I ALSO took great care to wear stuff my Mama liked when we were together as adults (not so much as a teen). My own Mum was very frank when she didn't like a look on me. Sounds like your Mama is too

Thanks Suz. It’s my little bit for sustainability. I try not to give up on an item easily.

Karen, thanks. I use the machine because I know I’ll make a mess if I don’t! The stove top gives you more control.

Lyn, thanks. Acid dye sounds great. I’ve tried going the other way - dyeing over some pale grey items to make them warmer. I’ve not had much success. Grey is a very persistent colour and it tends to come through in the undertone.

You look amazing as always - this polished and so not RATE by my current standards. And I always love your DIYs. I overdyed an overly whiskered but not distressed pair of black jeans a few years ago and love the way it freshen up something destined for the donate bag. A nice solid deep black.

I bought a cheap big stockpot that I marked "Not Food Safe" on the outside in Sharpie and did it on the stove top with some dyes from Dharma Trading and they worked great. You are reminding me I should do some more - it is so satisfying!

What a great idea overdying the same color! I DIY dyed an old antiqued pink jacket a few days ago to steelgrey and loved the results-it did come out a bit like acid dye (perhaps lack of enough color)-but like it that way!

Thanks Angie. The jacket was very satisfying. It really is as good as new. The tie dye was OK for a first attempt. But I think you are being kind about my RATE-ness. My mum HATES the step hem jeans :)

Thanks Lisa and Xtabay. I have a few necklaces from that same Etsy seller and they are favourites. Well made and unique.

Go for it JAileen! I did my tee in a front loader washing machine but a stove top gives you more options. Mine is not a true dip dye. I just rolled up the tee tightly so the dye could not penetrate the layers to the bottom of the tee. But the result is not as "clean" as a dip dye, if you know what I mean. I hope you will show the results.

ST and NM, thanks. Teal + ombre + tie dye. It's a heady combination. I'm excited :)

Bijou, I have seen your lockdown outfits. I don't think you need to worry. But I'll take polished RATE, thank you very much.

Ms Maven, thanks. I hope you give it a a go!

I’m planning to use the Rit dye in a big pot on the stove. It’s not a pot I use for cooking - I keep it in the garage. I can’t use the washing machine to do ombre because it’s a front loader. :(

These outfits don't look a bit RATE - you look so cool. The ombre tie-dye is so unusual and interesting - a great way to make a plain tee anything but ordinary. Hope you will report back on the teal project!

Great outfit--the necklace, jeans, jacket and tee all work together so well. I love what you've done to the jacket--it looks great as does the tee. I have a weakness for tops in that color myself.

And now I'm telling myself to add the possibility of dyeing items when I'm tired of the color. It's been a long, long time since I tried it myself.

Thanks Sally. The jeans are very comfortable. They have faded a lot with wear. I thought about dyeing them too but they are getting thin. The inseam has already split once and I had it repaired. I don’t think it’s worth the effort. But I think it’s worth it for a robust item that you still like.

JAileen, I knew you’d like the ombré tie dye! I used RIT too. In the machine. It’s pretty easy with the liquid version. My tip is to use dye fixative afterwards (I also used it in the machine). The colour stays more saturated.

I am indulging my RATE side in lockdown.

Pics 1-2: driving down the CPW of these step hem jeans. They are getting close to their use by date but I’m pushing on. Worn with asymmetric hem tee (also a few years old). The necklace was made by an Etsy seller from an upcycled 19th century button. Now that’s old.

Pics 3-8: I have a WHBM jacket that I wear frequently when walking my dog. It has faded in the sun over time. I decided to overdye it. I did an old white tee at the same time. Pic 3 shows the jacket and tee before. Pic 8 shows the jacket and tee after. Good as new Even the jeans look better!

Pics 9-11: I had a go at tie dye. I was going for an “edgy” Raquel Allegra-ish tie dye. I rolled the tee tightly to get an ombré effect. I’m thinking about doing a teal version next. I’m happy with this but I have some improvements in mind. Worn with the same jeans (pushing on).

Hoping everyone is staying well and strong.
