Whoops! Yeah, lol, too late now I have a 40 year old down sleeping bag from REI. It still works! Admittedly though it’s the dog’s bag now…

Thank you, LaPed, for this information. It is valuable to know. April, please tell us more about how you wash the leather coats. I have heard that leather purses can be washed and have mschvine washed a pair of leather sneakers. It worked but I was desperate and ready to throw them out if it did not work.

I take really bulky stuff, like comforters, to the laundromat to take advantage of the extra large washer/dryers. I suspect top-loaders with agitators are okay if you run them on a gentle setting, and it depends a lot on the strength/thickness of the shell fabrics too. I did once have an agitator rip the lower leg halfway off a pair of jeans that had a hole in the knee; the hole got caught on one of the fins, and cotton fibers are weaker when wet... Luckily the jeans were destined to become cut-offs anyway. :D

This is how I wash my down coats. I take my down comforters to the professionals for laundering. My machine is not big enough.

This is the way I wash my down. Before I had a front-loading washer, I'd take it to the laundromat.

LaP, thanks for posting. I wash everything with zippers inside out, because it’s quieter, and the zippers can’t hurt anything else.

I have had a cream long puffer for years and the cuffs and collar get dirty fast - have always treated those areas with Clorox 2 (not regular Clorox!) and then washed according to instructions with regular old detergent. No problems so far, except the one time I under-dried the coat and it got a sour smell. Which washed right out the next time, when I dried it fully.

I have also machine-washed leather jackets with no ill results, so perhaps I have laundry nerves of steel.

This is the first I've heard of not using an agitator. Ah well, so far so good! And the spin cycle gets most of the water out. No way I'm buying a new washer just to wash my puffer. I like the idea of turning it inside out in the dryer, though!

Here's a link from one of my favorite down manufacturers (made in Seattle!) with detailed directions for caring for your down gear and garments: https://featheredfriends.com/pages/washing-care

A lot of folks know about using dryer balls to help prevent clumping. Another good trick is to turn the garment inside out, so that the water can drain through the lining, which is generally more thin and permeable than the outer shell. Before moving the item to the dryer, gently squeeze it to remove as much water as possible (remember down gets really heavy when it's wet!). It's also possible to clean down-filled items by tub-soaking, but never use a washing machine with an agitator as it could snag and tear your garment. :(

Two tried-and-true down cleaners are Nikwax and Revivex. I've found both pretty effective. I have down-filled items that have been in regular use for a decade or more, and I think washing once a year has helped keep them in rotation. It's good to remove dirt and oils from the feathers to keep the insulation lofty.
