Hmmm, Vix, when I used to wear hose I always wore Silk Reflections. I am glad to know that they still are around and last. I also get eczema, but have it all year round. My hands crack and bleed, especially in the summer, and it looks like I have leperosy. The onlt stuff that works for me it from the dematologist.

I actually do wear hose a fair bit as I like their warmth under pants in the winter. I find DKNY and Hanes Silk Reflections last better than Calvin Klein or Nordstrom's house brand.

Diana, that's exactly the one that I use too. My aunt gave me a tube of L'Occitane in college and I have never looked back since. Their shea butter in a tin is also great for chapped lips and cracked fingers - and in a pinch, I've even used it as makeshift hair wax for taming flyaways on the go.

Hmm, interesting. It sounds like sheer hose is going to be delicate by nature no matter what although the fancier ones are nicer in terms of fit and feel, but that the more expensive thicker hose and tights are better. I do tend to stay away from really cheap tights and leggings. I think I might invest in some Commando TIGHTS, but I think I'll stick with my cheapo sheer hose for now. I am not concerned with things like elastic longevity with regards to the sheer hose because I literally get runs in them the first time I wear them.

Kari and Zap, this is my most favorite hand cream of all time for winter eczema:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/lo.....am/2885807

I also use Eucerin (or Eucerin Aquaphor) when it gets really bad.

I honestly don't think so. Granted i've never worn Wolford but a lot of times the tights i've bought from Target or Kohls last just as long (or longer) than the more expensive brands i've purchased (DKNY, Betsey Johnson etc.).

My experience has been that the more expensive brands fit and keep their shape better. The cheap brands get baggy in the knees and the elastic gives out quickly so that I'm ready to toss them long before they get a run. I imagine the more expensive ones would look finer and less shiny too.
You might try picking up a pair of the ones you are interested in at The Rack to try. I've seen Commando there as well as Spanx

Kari, I know I am just careless sometimes and just go for it knowing my hands are chapped. I was doing really well but I have gotten reckless with applying my creams. I have to get back to it.

I've never sprung for Wolford and the like, but moderate priced hose seem to be cut and made better in the panty area and sometimes in the toe area as well. The super cheap stuff is sheer all the way up, has no separate piece at the crotch, and has elastic at the top or something that doesn't hold its shape. More expensive, super sheer hose is shaped in the leg and foot. When I wore pantyhose regularly, the navy blue ones seemed to reach for anything velcro; somehow the black ones resisted and lasted longer. No clue why. Hose kept for a r-e-a-l-l-y long time (e.g. a decade or more) sort of dissolves and crumbles at the waist. Which I guess goes to show how rarely I wear hose and how I made the mistake of stocking up way back when. . .

I can't speak to the longevity of control top hose since I avoid it like the plague, but in the past I found that department store quality hose looked nicer and lasted longer than the cheapo weepo stuff. I never kept track of the cost per wear, however, to see if twice or thrice as much lasted twice or thrice as long.

Ouch, Zapotee, I struggle with winter eczema too (though fortunately not so far this year.) I also fight chapped and rough heels. I often end up smearing my hands and feet with shea butter lotion or Cetaphil 5 minutes before I put on my tights.

I like fancy pantyhose too. I have gotten runs on some of them but it has more to do with the fact that my hands get winter ezcema. I have to be careful when my hands are not completely soft. I have Kate Spade hose that has lasted me forever. They also feel different and are much more warm.

OK, I don't wear sheer pantyhose like you would find in a drug store, but as you probably know I love my patterned and opaque hose. I've become a BIG fan of Commando over the past year and a half. I still have some of the same polka-dotted and solid black tights that I bought in September 2011 that don't have runs yet! (I've had two pairs that DID get runs on the first wear which made me think that there was a defect as I'd never had that happen before; Nordstrom gave me a new pair, no questions asked.) They seem to be made of a sturdier, stretchier material that can actually let you MOVE without being afraid of getting a run.

Maybe. To me it depends more on the heaviness of the fabric. SHeer hose by almost anyone seem to run like crazy for me. But Philippe Matignon makes an amazing trouser sock that lasts and lasts, I haven't tried his hose (they are about $30 CDN per pair).

So I rarely wear hose, only for winter dressy events (otherwise I wear tights, which are a lot more durable). Most of the time, I just go to the drugstore and buy cheapo nude or black plain sheer hose, which looks perfectly fine and fits comfortably. I am unwilling to spend a lot on hose because for me they seem to be basically disposable. I think their half life in my hands is like 4 hours. Sometimes I run them while putting them on, and I almost always discover runs when I take them off at the end of the evening.

Occasionally I'll buy mid-price hose at discount prices, like from TJ Maxx or the like. I'm talking mid-price department store brands like CK or DKNY, that type of thing. I haven't noticed them being terribly more durable, although they do come in more colors and patterns.

I've never tried the really expensive brands like Wolford or Commando, since I'm not willing to pay so much unless I have some guarantee that they will last more than one wear. They are pretty though!

So what do you guys think? Are the more expensive brands of hose less likely to run, or are we basically paying for design, style, etc, but not durability when we buy these? Please note, I'm only talking about sheer hose here, not things like fishnets or opaque tights that would be more durable anyway.
