Shannon - MaryK has a good point! My parents got rid of both of their kids and now they each have an extra bedroom; my dad put in a pool table, and my mom put in a walk in closet for all her work clothes ... how old are your kids?

Great replies ladies!

It sounds like we would all like a bit more room for shoes and bags, which take up significantly more space due to size and shape.

We'd all like to be able to see our wardrobe at a glance - at least all together in one place.

Maybe having a closet of a certain size keeps us from hoarding and hanging on to the "almost works" items?

MaryK - I'd kill to have our closet/dressing room (well, maybe "kill" is a little strong, but you get the idea...)

lyn - yes, an Ikea opened on Kenaston November 28th. You'd think royalty had arrived with all the fuss that was made.

I think it does a bit to me. If it looks like my drawers are getting too hard to close, then I know it is time to purge.
I am much stricter with DH who is more inclined to hoard. I try to get him to do one- in- one out!

Actually, yes, size matters to me --- where the wardrobe is concerned. I do currently have my stuff scattered across rooms in our three-bedroom house, and it's driving me batty! Definitely, the aim is to have them all corralled into the one room, if not the one closet.

I dislike having to go fetch shoes from one room, wellies and raincoat from another etc --- and even if that could be sorted with near-the-door storage, I truly hate having to search for scarves in a different room from tops, say.

Mostly, for me, it has to do with a certain level of laziness. I find it easier to cook if my cookbooks and oven and fridge and sink are within steps of each other, in the same room (it's oddly common in India for the fridge to take up residence in the dining or living room instead of the kitchen). I find it easier to work with phone in arm's reach of computer, paper and pen to hand, and the scanner and printer in the same room (my workplace requires traversing two rooms to get to the printer). I'd prefer the drying rack and clothes line to be on the same floor as the washing machine. I want my toiletries and cosmetics in ONE place --- either bathroom or dressing table, not distributed across both (two exceptions for lip balm and foot cream by bedside).

So also with clothes. I do HAVE the space to spread out. I just hate it enough to keep pruning until I can stuff it into the one closet space and at most an additional dresser and one shoe rack.

ETA: I should add that I didn't actually let me wardrobe *expand* across rooms. Rather, my partner and I shared a walk-in closet in an earlier apartment and then moved to a place without closets or built-in wardrobes, so everything had to be distributed into armoires and dressers and hanging racks and chests spread all over.

I find I'm too lazy to actually wear much of the stuff not in the bedroom! So yes, what Shannon and IK say about seeing it all better---and at a glance!---definitely applies.

No. I know this because I have had larger closets on our various FL moves and not expanded to fit them. I have a 4' closet with shoes stacked under and jeans up top on the shelf. I put jackets and coats in the spare room closet I share with the BF, along with gloves, scarves, belts, hats, etc. I do have a dresser for undies, loungewear, sweaters, and the like.
I am totally happy with my 125 or so piece wardrobe

I have half of a six foot regular closet, plus some shelf/ dresser space -- not a lot of that. And a shoe rack. And it feels about right. I do switch out my summer and winter clothes. What's out of season gets stored in a large hall closet (thank heaven for that closet - we keep EVERYTHING in there....). And in-season coats go in the hallway, near the door.

Would I expand if I had a larger closet? I don't think so - not by much, anyway. My natural tendency seems to be towards a relatively streamlined but not truly minimalist closet. I don't like to have things I'm not actually wearing around. In fact, if I haven't worn an item (other than special occasion items) within a few weeks, I start giving it the poison eye, like a landlord looking for reasons to evict...I sometimes have to talk myself OUT of purging perfectly good articles of clothing that simply aren't weather -appropriate. (E.g. during a warmer winter, wanting to toss all my sweaters all of a sudden!)

Shannon, do you think you could use an Ikea wardrobe or some such to add a bit of breathing room to your closet? If you could rearrange your furniture, you might find it a real help!

I don't actually have a real dresser; what I have is a sort of antique cupboard that I have fitted with baskets to serve as drawers. It looks nice in the room and is more practical than I had expected. Then I got some Ikea clothing boxes to keep things neat on my closet shelves....not that any of this works perfectly.

I turned my son's room into a guest room/dressing room complete with two custom-fitted closets just for me. It took less than a year for my wardrobe to expand so much that both of those closets are now uncomfortably full! So yes, my wardrobe does seem to expand to fill the space available.

I am trying to reverse that trend in 2013.

My wardrobe has expanded to fit the size of our walk-in closet--and DH is just as bad about his half of it. I also have my out-of-season clothes taking up half the guest room closet. Heavier coats and jackets in the hall coat closet. I also have clothes that don't fit stashed away in the laundry room cupboards--just in case I gain the weight back. I know I shouldn't do that, but I have pulled things out to take on long trips so that I will have something comfortable to wear the last few days.

In the last few weeks I have been weeding out and donating--and I like the new uncrowded look of my reduced closet load. One problem I have is that with more room, I am more likely to keep older marginal items--again "just in case."

I am already using 2 closets, spare room and my own, split by work clothes and 'casual' clothes. DH has one, all clothes, all seasons. I also switch out seasons. I think I would be more creative and shop better if I only had one. (But I don't want to, lol)

@Nicole, I always tease my 12 year old son I am taking over his room as a dressing room when he goes to university. And I'm only half kidding

Nope. As it is, I only use a small fraction of our walk-in closet.

Yes. I have half of a standard 6 foot closet. That has seriously limited my wardrobe, and it forces me to switch my summer and winter clothes in and out.

However, it also makes me aware of all of the pieces I have. It has also made me think harder about how hard pieces need to work for me.

I honestly didn't shop more than twice a year for years because I was always going to "lose more weight". I have decided to dress who I am today, so I have a bit of catching up to do despite my small wardrobe.
