I really enjoyed reading all your responses. I think something Runcarla said, that she enjoy the ritual, might also be part of my personal thing for toner. A lot of people made good points, like "toner" can actually mean many different things depending on the product. It could be clarifying, moisturizing, or exfoliating for example. I also agree with Krish that a serum can be really helpful, at least for me, even though it is allegedly also not necessary and can't replace a moisturizer. At so me stage of life I found my moisturizing serum to be sufficient in summer. I guess I am interested in the official reasons for why things do or don't work versus our personal experiences of what works for our skin. You can't argue with happy clear skin.

No, partly because I’m highly suspicious of the efficacy of skincare products and partly because I don’t like to spend the money. I use a soap free wash (one of the brands thAt elderly/hospital patients use for its gentleness), then slather on Sorbolene cream. This routine has given me best results, moreso than Clinique, body shop, and others. I could be persuaded to try rosehip oil though. It sounds romantic :).

I always used a good cleanser and toner, for many, many years. As I got past 60, though, I experimented with a new routine. Eye makeup remover only -- and then regular water on a cotton pad to cleanse my skin, and it has worked beautifully. Followed, of course, by a nice moisturizer (with sunscreen during the day).

I have a book of organic body-care recipes, and the author (Stephanie Tourles) differentiates between toners and astringents: "Astringents and toners are water-based agents used to remove cleanser residue, balance pH level, and hydrate the skin and are also effective at removing excess perspiration and oil. Astringents tend to be stronger than toners and are usually used on oily, combination, and normal skin types."

I use what the author would consider a toner, since it is not a strong concoction and is designed more to moisturize than to remove residue. I often make my own from one of her recipes (basically an herbal tea, sometimes with essential oils added), or I will use a hydrosol or the Caudalie grape water in the spray can.

I have been spraying the toner on my face, but reading your post makes me think maybe I should try putting it on a cotton ball. The extra exfoliation would be a nice benefit.

I used to use the oil cleansing method to clean my skin at night, and when I did that, I used a strong astringent to wipe all traces of the oil off my skin. So I think it really depends on your skin type. If the toner feels like it is doing good things for your skin, I would definitely continue with it.

I use something that looks and goes on like toner but is actually an exfoliant, by Paula's Choice. I don't think I'd use a toner that's just a toner, but I think the trend, as stated above, is for them to do other things now.

Does micellar water count? It's a terrific (and not too expensive) toner AND makeup remover. In fact, I use tap water as little as possible on my sensitive face, and it has been a solution for me. I use the water with those little oval or square shape flat cotton pads they sell, and I find these are more of an expense than the water itself, but at least that way I feel I am not wasting as much water.

I also use a serum, something I hate spending for but am so glad to have. Some of them (lotion-like types) provide enough moisturization, so I can skip the moisturizing cream. Serums are more efficient for me.

Recently I have discovered something that revolutionized my skin care regimen. I tend to have a dry face and would spend a lot of time and effort slapping on many different products in an attempt to drench it enough so that makeup wouldn't flake. But now I use a primer, more specifically La Base from Lancôme, and it took care of my makeup issues.

I always use toner because I like the feel of it and think that it removes all traces of my cleanser and make up. I enjoy skin care and make-up, so for me, it is not a chore, and a little luxury that I enjoy. I don't use expensive toners as my dermatologist told me that the basic cleansers and toners do the same job as the more expensive ones. His recommendation on anti-age cream was to use sunscreen and an emollient moisturiser.

I restarted with an extremely gentle toner after a long hiatus. Instead of cotton balls, I use beauty gauze pads, which don’t absorb as much liquid. Press the toner onto the face, rather than wiping it.

There is something that appeals to me about a ritual of skin care steps: the Noxema routine in my teens to early twenties, then as a young professional I could afford the Clinique 3 step routine. As a 30-40 year mother of young'uns I usually fell into bed, too tired to do anything but remove what little make-up I wore (with baby oil) and wash with a wet cloth. In the past 15 years I've experimented with cheap and expensive versions of skin care. I'm currently coming to the end of a very nice, but somewhat spendy 3 step (wash, serum, lotion) program. When it is gone, I'm going back to Cereve. I have a bit of the lotion that I use occaisionally and my skin seems to look it's best with this line. It is just a 2 step cleanser and lotion routine.

I think that, these days, different brands have made product names practically interchangeable - what one brand sells as a 'toner' is actually a cleanser, whereas the other brand will sell it as a lighter moisturiser or anti-ageing cream. Hence why @Katerina finds them moisturising but @La Pedestrienne finds them astringent. So my answer will really depend on the 'type' of toner you're using (ie - its intended purpose).

Firstly, toner does restore the pH of skin but this isn't really necessary, since your skin will automatically restore it itself after some minutes. But I guess if you don't have that long to wait, it could be useful.

As for moisturising properties, why not just use a moisturiser for that? Though I suppose milder humectants would be useful if you have oily skin & can't take a heavy moisturiser.

So all in all no, I don't use a toner lol. But I do sometimes use the Body Shop's Vitamin E Facial Mist after cleansing (or when I want to set makeup).

http://www.beautifulwithbrains.....ly-necessa

I lost interest when it's usefulness became questionable and Jules's explanation from her esthetician seems completely credible.

I've been trying to reduce the number of things in my house in every category while also adding only the least plastic packaging so it's unlikely I'll be adding toner. I considered a home made diluted apple cider vinegar formula but I'd rather go without than wonder if my face has a funny smell. I use it to rinse my hair but it gets rinsed out.

I don't use toner. I did in my thirties but I changed my skincare routine. I think it would depend on the kind of skin you have. I watch Angie of Hot and Flashy on YouTube. She does a lot of research on skin care and she is about my age. She uses witch hazel for a toner. Her skin is not nearly as sensitive as mine.

A facial esthestician recently told me that today’s gentler cleansers don’t really require toner to restore pH, so it’s more about another way to ‘put stuff in the skin’. I actually loved using the rosehip-based toner she sold me as part of a 4 step routine in sample sizes but I can’t quite justify buying full size when I have trouble believing it’s doing anything different than serum and moisturizer.

I bought a can of spray of Eau Thermal water last year. It is fab! It serves for me as a toner, and also as a freshen up. It seemed ridiculous to me at the time, but it has been super and long lasting. But, hey it is just canned water!

I rather like toner - but not right after washing my face. I feel that’s stripping for my skin - it has become very dry. But I like it by itself to sort of freshen up.

I stopped using toners -- too astringent, even the alcohol-free ones -- and switched to misting with a hydrosol immediately after showering or washing my face. Much better results for me (I have sensitive, dry skin).

I use toner. Not always, sometimes I run out and don’t replace right away, but most of the time. Find it pleasant after cleansing my face before using moisturizer. I have no idea, if it works in a long run, but it feels like my skin gets extra moisture boost and feels fresher momentarily. I use inexpensive toners - I think they work as well as the pricey stuff.
