My local department store is "Herberger's" which is part of a chain that includes Younkers and Boston I believe.

I shop shoes and the makeup/fragrance and housewares departments. The clothes are usually not the best designs, or are highly patterned with flowers and hideous prints...I don't see ladies wearing these clothes so why do they keep stocking them???

Thank goodness for the internet!! And I have a city close enough to my sales territory that I can drive the extra miles and go to Macy's (where they stock Eileen Fisher). I have developed a nice relationship with the lady who is in charge of this department and she phones me whenever items I like are going to go on sale. She will put items to the side for me.

I have noticed this recently. Some stores are now stocking up on what was 'new' 3 or 4 years ago.
Lands End, Talbots and related seem to always sell the same kind of items, some of them not necessarily current.

I dont think so, it could be stale inventory possibly trying to be re-introduced after people have forgotten of the items. The art and mystery of retail is really interesting and incredibly profitable and most all us buy into it.

I absolutely agree that new does NOT necessarily equal current or on-trend. Many retailers cater toward a different clientele and stock items that are either classic or even staid.

Well, if I adopt at all, I usually adopt late. I don't like the frumpy stuff I see at the local mall, though, and neither do my DDs. If it weren't for the Internet, I don't know where I'd find clothes, shoes and accessories. I'm fighting the frump with all my might and agree with Beth Ann about not wanting to exceed the "best by" date.

Not in my area! I've had a 6 week search for a replacement for my white jeans! Everything was either skinny or old-style capri. It's even tougher since I'm shopping for a 14.

I don't always care about being fashion forward, but I don't want to buy something that's almost past its "best by" date! I take a three-prong approach:

1. Tune my eye to newer style through Angie's guidance, along with occasionally perusing fashion sources like "In Style" and other blogs.

2. Window shop better stores (Nordies, for example) looking for new items that fit with my style and wardrobe.

3. Take what I learned in #1 and #2 into local stores or sites that fit my budget.

Finally, I found another pair of white jeans, although they aren't full length, in SteinMart. I don't think you have these in CA, but think of Chicos and TJ Maxx having a baby ----- one must keep a check on the "bling-o-meter" when shopping there! I was glad to have updated my "eye" for denim silhouettes before shopping!

Interesting! I find some popular retailers here sell very similar pieces year after year, some change up every couple of months it seems.

My favourite retailers have a clear vision of their customer and evolve from year to year but don't totally flip. I can think of two local retailers doing this brilliantly-interesting knitwear, modern loose dresses, great print tops, a variety of different pants fits in black. The stuff that sells.

Nodding to Angie's comment. New does not equal current. New equals sufficient demand to stock. Retailers will often stock an item long after it is dead trend-wise to satisfy late adopters and replacement buyers. Zombie fashion. (So says she who always buys pencil skirts whether on trend or not.....)

No. I see things new things being sold at department stores that my grandmother would think are too old. This is especially true in America where people do the bulk of their shopping in department stores. In Europe I find most boutiques to sell only current trends.

Even current, trendy things can still look dated on the wrong person! I'm thinking about my last excursion to Zara, where I tried on a lovely tweed 3/4 length jacket in blue/white. It had a very dated/matronly look on me even though tweed is super trendy and even though the jacket was really quite nice.

Just because it is new does not mean it is "trend". But what is trending is also questionable. It depends upon what bloggers you are looking at.

So many on here say they do not care about current trends. Everyone does seem concerned about something looking dated..then there are timeless and classic..all can be confusing.

Agreeing with what everyone else is saying -- not everything "new" is necessarily "current". This is especially true where I live. The "brick & mortars" sell what works for my area -- a New England college town that is inhabited by mainly working class folks (outside of the academic community). This town is sweet and lovely, but not a fashion mecca. If I want something "current", I need to shop online or travel a bit outside my area.

Thank you for starting this thread, Shannon. I've noticed that Angie's trends noted on her blog posts can take a year or even two before I see them worn locally. Anything trendy in Europe or Tokyo will take 2-4 years to surface. With YLF I feel ahead of the game and can get a lower CPW by adopting early rather than when most do here.
I suspect that retail chains send the trends that are not selling on the coasts to us in the Heartland were eyes are just getting adjusted to them.

Great info from everyone. I think it also depends on your location...oh yeah Angie already said this ... I expect NYC or Chicago stores will carry more "current" items than for example midwestern cities or Boston. (just guessing where the most fashion-forward places are in the US) And if you are in the burbs it's another step away from the big cities...because it's all about what will sell to the local customers. Shopping online gets you around this.

I agree with all of the above. I look to Zara and HM for trends, but occasionally Angthropologie for a more feminine arty bohemian look.

Macys, GAP, BR are for basic items which are new but not really trendy. In other words, you can always expect to find the same look.

I've been trolling around brick and mortar stores here and there lately and have seen some things that I would not consider fashionable and wondered why that was.

It's a good question, and I think my experience is no, it depends on the store.

I'm still getting a sense of what is current and it's been a learning process for sure from when I started YLF. More high end department stores (Nordstrom) might be more current than Macy's, Sears, etc. in the brick and mortar stores. But in general I've found bigger department stores have plenty of not-trendy or trendy in the past offerings as well as currently trendy ones. It's part of offering a wide selection and catering to all ages. Same with off-price retailers. I also think the smaller the clothing section in brick and mortar the more likely it is to be current -- Target is usually more current to my eye than Sears for example. Also I think there is more that is not current available online for department stores, again because of the larger selection.

H&M and Forever21 tend to be much more trend focused, on all the trends, and current in that way. The trade off can be much less in the way of classics, but it's a safe bet that something I see there is current in shape, color, and pattern -- if I do my own filter for if it would match the age/style/personality of the wearer.

I rarely shop at Banana Republic, Gap, Loft and retailers with a small seasonal selection and a pretty defined look, but I'd imagine they would tend to be mostly current (with classics) because of the smaller retail space and seasonal turn over.

ETA: I see I cross-posted, I agree with the above.

Depends on the retail store, though, doesn't it? I mean, some brands have built their image around classic/traditional looks. Lands End, LL Bean, and Eddie Bauer come to mind. Chicos and Talbots may fall into this category too. It's often years, or at least multiple seasons, before "current" looks trickle down to this type of retailer -- though it seems to happen more rapidly now than it used to, thanks to companies like Zara and H&M broadening their appeal to a wider range of age demographics and others trying to keep up...

No. New does not necessarily equal current.

Fashion buyers are responsible for the assortment in stores. They are motivated by what will sell (or what customers will purchase) - because retail needs to make a profit (and buyers are assessed by how well their departments perform). Fashion buyers will absolutely put stuff into stores that is less current and fashionable, if they think it will sell. These decisions are very much driven by the retailers target markets - which differ greatly per store and per location.

Fashion buyers concentrate on current items and newness - but only up to a point (retailers like Zara aside because EVERYTHING at Zara is current or fashion forward - they are an anomaly with a very, very unique yet large target market).

No advice but watching with interest.

I suspect "it depends".
I have noted that for me, some brands/retailers are not too fashionable even in their current lines, in the sense that it would be harder for me to put modern, fashionable outfits together using their items, though of course almost anything can be worn in the right way.

Also, I am really bad at second-hand items, in terms of knowing which "old" items are un-datable and indistinguishable from a new item, or are perfectly retro-mod, vs. bombing out with just plain old stuff.

Does a new item in a retail store automatically mean it's current/fashionable? For example, new spring items are streaming into stores these days - being new arrivals, are they always current? Or can you have new items coming in that are not necessarily fashionable?
