I don't see soft. I see sharp. And dramatic as others have said. A little classic, but unmistakably modern. Definitely not boring.

I don't really think classic becomes boring without attention, because a classic look relies on well-designed pieces. But I do know what you mean, and I actually just found an old post of mine worrying that I was relying too much on basic, if high-quality, essentials (nice silk shirts, etc).

I'm actually having a bit of navel-gazing around this outfit and your previous one from when you bought the bag. It's making me imagine the parallel universe where I'd decided to go to prep school and learned to dress well like my childhood best friend. Or even if I'd paid more attention to style the summer I lived in France as a teen! Instead of a few decades of awkward gender-rebel nerd. (Which, to be fair, was very true to who I am, so I don't regret it.)

Edit: I just looked up my Kibbe type and I'm pretty sure I'm either dramatic, or flamboyant natural. Interesting stuff! I hadn't looked at it before.

I totally agree with Angie! I'm not huge at putting labels on oneself if it limits you, makes you doubt; however, I sense from even just this one photo you have a strong sense of self.

I don't think classic is boring at all. Think of all the classic beauties--essentially classic is very good design. Not keeping it current can get boring, but it doesn't seem as though that will be your dilemma.

I am not an expert on Kibbe. As I understand it a Classic does not look boring in classic styles. They look amazing.
I love what you are wearing. It really works for you. The look seems natural to who you are.
I have decided to make up my own styles because I can't see myself as a Natural. I don't have the bone structure. I borrow from Classic and Natural.

What Olen just said describes why it would work on me also.

A sheath dress could potentially work on most Kibbe types -- but each type would be better in a different sheath, with different details.

Gamines (and especially Flamboyant Gamines) tend more toward some asymmetry. But some features that work on Classics will also work on them, as Olen said.

La Ped said: "Your own features and demeanour pull this look together and make it seem just-right -- which is kind of the whole goal of Kibbe, finding the right frame for your portrait -- not that I'm an expert, but that's my interpretation."

Exactly!

I don't know how tall you are but I see a gamine, in Kibbe's terms. Your frame seems so narrow, to the point of being delicate. DC has a medium width bone structure, as I understand it. The outfit is classic in style, but it's a good one for a gamine too : structured, crisp, with details and horizontal lines.

Well I only have any idea what you're talking about because Style Fan suggested I might like to look into Kibbe types about 2 weeks ago! So I'm a total novice on it. I can't work my type out yet either. To me there is some drama in your look here, the boots, the scarf... But thinking that Classic is maybe boring or uptight is more of a feeling for you I think. So IDK.

Yes, Classic. The lines in this outfit are too crisp and symmetrical for Natural, Soft or otherwise. Natural, in Kibbe world, indicates some asymmetry, some organic non-linear elements, and some movement, either visual or tactile. I'm not getting any of that here. And honestly, I think Classic suits you better. Natural would feel busy and overdone. This feels very "natural" on you, but it is not a Kibbe Natural outfit. It's also not particularly Soft, in that it's not playing up your Yin/feminine aspects to a great degree. The long-over-lean combo of the sweaters and jeans could be Soft/Yin on its own, and the floral scarf as well. But the coat, the booties, and the bag, all add a structured, Yang element. Honestly, I'm so back and forth on whether you lean Soft Classic or Dramatic Classic that you may well be a true Classic. Your facial structure and frame have some angularity, but it's not pronounced to the point of being sharp. Also, I don't think Classic is boring at all! For the longest time, the fashion world was built around trying to create the illusion of classic proportions on everybody, so in that sense these are shapes that are very pervasive in modern fashion history, but they also happen to be the shapes that you wear well. Your own features and demeanour pull this look together and make it seem just-right -- which is kind of the whole goal of Kibbe, finding the right frame for your portrait -- not that I'm an expert, but that's my interpretation.

Out of all the style categories, classic is one that becomes easily boring without care.

Greyscale: you are TOO kind. Thank you.

Minimalist, it's funny that "classic" and "dramatic" were the first words that came to mind. If I don't overthink things, that is what comes to my mind too.

Suz, the trench is massimo dutti. I picked it up last year when they were doing a lot of ink blue. I'm so happy with the quality and price.
I think of gamines as people who can wear short hair really well, and you definitely do. I could also put you in classic, but I think of you as a mostly gamine dresser (although I think your best looks are sheath dresses--so I assume that's classic). I don't think I've ever seen you in a long, straight coat. That would be another classic look.

There is a tendency for those of us with a core classic style to worry that it is too boring. That might have been what I was getting at with my "statement" question. You've got a statement bag, scarf, shoe -- and a trench as beautiful as this one always makes a statement to me, also.

When a style works on a person, "boring" doesn't really enter into it. I guess that is a good lesson for me.

I'm not sure about labels but you look amazing. Chic, elevated, French, expensive, classy, put-together are words that come to mind. That is not an outfit a boring dresser would ever wear. All the little details are right without trying too hard (so in that sense I do think "natural" applies).

As a Kibbe -- dramatic classic is worth looking at, yes.

I thought for a while I fell into that category. I think I am closer to his flamboyant gamine. Hate the word flamboyant but really he is just talking about an extra dose of drama and less "sweet" than gamine might otherwise suggest.

I love the outfit! You look sensational. Gorgeous scarf and coat on you (what is the coat?) and love how the turn of the jeans echoes the sweater.

The sweater and scarf both look natural to me. The coat and jeans are both modern classic. The boots are a little harder.

If this feels like you, maybe you can think of it as a formula to keep your classics from feeling stodgy. Something soft, something edgy, all wrapped up in classic lines.

xpost with Tulle

Hi Smittie --

I've not dug too deeply into Kibbe theory (but really only looked at photos/text from his book plus his FB account, which might be best as he says most of the current interpretations of his work are off-base) but I don't see much soft here.

I echo Meredith's take above.

For me, the sharp lines of the jacket, boots, bag, and jeans and the "hard" vs "soft" texture on both the bag and boots move you more toward his classic. One sweater can't do all the work.

Know he has a Dramatic Classic" category and without recalling details that's my read -- the boots and way you're wearing the scarf and the COMBO of all dark + the vivid floral = drama.

Also IIRC Kibbe's all about bone structure. I did read up on the Natural as my face/hands/feet/legs fall into his parameters. You are so angular/dramatic with your face and limbs that again DC seems probable.

Whatever it is, it's a great look for you!

Dramatic Classic (and I believe that's your type, Smittie) in a casual vein. Great look, perfect on you.

Ah, ok. I really don't see anything soft or natural here. I suppose the sweater and scarf might read as soft if you wore them alone, but I think the jacket and bag are such strong statements they take the look straight into classic territory. It's okay to be classic. Come to the dark side.

Meredith and Jaileen: I am hoping you can just go by your instincts on whether this is "classic" or "soft natural".

Is the look "soft" or "natural" or "classic"?

It looks like classic is winning!

I love the outfit. I would not call this soft natural. It is more of a modern classic to me (that's not an 'official' category, just my 2 cents).

I don't know anything about those descriptions, but you look fab! I'm also jealous because it was 88 here yesterday.
