This is off-topic, and I have to admit I always stop short of precision response when it comes to training with my dog, but when we were working on our heel - well, my dog is very short. I got a longish wooden dowel stick and a plastic end cap for it, which I'd smother in peanut butter. I held the stick down in front of the Lilypup to reward/lure her into the heel position.

Oh and yeah, the Lilypup *does* know when I'm just babbling and am not committed to enforcing a command. LOL.

Fern - thank you for that link! I was looking at her blog the other day, but your specific link helps a whole lot.

I still didn't order any shoes quite yet, but no matter - just wore my ugly, practically neon white gym shoes. It was suggested that I try practicing on the leash in the backyard at first, if necessary. It was raining off and on all day and I had a ton of things on the go, so I took Gus errand running with me, and then when we got back we did some 'leash training.'

It was a good thing it was just in the backyard - he managed to squirm out of his collar (I'd forgotten to tighten it back up as per the Sharpie marker line we put on it the other day, specifically for this intensive leash training).

Gus is very challenging, but like I said - he has come a long, long way since I adopted him. This phase (be nice on the leash in the city) is just the next step. In any case, I'm pretty sure that at least half the problem is that I'm just too "nice" - making cutesy noises at him all the time. I can't say, "Gus, c'mon you big lug..." in a soft voice and expect him to listen.

I had a minor 'aha!' moment today - I thought it was kind of peculiar that my self esteem has been in the tank, and that I somehow ended up with this dog that needs me to be strong, tough and determined. I have a funny/eerie feeling that this is one of those 'meant to be' things.

I put on my (tacky white) gym shoes, my ancient old jeans, one of my gym shirts, a gym jacket, a ball cap (it was raining out there) and we did drills. No, I didn't look all that ....and Gus wasn't too impressed. He wriggled out of his collar after a few rounds of close/loose-leash training, at which point I remembered to tighten up the collar to the sharpie marked point specifically for this purpose and we started again...and when he realized he wasn't going to be able to wriggle out of his collar, he decided to fling himself on the ground instead. It really was funny, in a 'you had to be there' way. We practiced the leash walking for a good hour, and he did quite well after all (well, after a few shenanigans).

In the meantime, just wanted to say he is a very good boy, and that this is the final hurdle - going on walks where he has to stick close to me and behave in the city. He's *great* off leash and has learned so many commands. On the leash he's pretty good, but...the issue is that when he sees another dog, he lunges and gets all 'tough guy'. Being almost a hundred pounds, this isn't so easy to manage.

Ack! Once again, I've veered way off topic.

I have a crazy schedule right now, but I'm definitely going to get some (hopefully stylish) city dog walking shoes (thanks to everyone's great suggestions) with good arch support and a bit of grip on them.

...and Gus will learn to walk nicely in the city. Eventually.

I don't dog walk but will weigh in on the shoes a bit:
Cons run a bit big so go by fit and not by size. Hard if you can't try in person I realize.

I have some similar Payless Champion slip on mary jane type (mine don't have a strap) shoes that I used at work in early morning running around, jumping up and down ladders, moving around merch before customers type of thing - they are really comfy. I like my slip on Pumas too. But i couldn't hike in those as I'd be afraid I would step in a hole or something and not enough grip on top of foot to stay on.

You might check consignment stores for nearly new non white footwear. I have found the best deals on gear - seems people buy nice stuff and then a year later discover it unused and consign! I have seen hiking shoes, new running shoes, etc. We have some stores around the Bay Are that specialize in used equipment and gear so you might check for those in your area too. Maybe a light hiking shoe is what you need instead of a cross trainer or runner?

Good luck with your furbaby - you are lucky that he found you And vice versa of course.

We do the dog park/neighborhood walk everyday and I just wear my regular clothes with rainboots for the mud. They do clash hideously, but I am usually covered by a trench-length raincoat all winter (Pacific NW). I'll wear regular clothes/shoes during the dry season.
I do wear "gear" if we're off-roading.
VC, you might see if any of these appeal:

Gus looks like such a sweetie!

Ok. This is a serious topic. (Love those green shoes by the way, the #2s). I have yet to find my ideal solution for dog walking outfits. Outdoorsy, yoga pants and hiking boots style is fine by me for all day hikes - you can be pretty cute in that - but it's the in-the-city thing that's so tough.

