts

Disclaimer: a friend owns the US company and several of the models are also friends (and real athletes, not professional models!).

I'd think that the two most important issues would be:
a) walking ease so you can move - presumably you're wearing this over something else so you could just make it wrap only part way down. I don't know if the RTW ones usually have any darts or pleats or whether they're just a square.
b) finishing the seams so that down/fill doesn't leak out - something like a flat fell seam would work, if you can manage it with the thick fabric, or of course you could serge it if you have a serger.

I'm not familiar with what down skirts look like but I think the plan to go with some pre-quilted bedding fabric is a good one. I think a wrap shape should be quite straightforward to sew also. I like the idea of Velcro too. I have some wrap beach skirts that I made for myself and they fasten with Velcro. Any basic wrap skirt pattern could probably be used and just treat the fabric as you would a normal heavy fabric.

No experience, but REI, Northface, Canada Goose, and Sierra Trading Post all have them. Maybe you could see enough about how they're constructed from online photos to give you some help?

I have been craving a down skirt for winter practicality ever since I learned about them 2 years ago. But every link or lead I followed came up empty. (Till the $200 one from Sweden I found today.)

Now, my daughter has offered to sew me one! We just plan to use quilted bedding type fabric and cut it like a wrap skirt with Velcro for the waist fastening. (It's not for serious outdoor pursuits, more for keeping my legs warm when driving or for brief outdoor walks.)

Any sewists with experience to share or recommendations? (I'm thinking Beth Ann maybe has done this?)
