DH's family is more formal that we are, but we've dressed for the holidays as long as I can remember. Growing up, part of the fun was spending the morning in our special Christmas pajamas (Lanz flannel, anyone? So 80s) but then going upstairs to clean up and put on our new clothes from Santa!

Velvety, we're tired of turkey, too. So mom and I decided to branch out and roast a goose. I can't wait to see how it turns out...

My side of the family dresses nice, but not formal.
My in laws (they have four teenagers still at home) are generally pretty casual, with said teenagers (and some of the adult kids) in PJ's or loungewear...or whatever they were wearing the day (and two) before.
Sometimes I feel so old fashioned.

We will be spending Christmas day at my sister's with the whole family. Nobody goes uber fancy, but everyone will be presentably smart casual. The older crowd will be sporting festive sweaters. I haven't decided if I'm going with jeans or a dress this year.

When my grandparents were alive, we always used to have Christmas dinner at their place and it was an affair! The good silver and china came out and everyone dressed up. My grandmother definitely would have considered it rude to wear loungewear to dinner, and I could definitely see her banishing you to the kitchen to eat your dinner there if you tried. I guess that habit stuck with me, because I always feel like I need to dress up (at least a little bit) for seated dinner parties, even if the host says it's casual. Sometimes I am more dressed up than the hosts, but I feel like it's a sign of respect. They put a lot of time and effort into the party, so I can make an effort in my appearance and disposition.

It'll just be me and my husband for dinner this year, but I'm thinking we'll probably still wear smart casual since we're actually making a fancy roast dinner. : )

Ever have that feeling when you've called someone, forgetting what time zone it is...and you realize you've woken someone up? You feel mortified. I would feel like this if I went to someone's house and they were dressed in PJ's or other lounge-wear. Like I was interrupting something, or it was six o'clock in the morning.

Khris I totally agree with Katja's last post! You are very sweet to worry about upstaging the hostess, but ultimately you should feel happy in what you're wearing. My family does dress reasonably well for the holidays (my side of the family is much dressier than my husband's though). I am almost always the most "dressed up" and that is fine with me :)

EDIT: And if we have ANY company over, family or not, I am dressed. The only people to see me in PJs/lounge wear are my husband and very occasionally my sister when she's coming over simply to watch tv or something.

Yes! We all like to dress up at familly (and friends) gatherrings, especially Christmass/Easter/Birthdays/New Year.
I also dress up when I am the host myself, and make sure my DD and DH do the same (In fact I plan our outfits for when we are hosting dinner paying very much attention on beeing comfy but still dressy--like a sweather dress with leggings and accessories (and ballet flats) for myself and DD and a good shirt with premium jeans for DH).

chewyspaghetti, you're gracious to worry about upstaging the hostess, but the hostess doesn't have a clue. She's living in a different mental universe. Dress the way you want to (with style, grace, and respect for your family and the occasion) and don't give it another thought.

Hubs and I wear pajamas around the house as a rule, but we always put real clothes on for company. I can't imagine staying in pajamas with people over... seems analogous to leaving laundry all over the floor or not cleaining the bathroom before company arrives. Not trying to judge your family in ANY way; that's just how I would feel inside.

Still, if they are the hosts, then I guess it is their call. Maybe you should start announcing dress codes whenever they come over to your place. They might take the hint or get more into the mindset that family gatherings warrant some effort.

I LOVE staying in my pajamas all day with my husband and kids. It's a real treat. We do this every year on Boxing Day. On Christmas day, it's usually just us and the grandparents, so we do put real clothes on, but it's informal. Plus, when you're planning on eating a big Christmas dinner, comfort is more important than a slim-fitting evening dress. :-)

If, on the other hand, I've invited friends over, or if it's a bigger family gathering with aunts and uncles and cousins, we dress up a little more. Still no evening gowns, of course -- more like smart casual. That's what most people seem to do. But if someone chooses to wear their sweat pants, it doesn't really bother me.

My family and Hubby's family are both very casual. Christmas day garb is usually sweaters, jeans, maybe khakis. I am the only one who wears a skirt.

Christmas Eve we go to church, so we wear church clothes there. Men wear dress pants, women wear skirts/dresses or slacks.

We do dress up for holiday gatherings. Even though I won't actually be leaving the house on Christmas morning, I'm planning on wearing a cute dress with leggings and my super cute apron for running around the kitchen. I have to be able to still crawl around on the floor with my kids so I need to stay comfy, but I'm on Team Dressy so I'll put a little sass in my outfit! Sort of a cross between a MOTG and a put together hostess. I'll dress my daughter in a cute little Christmas dress and my boys in nice jeans and polo shirts. My in-laws are actually pretty good on holidays even though they're a casual bunch in general.

The women in our family always dress up a bit at the holidays - nice dress, sparkly top, something you wouldn't wear just everyday. The men aren't as dressy, but they still wear a shirt with a decent sweater and trousers, or good jeans. If I'm hosting I usually change right before guests arrive so I don't have to peel potatoes in my "finery"! I think if you've gone to the bother of setting a nice table and cooking a meal that it doesn't hurt to dress up, just a little.

When I was growing up my Mother loved having a reason to get dressed up, every holiday she had her pearls and a skirt on or dress pants. With my family now I find i do the same and encourage my kids to "put something nice on" a little dressy. I have gone to realatives on my DH side of family and they are in loungewear and uber casual. I lam with you, I like it if the hostess can dress up as well, esp. a holiday

Yes - my parents and cousins dress up on Christmas Eve and Day, and definitely if they invite guests over! My mom usually follows the traditional red-with-sparkles route, and my dad is usually in a nice button-down shirt and dress pants. My above-childhood-age cousin is usually in some type of hip get-up, incorporating shine and red. She usually dresses her daughter to the hilt too. I try not to be underdressed, even though family gatherings make me want to dress comfortably above all. This year, I think I'll be wearing a tunic-length red cowl neck Calvin Klein sweater and black skinnies and a long pendant. So it's presentable but comfy for the home.

Katja- you're right. The only time I have seen my SIL in anything other than loungewear for several years was at her wedding. It just seems more rude to me to invite people over and not get dressed than it does to show up not dressed as a guest somehow. I guess it's that whole idea of not wanting to upstage the hostess.

Half of my family always makes sure they are presentable for any gatherings, the other half wears loungewear/pajamas- and I don't mean for Christmas morning. This weekend, we went to my SIL's house for a holiday dinner for their side of the family. I wore a silk blouse, black vest, sparkly bangles, black skinny pants tucked into suede boots. When we arrived, she was in a velour sweatsuit (which doesn't even fit her anymore), her son was in flannel PJ bottoms and a tee shirt, and her husband was in his work clothes (he's a carpenter- so work boots and sawdust covered workpants). The rest of the family dressed casually but still presentable. The other half of my family is also split- with my parents and my family dressing casually appropriate and my sister's family in pajamas/loungewear. It makes it so uncomfortable for me to be at a gathering with someone so inappropriately dressed. No matter how much you you dress down, the loungewear is going to stick out. If you invited us to your house, why couldn't you be bothered to get dressed in actual clothes?
Does anyone else deal with this?