My deal is, I need shoes that I can slip into fast when I come home from work, that don't clash hideously with my office wear, which I'm not going to change out of because I like to go out right away (how's that for a run-on sentence!).

I got some Champion "mary jane" sneakers from Payless shoes, actually, that are very comfy (also kinda reaching the end of their lifespan). I have to say though - while they DID get me around the stark white trainer thing and had no laces to tangle with and were cute with many things - I feel they ended up looking pretty fuddy-duddy with the office wear.

I'm thinking about embracing frump and going the whole English-tweed route this morning...

Sorry I didn't catch this in time. Luckily I probably couldn't have been much help anyway. I actually used to wear regular converse before I had some work done on my feet. I did find that I had to wear a scary small size in regular converse all stars-- more similar to the size I wear in men's shoes than women's. However, since I've had my feet worked on I haven't been able to go back to comfortably wearing regular cons, and my feet also grew a bit (I had joints in my feet that were seized up and did not move but now do because of PT, so my feet need a little more room to spread out lengthwise). So, my jack purcells were a larger size than my Cons but I'm not sure how much of that is my feet and how much is the difference between the styles.

The slip ons are really cute--- I'm sorry to say that I don't know if the low-profile version of the purcells with the slimmer sole like that has the same insole. If you have the chance to try a pair I guess you'll know!

Just wanted to quickly clarify ...the photo with my dog and his buddies is when he's off with my dog walker/trainer - I am not the one looking after all those doggies, although I would if I felt like I knew what I was doing.

I somehow adopted a very challenging doggie, but I'd do anything for him - he's come a long, long way and is totally worth the effort. It's just taken him awhile to get over spending most of his early life in a shelter. I remember getting phone calls from the shelter every week for several weeks after I adopted him..."Just phoning to see how you're doing with Gus.." and then, "Oh, you're keeping him? Well let us know if you need any help" etc.

He made Marley of "Marley and Me" fame look like a walk in the park.

In the meantime, thank you for all your great advice. I'll get myself some proper shoes today and will post back if/when I find something that works out well for this 'capsule'.

I just have to say how nice it was of you to adopt a tough shelter dog! And I know about the ones who have been bred to pull! I once felt sorry for an elderly neighbor's dog and walked him regularly for a while. I had no idea he would nearly pull my arm out of it's socket! A little training for both of us would have been a real help.

I love the pictures of your pack on the mountain hike; they all look so happy! Good luck on your stylish gear quest. You're doing a great thing.

Sorry to keep asking questions - but do you know if the Jack Purcells are similar sizing to the regular Converse oxford style? The reason I ask is that my regular shoe size is supposed to be a women's eight, but I wear 7.5 in Clarks and apparently a 38 (7.5) in Eccos...and some size 8's have been too big.

Meanwhile, I just looked at my regular converse and they are a women's 7. I never wear a size 7, but these are the ones that fit.

I'm considering these, just for fun (I realize they aren't lace up but I'm kind of liking the super-casual but still fun vibe):

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/co.....ltback=180

It appears from the description that these are fairly snug-fitting, and the 'unlaced' aspect is purely for looks.

Thanks for your help Elly (and everyone else too!). I've got a kazillion shoes in various shopping carts here. Working on it

I like the jack purcells because I have high arches and have an insole that is more similar to those of serious athletic shoes--- the insoles are removable and you can add a supportive insole or orthotic if the original one doesn't work for you-- plus the lace up style keeps them secure while still being fairly low profile to wear with shorts, ect-. I can't wear non-athletic shoes for serious walking either, but can do boots with good support and/or an supportive-type insole, the jacks, and sandals with good arch support that strap securely onto feet (although those are hard to find without looking a bit gear-like).

Thank you all so much! I feel better about this now. I do love the look of Converse shoes for 'bumming around' in very casual jeans, it's just that I've found they aren't great walking shoes for me after all - I have very high arches, and it's turning out that I need more support than this. The only other running or semi-athletic shoe I have are some old Asics GT2140's - white with blue trim, and have only ever worn these to and from the gym.

I looked into Docs, and the ones I liked seemed like they'd be too flat for my feet. Meanwhile, I seem to be drawn to any/all skate-looking 'fashion sneakers' but realize that they are not going to be supportive enough.

