I am so loving these dog stories!

Wherever Bodie was raised, someone taught him not to hang near the dinner table when humans are eating. He's quite agreeable about going into his little bed or on "the growly rug", which is clear across the room, when we're eating.

On the other hand, he finds it very hard to follow the "leave it" cue when something delicious hits the floor. He can do it easily if your face is near his but if you stand up and toss treats on the floor, his willpower cracks.

We'll get there.

The most fun "game" we're playing with him is an awesome one called "race as fast as you can to the library every time the doorbell rings". One of us just goes outside and rings the doorbell while the other one stays in and races him to the library. This way, I can sign for packages or welcome visitors in peace without him underfoot.

DH is the dog person, but could not decide if he wanted to be the disciplinarian or the play pal. I ended up the disciplinarian with Ranger - a black lab who was a bit of a cement head. He pulled so hard at the lead when excited that I ended up with strained pec muscles. (Thought I was having a heart attack and ended up in emerge for an EKG etc before figuring out the cause. ) I taught him to walk to heel by swinging the lead in a circle in front of me, and him - if he advanced too far, he got a slap on the snout! Very food driven, and once pinched (and ate) an entire banana bread cooling on the kitchen counter. Also got into our neighbor's garage and ate a substantial portion of a bag of dog food that belonged to said neighbor's dogs. Pills were easy - just toss in the air, and gulp! Loved lettuce and apples. Didn't know what to do with carrots. Left my veg garden alone but ate all the gooseberries off DH's bushes.

On the other hand, Ranger never got up on furniture and never snapped or bit - even when crawled or stepped on by young children. He was submissive around our two cats (6 and 8 lbs to his 45-50) as well as other dogs - so never got into trouble. He didn't jump on people, but would push in front of us and wrap, around their legs and roll over on his back for a belly rub. He was a chewer and knawed baseboard corners as a pup, as well as DH's slippers, DH's gloves, DH's belts and some of DH's truck when he was left in the cab alone for like - 5 minutes. Rawhide chews kept him happy as did the occaisional branch or small log. He knew the borders around the kitchen and dining room and was trained not to cross over and beg for food, though he would sometimes sneak under the dining room table before the meal and keep a low profile in anticipation of dropped food. He cleaned up under the baby high chair pretty neatly and saved me the effort.

Sounds like your Bodie is doing very well by you, and you by him.

I’d be interested in what your trainer has to say about training Bodie to be alone.

Practiced a lot with Lilypup. I got her when I wasn’t working, but a job was only a matter of time. Started with a few seconds and a hand signal and stretching it longer and longer... until now she paws my head and tells me I need to go already, she needs her alone time...

OMG - those Westie faces!

Behavior update: we have gotten on the schedule of an in-home trainer to address dog-reactivity and separation anxiety/isolation distress.

Bodie is all terrier. Needs A LOT to do -- jobs, games, skill-training. Digs holes if given the chance. Goes into a trance at the sight of squirrels, chipmunks, bunnies. Chews and chews and chews.

My westies are sweeties and so whilst they have the typical terrier instincts to hunt and have to be on leash when walking, they try to please. Westies are known as "the sunniest of the terriers" and they just love making people happy - so they are very sociable and playful, on walks they make friends with other dogs and people very easily. I joke that if we had a break in they would welcome the robbers, they are not good guard dogs.

Both dogs are food and walking obsessed, loving nothing more than adventures with their favourite humans. We love their crazy ways and they rule our household, rewarding us with lots of love, cuddles and laughs. Bijou loves to watch the TV to bark at the animals that come on the television. We once took a video of her barking at herself on TV, she loved it!

I want to add another good feature of my dogs : they do not bite. Not at the vet, not being groomed, not at the kennel, never. I don’t know how that happened. I told my husband we’re lucky they’re nice. He said no, they’re lucky they’re nice!

Maggie is a small to medium dog, a fuzzy Polish Lowland Sheepdog and at about 8 years old now is still a playful puppy. She is very smart and that causes her biggest problem. In spite of lots of training and knowing all the commands, she has to think about them when given. That can make her naughty. It helps that she is very treat oriented and has never chewed anything. She even still plays with her first puppy toys. She also does not jump on people and was easy to potty train. She is friendly but will bark if someone rings the doorbell.. she is very vocal and could be taught to “sing” or “talk”. She adores the grandchildren but does not know how to play with them. She brings them her toys but will also grab a sneaker or something and push them with it, probably part of her herding style.. she is very social and wants to be part of everything. Bubble blowing drives her nutty. She chases and jumps at the bubbles as if eating them, which delights the grandchildren.

I spend a fair amount of time wondering just how big Smokey’s working vocabulary really is. I think he plays “dumb”, while understanding much more than he lets on. Every so often he surprises us by making connections that imply understanding new words..

Lovely thread! Gorgeous pics! Our black lab truffle can do a ‘high five’, not quite as controlled when she was younger, but still high five. She can also do bear, and she can ‘speak’ and ‘paw’. And walk to heel, come back when called and just about sit stay. I adore her! She’s not led by food. Our yellow Labrador, porridge, loves all food! She can do paw and other paw, but absolutely walk to heel without a lead, and she loves a swim! I love her lots too, but she’s a ‘baby’ really and it is Truffles spirit that I find infectious. Utterly up for long walks.

