Late to reply but we have a combination air fryer/grill - purchased from Costco. I like the air fry option for salmon especially. We use the grill option for chicken breasts. We like it because it takes less time to preheat than the oven. We use it almost exclusively - the only thing I really use the oven for is baking. (Our appliances are old.)

He is just cooking for himself- and he's retired with only a couple hobbies, so he has plenty of time on his hands!

I ordered a Ninja one that has a basket that you can cook 2 seperate things in- or have just 1 big drawer. That seemed the most useful, plus was only $100 on the black friday sale- so worth a try.

Suntiger, I'm with Unfrumped. I don't think it is worth it. Mine is a mini, so that's a factor, but I feel like I'd need a big one to even do meal size anything for two people. Add in that I don't see significantly better results from it vs oven, I am still not a fan. I'd send this one back if I had been more on top of things to figure this out within the return window.

On the other hand, maybe your dad is cooking for one? Maybe he'd like the place a few things in the drawer and turn it on method of cooking? If so, maybe. Other people seem to like theirs.

We had one and used it a fair amount before I dropped the insert thing on the floor, which dented it into non- functioning.

I don’t recall what the size category was but it wasn’t large - medium, small? Not super small.

We used it mostly for veggies- acorn squash slices, eggplant, broccoli or Brussels sprouts, that kind of thing. Some frozen sweet potato fries.

I know I liked it at the time for being able to not heat up oven, runs on a timer so can check & add more time. But, it really didn’t hold the amount of veggies we can consume at supper, & I didn’t feel it was so great if I had to do 2 batches. It came with a small grill insert to keep things higher, more are circulating, & I used a few times for some chicken parts or something.

I considered replacing it but it seems I would need a big one , then still wouldn’t use every day. I downsized house yet actually have a bit more useful storage in or near kitchen yet still not motivated, now 2+ years after losing it. Despite having to heat up oven I can do bigger batches or different timings of things on more than one pan, or a “ sheet pan” recipe, or most nights I do stovetop sauté of foods even veggies ( or eat raw) so I doubt I’ll get another.

I'm considering buying one for my dad. He had mentioned it, but I don't know anything about them. What's the advantage over just baking the things or frying with normal cooking spray?
The other possibility would be a fitbit, cause he was considering an Apple watch. Not sure he'd use enough to justify paying Apple prices though...

Peri, I do think the issues you've named are due to small size and no temperature control. With air frying, spreading out and controlling temp are both key.

Still, it's hard to get motivated to invest in a "larger and fancier" version of something you haven't had great experiences with.

Okay, report...still not sold on the whole thing. It took longer than stove top, probably because it's a mini and I had to do it in two batches. And, I didn't know if it was burning so I kept stopping it every few minutes to check. Also, not as crispy because I didn't know if I could dust it with cornstarch like on the stove or if that would cause problems. But on the upside, at least no oil splatters on the stove. And it was better than the sweet potatoes.

Thanks April, I will try it tonight and report back! Mine is the basket type but it's also a mini so that might be limiting since you are supposed to spread things out. And it doesn't have a temperature control, it's either off or on and supposedly 390. Sounds close enough to 400 to me!

Peri, do you have a basket style fryer?

This worked best in our basket style because in the tray style the oil drips onto the heating element.

Anyway, this is absolutely the lazy person's way to do it. I press the tofu, cut it into blocks about 2 inches long, one inch high and wide. Toss the blocks in a big bowl with non-extra-virgin olive oil glugged over top. When they're coated, preheat your fryer to 400 and cook the tofu for 10 minutes.

While the tofu is frying, I pour some reduced-sodium soy sauce into whatever oil remained in the bowl (it shouldn't be a ton). Tofu comes out of the fryer, goes back into the bowl; toss around to coat. I just leave it in the bowl to absorb the "sauce" until we're ready to eat.

Love our air fryer and use it all the time - it's especially fab in the summer when I don't want the oven heating the house up!

I do find you need to be fairly generous with oil ... also certain items (e.g. roasted broccoli I find burn a little faster than I would have thought, and a tablespoon or two in the bottom does a lot to keep the air more moist. Disappointing about that recipe but I would say don't give up yet

April, if you see this could you tell me your method for the crispy tofu? I've been making that on the stove top and the oil sizzles make a mess so that was one thing I really wanted to try in the air fryer. Not sure I trust the website recipes anymore though! I'll try your method and see if it can redeem the thing.

We loved our basket-style airfryer so much that we sprang for a massive Breville toaster oven/air fryler that is more of the tray kind. Mixed feelings on whether this was wise.

I would say don't give up. Once you figure out your particular oven and how to deal with it, it often becomes a game changer. I use ours for crispy fried tofy, vegetables, frozen things in batter that Mr. A enjoys. We also use it constantly for recrisping things that have gone soggy overnight.

For example, last night I made Mr. A Cornflake Crusted Chicken Breasts. By lunchtime today, they will have lost all their crunch - air fryer to the rescue.

Epic air-fryer disaster for me: hard-boiled eggs. "Perfect every time!" Incorrect.

No experience with an air fryer, but I made sweet potato fries in the oven Sunday night (with cinnamon, coriander, cumin, and a glug of olive oil.) 425deg. oven, 30 min. Used parchment paper and clean up was a snap.

My stove has 2 ovens. There’s a shallow ‘pizza’ oven, and then a standard size box. I don’t have storage space at the bottom. So while the pork roast is in the big box at 325deg, the potatoes can be in the shallow box at 425 deg. I love it.

*Sorry* off topic…

Oh no — another shopping disappointment! I know so many people that swear by their air fryers, but it’s another item I just can’t bring myself to spring for. My trusty counter top oven is trucking along and I’m very happy with it. Hope the shopping karma turns for you soon.

My first attempt was an epic fail. Sweet potato chunks with honey and cinnamon, which burned in less than half the suggested time and were both soft and dried out, no crispiness in sight. Topper...that recipe was from the brand's own website!

Before I smash the thing with a hammer and toss it in the trash...what do you like to do with yours and how do you use it?
