This has turned out to be a real treasure trove of starting spots so thanks everyone. Obviously body type is a major factor in whether or not a brand will work for an individual, but sometimes it is just overwhelming to know where to begin -- and so I am so happy to have this list to go back to, put together by women whose style I admire! So fantastic!!!

Fun thread! Taking notes over here :)

Underwear: Victoria Secret low rise boyshorts. The rise is perfect on me. Actually, my real favs are the Hanky Panky boyshorts, but the VS ones are a more affordable alternative.

Bras: Spanx Brallelujah - I prefer front closures for everyday; Marlies Dekkers for special occasion - comfy, well-fitting, and sexy!

Long-sleeve tees: Enza Costa. The cut is great, since they don't hug my midsection and have the perfect drape.

Boots and booties: Frye for Western or moto style; Ash for heeled trendy style

Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Jeans: Mother skinnies - stretchy, like wearing PJs; Rag & Bone fits my body fairly well too

I love Vince jeans. Mostly I adore the fabric they use, it is velvety soft but only minimally stretchy. The fit is actually slightly too big in the waist for me, but I just fix that by wearing a belt.

My favorite underwear is still the Gap Low Rise Hipster. I only wear cotton underwear, and I have lots of problems with big backside/small front side, and these do not ride up or cause wedgies. I am annoyed by their quality of late (the fabric is definitely not as durable as it used to be) but I generally buy them on sale, so I'm not too fussed about having to replace them more often.

I like the suiting at BR, if they have a cut that fits you. They are one of the only mid range places that still makes lined wool suiting. And the price is super reasonable for what it is.

I like footwear (boots, oxfords, sandals, which is pretty much all I wear) from Born, Frye, Naot.

I will give you my tip for underwear, since I can say in the past year or so, I tasked myself with finding some TRULY seamless panties...

Soma Vanishing Edge panties are all that and then some! They have sticky grip on the cheeky parts so where you put them, they stay. They are seamless - even under yoga pants, and even if you had on only thin leggings, still no panty lines. They are $$, but when they are on sale, I try to stock up.

Well, how much fun is this thread!

Don't get me started on boots! I love my Gidigios SOOOO much. They are unique and irreplaceable, but hopefully will last a long time. The Harley-Davidson line actually has some amazing offerings that are functional but stylish. Dr. Martens, of course. I haven't found as many Fryes that work for me - I love them in theory, but somehow they always have that Western cowgirl look on me.

Allsaints leather jackets are so drool-worthy, although I have been coveting the softer Vince ones lately.

Can't wait to peruse everyone's tips and suggestions for their faves!

What Isabel said. Even in Canada, I've begun to shop at Nordstrom's, for precisely that reason. Incredible selection and brilliant customer service. I go across the border to do it!

My Canadian recs wouldn't help you much, I fear. And I also think body type/ job plays a huge role here -- what works well for one won't for another.

But, in case it helps -- some of my personal favourite brands/ items:

Jeans -- True Religion Cameron 100% cotton BF jean; Citizens of Humanity "Racer" skinny (sized up one -- it fits a bit small on the thighs), BR cream jeans that Angie recommended, and Kut from the Kloth for lower priced but still really high quality jeans. Not all their styles work, but those that do are excellent value.

Jackets: I get a surprisingly good fit from Zara right off the rack and the quality for the price is also amazingly good. It's definitely fast fashion -- to try a look or trend -- but wow, how nice when it works.

Nicole Miller and David Meister for sheath dresses.

Stuart Weitzman and la Canadienne for footwear -- pricey, but worth it. Also, Sam Edelman -- I really like the styles and the comfort level is also generally good for me.

Theory for lots of stuff, although right now I am struggling with the cuts of the new pants, and also trying to get a jacket to work for me...so I may have lost my dream.

I get a lot of stuff at Banana Republic because we have free delivery and returns here and the price is right. This year their fluid knits were pretty good quality. I know how I fit their stuff, so that helps.

J. Crew for knitwear and linen tees in summer.

Vince Camuto for the tube skirts and some other items.

Viva, this is such a tough question. At least for me. Two years ago, when I had to literally start my wardrobe from scratch, I found two blazers at the Limited that have become two of my all time favorite. I hadn't been to the Limited in probably 10 years ! And my body changed so much that the old standards , like Ann Taylor , just didn't work. It does take a lot of trying on and exploration.

For me, the first place that I start is Nordstrom...for everything. The reason is that I feel that Nordstrom is an absolutely no-risk buy. They will take returns forever for any reason.

Things I love to buy over and over again:
Theory black Max C, a moderate bootcut pant that works for me for work and travel, dresses up and down. For me fit like custom made. Used to come in a variety of fabrics including their old 3-season wool and a cotton twill. Alas, the new cut and fabric leave much to be desired. Was in the habit of stocking up when Theory.com does its F&F and seasonal sales.
Cole Haan Cassidy bootie. On me it's similar to the Acne Pistol and Rag & Bone Newbury, but a more comfortable fit on my foot. The 3" heel works for me for all day, on my feet, running around (see above, pants devotee = commit to a heel height). So comfortable I've collected these in multiple colors and finishes. Sometimes on sale at 6pm and Amazon.
Sweaters: Eileen Fisher, always interesting fabrics, colors, and textures.

The recent shopping posts have me wondering: for those things you really love to buy, what's the best tip you can give? For example, Una: what are your favorite tough black boots, if I wanted to go after a pair? Rae: which black jacket should I get, if I am going to get just one? And for Pete's sake, for those who love to buy underwear, where do you go?
Since I'm trying to use my budget more carefully this year, it would be so great to have a place to start.