Off to investigate Jack Purcells and Athleta - thanks!

Won't be wearing jeans for much longer. It gets very hot, and I'm usually in clam-length shorts or a skirt.

I agree with JennyAnne- It sounds like excersise to me. I never worried about looking good when out with my dogs. Most the time I was in rain and wore a rain coat, rain pants, rain boots...sometimes rain gloves and a hat. I looked better in the summer but still wore good walking shoes.

If you like the look of cons with the type of clothes you'd feel comfortable going on a couple-hour city walk in (jeans, ect) then there are lots of other similar oxford-type sneakers that give a similar vibe but more support--- I personally like jack purcells.

If you are walking hard enough or long enough that jeans (or your summer equivalent) is too hot, sweaty, or will rub, then I'd probably go for hiking clothes from places like Athleta--- some of which don't even look like "exercise" gear if you don't pick stuff with racing stripes or 10,000 pockets. A lot of gear companies make "lifestyle" clothes that might work without looking too crazy in the city.

I don't have any really great advice because where I live it is absolutely ok to look a little like you are climbing a mountain pretty much at all times and I do hike and do outdoorsy stuff so I tend to mix "gear" with jeans and casual clothing for dog walking depending on weather conditions and where we are going/the potential for dirt and mud and rough play.

I say it's exercise, and you can wear exercise clothes if you want. Whatever will be most comfy. You can find more interesting athletic shoes than white if you want, but I think white is just fine, too.

Late to respond but I too have a dog and love taking the little guy for walks. I have been wearing the dansko tennie/clogs and am finding them extremely comfortable even for long walks (like 2 or 3 miles). I usually wear jeans and a couple of layers like a sweater and jacket and then a raincoat over the lot when necessary. I also wear a suede hat as a rain hat. I love all these pictures of the dogs. The pictures of them as a pack are so cute!

Thanks everyone - definitely smiling here because there are so many dog lovers on YLF.

Still need decent shoes, and will look into better-looking athletic shoes that are not white and will also investigate Docs as per Andrea's suggestion.

I managed 'ok' yesterday, but was wearing flats, skinnies, chiffon-ish blouse with tank underneath. It wasn't quite the right thing...but luckily I had flats that had a rubbery bottom (Naturalizer) so that helped. In the meantime, he's not bad - just that we're practicing the idea that when I turn around and go in the opposite direction, he does not get to keep going where he wants to go. He did get it, and I will just need to continue to practice these things. He was very good. Just that at first, there was a bit of a test...we're heading to the local city-ish dog park and about a block before we got there, I turned around and headed in the opposite direction. Doggie didn't like this idea. It also took a little bit of practice to keep the leash loose, but still very close to me and to teach him not to pull on the leash at all. It's working!

I just need better shoes and clothes for these things. Maybe not so much clothing, but the shoes are going to be important. Cons hurt my feet after all. White runners? No...I don't like wearing these outside of the gym. I'll get it sorted :)

Heeled lace up oxfords won't work. Pumps won't work. The weather's still a bit iffy so sandals won't work (and I'm not certain I have any that have a decent grip on the bottom). I've just discovered a wardrobe hole - I don't have sensible city shoes for this challenge. In the woods and mountains I don't care if I have ugly shoes etc.

I'm in Seattle so our summers are very mild. I usually wear my "monk strap" Doc shoes. I also have Cons that I put inserts in because, like you, I found they were not supportive enough. With the inserts they are adequate for 1hr, IME. In cooler weather I've been wearing my 20 hole Docs also.

Most of my colleagues wear cross trainers or multi-purpose sneakery looking hiking kinda sorta shoes. I'm the weirdo of the bunch.

Thank you Andrea! That's exactly what we're working on - the loose-leash (but still close to me) walking in the city. Lots of stop and go...it's not like a giant off-leash hike or anything. That's a whole other situation, and my doggie is very good off-leash now (thanks to my excellent dog walker/trainer) and with other dogs.

Hmm...Docs...are there any in particular you recommend? What do you do in summer?

Thanks so much!

Thanks BiscuitMom! Actually he's pretty good, and has come a long way since I adopted him. He now needs to learn how to be nice on the leash. He's great off-leash, and has learned his basic commands and has gotten past his issues with other dogs. The next phase of his training is learning how to behave on-leash in the city and in busy situations.

