Unfrumped, I like your suggestion, and I am going to look for a soft blue or teal blouse because I really like the idea of trying that with the skirt. In fact, I was originally hunting for a teal blouse but could not find one, and that is how I ended up with this! Funny how that worked out isn't it! There was a Tracy Reese item in teal that showed up on the screen when I typed in teal, and then I remembered that I typically like her items, so I typed in Tracy Reese and there is was. No luck with the Ivory though.

I have plenty of Ivory and I already like that look with the skirt. Does anyone think the skirt would look good with lavender? I have a lavender blouse. My daughter puts orange and purple together all the time and it looks great, but the tone of my skirt would be much more intense that the lavender which is much softer.

Gigi, I do wonder how many other people with soft autumn coloring struggle finding items? I may very well start another thread to see what they do? Super idea! Everyone has been so helpful and I truly appreciate all your suggestions, it is giving me a lot to think about.

I think it 80% not 100%. I think the silhouette is wonderful on you - you look awesome in the pencil skirt with loose top and booties.
I think you could wear the colour and pattern but it is harder to carry off than colours that are your best. This skirt could look great with blue, the right teal, maybe even a blue-ish grey, or ivory.

Good for you, Staysfit, to stay true to your principle of keeping only things that make you feel absolutely great. It is hard when something is maybe 90% what we want but not 100%...it's all too easy to keep it and then regret doing so later when something better comes along.

I have a long neck too. And I think your neck is beautiful, by the way! I hadn't thought of the collar of this top as being a problem for long necks. I guess that is why I instinctively stay away from collars that are wide and deep cut. I always learn something new on YLF!

I'm sorry that you've having a hard time finding colors that match the soft autumn color palette. It is so frustrating when the colors and patterns that are "in" don't work with our natural coloring or shape! If it continues to be a problem, maybe you could start a thread asking for suggestions. Maybe some stores envision their clothing as having a "softer look" and perhaps would deal more with the muted colors.

Tough one. The blouse is a bit overwhelming like this - have you tried it with a jacket or sweater on top to break up the pattern? It is a great looking top and I see why you were drawn to it!

Once again thanks for all the wonderful suggestions!

One of my favorite silhouettes is to wear a pencil skirt like this with a loose button free blouse tucked in. I went back and tried tucking the blouse in once again. I still was not completely convinced that the blouse worked for me. I then tried to change the necklace, oh, and I changed the camisole to a neutral tan color instead of grey. Yesterdays necklace had some navy blue in it and I love the combination of rust and navy. However, I put on a simple crystal necklace that fell above the neckline of the blouse. I thought that looked a bit better and it added some light to the top. Next I tried switching out the booties for a pair of black ones. I liked the suggestion of balancing the black in the top with some shoes. I thought that improved the look. I wanted to try the top with jeans, and black and rust pants. I did so and the result was similar.

Unfortunately, in every case, I felt like the look was wearing me, instead of me wearing the look. I definitely did not feel comfortable and agree that the look is too bright and bold. I bet that if I keep the blouse it will sit in my closet untouched with the tags attached.

With my coloring (I have been told -soft autumn) I should wear warm soft and muted colors and this blouse does not meet any of those criteria! I am having a hard time finding blouses like this. I default to Ivory. I really want something with more color or pattern, and without black if possible.

I am certain that I come across as bold to the people around me, but not because of wearing bright colors or patterns. It would be more my personality mixed with my unique fashion sense which definitely stands out in my community. One example would be in the work place where it seems that when everyone else is dressed informally, I am dressed up; when I am wearing jeans and a t shirt, everyone else is dressed more formally. I get away with this, but no one else can pull it off. I am always floating above and below the levels of informal and formal, but I never conform to the same level of the majority of my co-workers.

I most certainly have a long neck. I think my neck is perfectly wonderful as long as I remember to sit/stand up straight and don't hunch my shoulders and jut my neck out! ( Where is my mother?) However, I am very attracted to scarves and layered necklaces, boat necklines, and crew necklines, necklines with interesting collars and ruffles. I really don't like turtle necks or things that constrict my neck. However, I like a mock neck, that is what attracted me to the Charlotte Gainsbourg for Current Elliot blouse I purchased for fall this year. I knew this Tracy Reese Kurta Peasant blouse didn't have the ideal collar for me.

One of my current goals is to purchase only items that make me feel great, look great, and fit great. They need to meet the standard of being equal to the most excellent item in my closet in their category or they do not enter. (So if it is a patterned blouse, I have to love it as much as my favorite patterned blouse, etc.) In the case of this blouse, the verdict is that it will be returned. It does not meet my standard.

Wow--I can see why you're drawn to it. I love Tracy Reese items, too. And it looks made to go with the skirt.
I think the neckline is tough--maybe more so than the color--though you could work with it. Meaning, would you buy a similar top in a different color if you could ? I have the problem of being drawn like a magnet to color combo's without looking at the whole picture.
For fun, what would it look like if you wore glasses with slightly darker frames? Not that you have them, nor should wear black frames, but the disappearing frames/framless look really skew toward wanting much less color intensity in tops.

I think the color combination is great! However, i'd try to maybe substitute the skirt with pants (red or deep orange/rust colored pants if you have those) or if you stick to the skirt, keep the top tucked in. You definitely have the right figure to do so! You could even match the top with black slim pants for a more formal, evening look. Just as an additional tip, I think the outfit will look better without the neckpiece. Perhaps, you want earrings instead....

In case you need pants, you could look for great deals (variety of colors and styles and brands) at Twice!

It is a lovely top and skirt combo. Do you usually like bold and dramatic outfits? As this outfit is one of them, you need to assess how you feel in it. I can see Gigi's and Marley's point, but Angie has somewhat similar colouring to you and still rocks bold and dramatic outfits.

I agree with Gigi - I believe that the pattern is just too overwhelming for your coloring. To me, your hair, eyes, and skin just fade into the background. It is a lovely top and goes very well with the skirt, but I guess it all depends on how picky you want to be. I'm not sure where you are in your wardrobe building process, so maybe this top is good enough until you find the perfect one?

I'm also curious about how you feel about the neckline? I think that its really difficult for someone with a long neck to wear a neckline like this. To me, it emphasizes the length of the neck - which may or may not be something that you are striving for.

And - one last thing - if you decide to keep the top, I'd try it with a nude colored cami!

I guess I will be the spanner here...I really love the pairing, and the fit and silhouette are perfect, but I feel like the top is too intense for your natural coloring. When I look at the photo, I see the top rather than you wearing the top, if that makes any sense. I just think that the colors are overwhelming. Sorry!

Another to the list for thinking it's a great pairing. I'm wondering about tucking it though - as you mentioned - it would give you more solid skirt showing and less pattered top ....and you certainly are slim enough to pull that look off!

I think it looks great with the skirt too. Sometimes if I'm not sure about a the darkness of a top I will try it with darker footwear - seems to balance it somehow.

I found this blouse from Plenty by Tracy Reese and thought it would work with my rust colored No. 2 Pencil Skirt from J Crew. It's actually a perfect match in terms of the colors. It is soft and feels like silk even though it is rayon. I also like how it moves when I walk (something you can't see in a photograph). I am unsure of how it looks on me? Are the colors too dark? Too bright? I am wondering if I am being thrown off by the black in the pattern? I tried tucking it in to see if it had to do with proportion but don't think that is the issue. Should I keep it or return it? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!!