My standard poodle pulls on the leash unless I work with her at the beginning of the walk (basically walk in circles until she watches me and not everything going on around us). Other than that, she's very well behaved. She sits on command, comes when called, doesn't chew non-dog toys, doesn't beg, and is generally very intuitive about what she should be doing.

The greyhound rescue is neurotic as hell (Example - he won't go up the two steps from the foyer into the kitchen without help. And by help I mean I just have to touch his collar - not pull on it or anything). He's getting better. He's great on a leash and never pulls. He doesn't sit - I've heard conflicting reasons for that - some say because they've been trained not to and others say it's just their physiology and it's not comfortable. He'll lay down instead.

I have two terriers. For me, the most important thing is when I open the front door and tell them to wait, they don’t rush the door. If our Jack Russell got out, he would be hard to catch him because he’s so fast. Mostly they are good, but they do bark a lot. We have a squirt bottle to help with that. And they don’t beg at dinnertime, either. We don’t give them any people food ever.

JoJo is one year old standard poodle who says hi to Bodie. She was a dream to potty train and slept silently in her crate from day one. She finally walks nicely on a leash and is not barky. She’s been slow to learn good manners when we have guests, though. She is 50 lbs and wants to greet everyone by jumping up on them (like a freight train). It’s an ongoing challenge we are always working on keeping her calm, as jumping is just not acceptable behavior. She just can’t seem to control herself and our training efforts have yet to bear fruit. She also likes to dig the occasional hole in our backyard! But she’s the cutest love bug who brings so much joy (I’ve given up keeping her off the furniture!)

Ok. One more: what I’ve given up on. I don’t walk Lilypup at strict heel. We did all this training so she wouldn’t shy when I waved something overhead. Problem with is, she really was right about the matter. I’ve dropped a lot of things on her head, poor doggie!

I was just thinking about the early days with Lilypup. There was a turning point in our relationship. She’s a pencil squib and loved obedience class. Loved to show off. But there *was* a single defining moment when she decided to Respect My Lead. We were in a pet store and this dog started yapping its head off and charged us. I ‘Cesar’d’ it and it dropped its butt at my feet. Lol. Lilypup was like ‘oh.’

This in turn reminds me of when my goddaughter was little, maybe three or four, and decided to go running wild in Borders Books. Her grandma was all ‘stop stop stop’ and she just ran faster. I stepped out and said ‘STOP’ and she just froze dead. Grandma was all ‘Ooh. Voice of Command.’ Lol.

There IS such a thing. It’s very interesting. I like to study these things.

Bodie is doing very well. My 3 Samoyeds were all lovely dogs. Sammies are known for being stubborn and for pulling on leashes. I was pulled down very hard by Sophie, our rescue, the first time I walked her on a leash. I thought I had lost my teeth. I did manage to teach her to walk without pulling. I rewarded the desired behaviour and ignored the behaviour I did not want. Tasha and Christie were puppies when I got them so teaching them to walk on a leash was easier. Sophie was 5 and I don't think she had ever been walked.
I insisted that my dogs came when they were called. This took some training with Tasha. She liked to do her own thing. We would be walking in the woods and when I called her she would look at me for a long time before coming. Tasha loved running off leash on Mr SF's island so she learned that coming when called meant she got to run off leash. Christie and Sophie just came to me when I called them.
All 3 dogs were extremely good in the house, with other people and with other dogs.

I do sometimes wish I were martial. Lilypup does give everything a good long think before obeying. The one total non-negotiable is Stop. Stop means total immediate stop and you don’t move until I say so. We have that one down.

I will say tho Lilypup is pretty good. I can leave her outside a shop to wait for me (altho it has to be unleashed). She’s really a herder. Very independent. A good communicator... actually, the thing about the obedience thing, her English is a little iffy, but commands given bodily are readily understood and complied with.

I really think the breed makes a significant difference and can help you shape your training. Some dogs were bred to be attentive and some specifically to be independent, depending on their "job".

I've had a terrier since he was eight weeks old. He was housebroken almost immediately, sat the first time I asked him, was very fast to learn down and stay and comes immediately when I call him. He also can been unpredictably terrible with other dogs, completely fearless in the worst way, and will not stop barking when he thinks there's a threat.

It's not ideal but I'm satisfied because I feel like between his responsiveness to me and my own observations I can protect him well enough and it's really safety first for me. I don't believe I could change him without harsh treatment and he's my little bunny rabbit so that's out!

Good boy, Bodie. He's come a VERY long way. Well done.

Sam is a VERY good boy. He listens and is well behaved because he's just that type of doggie. He flies in the plane cabin with us like a dream, and is as good as gold when he visits or is at airports. He's not bothered with fireworks or thunder. He's just a really good doggie. Jasmine and Rosie were MUCH naughtier.....and egged each other on.

Sam is not food focused! He's an EXTREMELY picky eater and you can't train him with treats. He is extremely bad at taking medicine. Again - not into treats. Whatever we can get in liquid form is poured down his dear little gullet with a syringe. And it's all very dramatic.

Our little rescue, Bodie, is successfully learning come, wait, stay, take it, leave it, not launching after any item that hits the floor, and which items are "approved for chewing" (chew toys; dog treats and dog meals) and which are not.

He's having a harder time with drop it, with not freaking out when he sees another dog, and with being a polite leash-walker who doesn't drag his human under every bush in search of chipmunks.

What about your dogs? How consistent are you about asking for certain behaviors; which ones matter most to you; are there any expectations you've abandoned?
