Hello again girls. I'm three pierced now, and I love it. I notice I get more looks, and I'm wearing my hair shorter and back from my ears more.

I love the combinations, at work I still just wear one pair of earrings at a time - but on Fridays maybe in the second hole, it sort of says "Look I do have multiple pierced ears, and I am old enough to be your mother." My husband loves it, he brought me a lovely set of hoops that are wide at the bottom, and come to a point where they go through - three matching pairs in three sizes.

Daughter just shrugs and tells me to grow up. PS - It took a while but I found someone to do it with a needle again, getting pierced is meant to hurt, and it takes a few seconds for the needle to go all the way through. I probably wont experience that feeling again, but I do savior it.

LOL! "Well, I guess I've come back into fashion!" Says the 90's grunge girl who is now pushing 50.

After some years of wearing only small pearl studs in my lobe due to moving up the corporate ladder, I recently added in 2-3 more diamond and pearl studs (Xmas presents) for a total of 4 on each side.
Maybe I should add back the nose piercing?

My daughter is 15 and has two piercings in each ear, plus one in her nose, so I don't think it's going out of style.

Here in Berkeley there is a piercing and tattoo joint on Telegraph Ave called Zebra. They do piercings with needles, not guns. All the little girls from Berkeley and the eastern suburbs get their piercings there so that they can feel badass.

So, no, piercings are not out of style. However, I don't see the young girls wearing hoop earrings much. They mostly wear stud earrings. Some of the older girls connect their piercings with lengths of chain.

Sleepers are what we call small plain hoops in Canada, too. :-)

Wendy, I think RoseandJoan is right -- multiple ear piercings are an ageless look. Double piercing was a trendy thing to do in the 80s, and now so many middle-aged women still have "extra" ear piercings that it has become mainstream. As shaz mentions, younger people are more likely to experiment with "fringe" piercing fashions, like lips, cheek, body etc.

I'm a middle-aged woman, and I have five deliberately unevenly spaced ear piercings. I have had more than that, because in the 90s getting more piercings was de rigeur, but many have grown closed. I wear small fat white gold sleepers in them 97% of the time, and never think twice about them. They are just part of my body -- even more than my wedding rings, which I remove every night! (The reason being, I think, that I use my hands a lot, and like them ring-free as much as possible while they are in use. Earlobes don't do much). :-)

Aida, it would heal. I got a third hole punched in my right ear when I was forty. I had two in each ear that were deliberately unevenly spaced, but it had always bugged me that they didn't look uneven enough, because I'd accidentally let a third piercing in my left ear go closed in my late twenties. So I got another hole punched on a whim one day while passing the shop.

I have one hole in my left ear and three in my right - more evidence of my very slight anti classic streak. My first set (left and right) were done by girlfriends after a party with a needle, an ice cube and a potato! The second in the right with an older sister, at a store which used a gun. The third in college, same way. In my 40s I stopped wearing earrings in the extra holes for some reason but last year I bought tiny gold triangles that I wear nonstop in them and I love the look - like scattered glitter. I wear small gold stick-like studs or thin hoops in the standard holes, typically. I really love having my piercings!

I find the sleeper earring idea so interesting. I definitely grew up with the gun (or the friend with a needle -- an old boyfriend swears I pierced his ear, although honestly I do not remember!).

I don't think you need to worry, multiple piercings and fine earrings are both trending http://www.telegraph.co.uk/fas.....piercings/ besides I see double piercings as quite an ageless look.

Thanks LisaP and Aida, I would LOVE another. I have big lobes, so I think it would look nice, but its not something I could wear to work, so I will have to wait for a holiday. And find a woman with a needle.

Sleepers are small hoops, usually just plain, in gold or silver. It might be an Australian or English term. When I had mine done (with a needle by a friend's mother), everyone had sleepers put in. I occasionally wear other earrings, but its the stark contrast between the simple perfect roundness of the earring, going though my soft and complex ear that I enjoy.

Pierced was much less common in those days, and over the years I have convinced a lot of girls and women to get pierced. I was a bit sad when my daughter had hers done the modern way with a gun and stud, as the feeling of the traditional way (more pain, more intimate), was a rite of passage to women hood for me.

What is a "sleeper"?

RE piercings I have quite a few. Eight in one ear, five in the other including a rook. Plus nose and navel. I only change the first lobe piercing as the rest are sort of a PITA to mess with. Honestly I hardly notice other people's unless they have a septum piercing, because those are hard not to notice. Gauging seems to be the big thing these days.

I've never heard the term sleepers, I don't think. I've three on one ear, two on the other. It is a nice simple, clean look in my book. I think young people do tattoos now, and the ones coming up after them will have nothing, lol!

Another with double ear piercings, and wish I'd gotten another one or two done way back when (I don't think they'd heal if I got them done now *sniff*). I wear pairs in both holes daily. The bottom is almost always something big; the top usually has diamond studs but I'll also pop in little spike studs and occasionally a larger pair. I wouldn't worry about how you look in your sleepers if you like them.

I have double piercing since forever or feel like it anyway. I think with the younger people there are now so many other areas to get pierced that would have been more unusual years ago and that's what they are doing with each trying to get something a little more unusual or exciting then their friends so they are starting there and ears don't seem to be as big a thing except for those that like lobes with a view

I am really attracted to multiple piercings - especially when styled with pretty, dainty studs in a mix-match way.....mini hoops included. I am older than you and actually had two more done on my upper year late last year ( I only have regular one-in-each-ear piercings) and loved it . But one hole became so badly infected I had to have the earring removed, put on antibiotics (my whole ear and side of my face swelled up overnight ) and that was it for that experiment. I think it's all in the way you style them, and I don't think age has anything to do with it at all!

I love the look of gold sleepers. I am double pierced so I can wear all combinations, top pierce, bottom pierce, both pierces, big earring in top, big earring in bottom. I'm more into smaller earrings, rather than big hoops.

Now I'm fifty I don't see younger women wear sleepers so much these days, and even double piercing seems to be on the way out. But I just love the simple look, that complements me and draws attention to me, rather than to the earrings. What do you think, or am I just old fashioned (pierced for 35 years, double pierced for 25)?