I've got someone really good helping me with this - a great professional dog walker/trainer. The first phase has been off-leash hikes way up in the mountains with other dogs. Basic commands, tons of exercise and socialization with dogs.

Thing is? I can't always take him up in the mountains, and want to walk him around the neighbourhood daily, but he needs more training when it comes to behaving on the leash in a busy city situation.

We did use the haltie for the first few weeks. I don't think he needs it anymore, but we'll see how he does on city leash walks with me.

Bonus pics of my dog with his friends up in the mountains - in pic#1 you can see that he still needed the haltie/leash as he was learning to be nice and socialize with other dogs, and in pic #2 he no longer needs a leash or a haltie on off-leash mountain hikes.

Forgive me, but I can't resist posting another pic - this is when Gus learned the importance of the "Leave it" command (pic #3) - see the porcupine quills in his mouth? Ouch! They were safely removed and there were no problems. The good news is that he definitely now understands that it's a good idea to listen when you say "Leave it!".

I'm a jeans and Docs girl, myself. I walk many dogs in suburban and city environments so hiking shoes are not part of my closet. I like Docs, I wear them anyway and find that they offer plenty support for me. Jeans are sturdy and universal but I'm not out for exercise - we are "just" training. And if you're training for loose-lead walking, that means lots of starts and stops (think red light/green light. pulling = red light, slack lead = green light) which composes the majority of my dog walks.

I also wear a lot of layers - t-shirt, light sweater or hoodie plus a light jacket and sometimes a scarf too. I also have a big raincoat. However the most important part of my outfit is my bait bag! :)

PS - Biscuit's Mom mentioned head collars - for a big, powerful dog this may be a great idea! I recommend the Comfort Trainer. However I will tell you can't (well you CAN but you shouldn't) just slap it on and go - you need to desensitize the dog to having it put on and worn. Without that head halters can be very unpleasant for most dogs.

Your dog sounds a lot like how Biscuit was when he was younger! Even pulled me down a flight of stairs once...always pulled HARD on the leash Have you tried the 'head leader' type thing? It supposed to really work great, yet not hurt the dog in any way. I would highly recommend checking out Victoria Stillwell's (of It's Me Or The Dog' tv show fame ) website, episodes, she takes owners who are at their wit's end over behavior/training issues and transforms the dogs and sometimes the owners! She has books on dog traing- she is AMAZING! Uses ONLY positive reinforcement, not fear like that 'dog whisperer' guy Cesar... I think it's called http://www.positively.com Anyway, for walking I almost always wear jeans and SAS oxfords...they are extremely comfortable for long distance/standing a lot and have a great grippy bottom! Good luck- your pup is adorable

Thanks! I suspect I'm way behind-the-times when it comes to outdoor/semi-athletic clothing. I am going to look for some non-white athletic shoes.

Meanwhile, I just went over to the Zappos site, and they have a 'shop by outfit' feature, and lo and behold, they even have 'outdoor' outfits. This will help me a lot, I think.

Here's one example I found (pic #1). I'm not crazy about the pants, but otherwise could at least try something similar.

Meanwhile, I think due to the YLF Effect, I seem to be drawn to slightly more 'fun' looking and somewhat sleeker shoes (pic 2). However, I wonder if I should go for something more gear-ish/outdoor-ish such as something like the shoes in pic #3 - what do you think?

I wasn't thinking I'd get right into the whole outdoorsy look, but maybe I might have to. It's never been my style and although I've done a ton of walking (running in the past) and going to the gym, I've just never mastered that outdoor style. I don't think I've ever been into an REI store. I mean, I went camping *once* and managed to forget the tent poles and the water. On that same trip, I drove three hours to the nearest town just because I had a craving for bagels.

I'm definitely 'outdoor style' challenged

I don't have a dog, but... I have a seriously poisoned eye for white athletic shoes. I refuse to even wear them to the gym. So instead I buy grey or black athletic shoes, which look a good deal better and sleeker and even borderline fashionable if you go for the sporty look. Trail running shoes often come in non-white colorways and might be a good idea for you if you are running w/ your dog on uneven paths, hiking trails, etc.
