I found a nice slip at Gap after much fruitless searching. It's nylon and has a nice drape to it.

I had bought a very bodycon dress from Victoria's Secret and needed a slip. I tried Nordie's, but all they had that would fit me was a horrendously expensive slip that wasn't that great (i.e., it was still made of nylon and not silk or something), or else a slip that was shapewear. The SA told me that the shapewear ran small. Holy cow, I could hardly get it on, and I am tiny! I don't know how a person could breathe in that. And I even found that it didn't look good under the dress, because all the parts I wanted to be "skimmed" over (my protruding hip bones, for ex.) were just as prominent as before. The slip from Gap did indeed "skim over" everything and made me look great.

I am wearing a full slip today. I stocked up before I left London, but they are not hard to find in New Zealand. I like them because I find that they help clothes sit better and eliminate any chance of static. None of the ones I have are shapewear.

I also love the feeling of silk!

I agree about Winter Silks and Anthropologie. However, the reason good slips are so hard to find is because so few people wear them now. Even with many bloggers, they display photos where one can see the outline of their body through the dress, like that is somehow a good thing.

Regarding Linda's comments, though, support garments aren't anything new, nor would they be available if they weren't in demand. I see no "trend" mainly because they have always been popular. There were paneled girdles in my grandmother's and mother's time, and women often wore corsets prior to that. The desire to make one's shape closer to the "ideal" has always been around, and there have always been various types of support garments to help women achieve it. Again, if no one bought it, they wouldn't have entire sections of them in stores.

I do agree with you about keeping healthy, but I have loose skin after pregnancy, and all the running and sit-ups in the world aren't going to make that go away. A friend of mine is a size 2 with a "crepe paper" tummy (bumpy). Wearing something to make sure it stays smooth under dresses isn't giving up; it is simply reality that I will always have some bumpy skin on my tummy. I suppose I could embrace it and be bumpy in my dresses, but I choose to smooth it out instead.

WinterSilks carries them - and in Silk. I bought pettipants from them that I love. Amazon and Nordies also carry them.

I prefer pettipants (slips in shorts form). I bought mine from Amazon.

I hadn't though of Etsy, but I would check there too.

Oh, seriously, I know! All the slips in the stores are shapewear - squeezy. I came across some the other day - at a TJ Maxx or something, but they were all size 22 and up. I think they can only be had online these days. I am hording slips from the olden days, some of which were my mother's. They're like 50 years old, lol.

I so agree with you, Linda. And the whole other thing--that not only should we give up on taking care of our bodies, it's the usual insinuation that we're not good enough as we are and must change our physical selves to please some arbitrary group of phantom viewers who will judge us if our genes don't conform to some ideal. What complete idiocy.

PS, BTW, when I was still wearing hose in professional situations, I found that hose marked as support was not only more comfortable than any control top type (which was tight at the waist and loose in the legs) it felt more like tights and lasted FAR longer than "regular" hose (bonus).

The reason I discovered this, really, is because as a petite, I had a terrible time with bagging and sagging of regular hose. The support styles had enough elastic strength to be workable.

I wear a lot more jeans and pants these days than when I worked. But I still have and use slips. I was surprised at how hard it was to find any, when I looked around a month or so ago. (I did see a few VS things that could serve as slips -- called "chemises" by VS, but it is pretty much the same garment). I am tempted to snap them up when I see them, based on how oddly utilitarian so many of the "slips" are around today though!

I want to rant a bit that I absolutely detest the trend toward "control top" this and "shaping" that. I know my figure is not what it was in youth. However, I have always hated how control top pantyhose felt. And I'm not at all convinced that a "shaping slip" serves the purpose that a conventional satin or nylon slip would. In addition, wearing "shaping" things says to me, that one has given up on actually striving to BE in shape; also that one's present shape is hopeless. Neither is the case for me, and I suspect, isn't for most women. And if all we do is push the fat tissue around, really it just means there are bumps or lumps in even odder, less appealing areas!

Here's to bicep curls and lat pulldowns and vigorous walks! And slips!

I think the best alternative is to make them or have them made. There are plenty of lovely vintage patterns for them in vintage pattern stores like http://www.lanetzliving.net/ and on eBay. You can make them in silk or your preferred fiber, with as many (or few) lace insertions and trims as you like, and various lengths to suit your clothes.

For plain, utilitarian ones I buy cheap nylon slips and pettipants from Target or Amazon.

For pretty ones, try:
Anthropologie
Modcloth

You can also generally find them at lingerie sites. I know Figleaves carries a bunch, and VS actually has a bunch although I think the online selection is better than in the store.

(For the record, I like silky slips. I mostly avoid the tight, shaping Spanx-type ones, but if that's what you're looking for, most dept. stores have a good selection.)

Department stores or Target (is Target a department store now? It has departments...) would be my first bet. I've got a few slips and half slips, most are the usual nylon, that I wear sometimes. For silk and fancier stuff I'd look at nice lingerie sources or places that cater to vintage enthusiasts.

Vermont Country Store definitely still has a paper catalog - they sent me one this Christmas. It's a riot to read. They're got a pretty decent website too, iirc. Lehman's is also a good catalog/website for "I wonder if they still make that" stuff, including clothes - my parents visited their store in Ohio Amish country last year, said it was such fun to browse.

I definitely wear them and was disappointed that they were so hard to find when I went to replace some a few years ago. The market has turned toward more-expensive "shapers" I think. But I did find some traditional "Vanity Fair" brand ones at Kohl's, I think it was...

Yes, a full slip under my sweater dress. Well, technically it's a chemise. (Potato, potahto?) It's washable silk, and makes me want to raid bf's linings stash and learn to sew and wear slinky slips under everything. Including the slip-shorts Suz mentioned, under baggy chinos, maybe even painters pants. So maybe don't try silk after all. ;-)

Commando's weighted hem intrigues me.

Attractive camisoles are another item not always easy to find in big sizes.

Thanks kkards for the Vt Country Stores reference, haven't seen them since my high-school exchange year. Host mother's lounge capsule was mostly plaid flannel nightgowns from there. Wonder if they still have the paper catalog?
