I'm so sorry. Years ago I knit a wool fair isle yoke sweater for my grandmother. The nursing home washed and dried it in their industrial machines. It still makes me sick to think about it.

Commiserating here too. I turned my teenage daughter's favourite sweaters into Barbie clothes by accident and she has almost forgiven me (at 32).

On the other hand, if you give them to someone crafty, the latest thing is to wash them to shrink and felt them, then cut and sew mittens. The better quality wool, the better the mittens.

I just accidentally put DH's black cashmere sweater vest in the wash with the darks and ran it through the dryer. Upside is I might get a new sweater vest. :)

Laundry disasters are so annoying. I'm always thinking, "It's only clothing; it could be worse." But then I think about it again every time I pass the washer/dryer.............. Life is too short to have sweaters that shrink!

I am so sorry to hear that. I have quite a few merino sweaters and need to play close attention to this - I usually do either cold or lukewarm handwash.

I did exactly this! One wash and my Tippi became a child-sized garment. I haven't had that issue with my long EF cardigan, and suspect that not all merino wool sweaters respond as drastically to warm water.

Runcarla, we can cry together. ;-)

Suz, I just saw that you have had wool problems of your own! I have no solutions for moths, but I've been told by others to dry clean or wash more frequently. I pack up my wool things in plastic vacuum bags for the warmer months.

Oh no -- so sad. We have had similar problems here from time to time and I do think the Tippis are especially vulnerable to shrinkage. Alas.

Too late. It's already in the bin. And I'm not crafty -- I'm merely arty. Sewing is beyond my capabilities.

Oh rats! If you're crafty, don't toss it just yet. Run it through on hot to felt it completely, then cut it up and see it into a little pouch or something.
Sorry!

I accidentally put my silver Tippi sweater in a warm, regular wash with all the socks and white tee shirts etc. It shrunk. A LOT. And developed a hole. I couldn't even pass it down to my daughter -- it is ruined. Waah. :-(

I actually have had success washing my Tippi sweaters on the cold/delicate cycle, so I was surprised at how easily they can be ruined by a warm wash cycle. For those of you who like merino sweaters -- be warned!
