Sewing is one of my passions, but I don’t often find time for it since I’m in school. I’ve been learning to sew little by little for a few years. Mostly I just do mending (sewing on buttons, fixing unraveling embroidery, etc) and minor alterations like hemming. I’m really in to costumes, so I’ve made myself two cloaks, one silver with dark blue lining and the other black velveteen with black sateen lining. I already have three large bins of fabric and patterns waiting for me to get around to them. Hopefully I can dive into that this summer. When I do finish something I find it very satisfying. My mom sews quite a bit. As a kid most of my clothes were homemade. But she always sews from patterns. My hubby found a program that Bernina makes called “My Label” that I’m interested in getting someday to help with making some of my own custom clothes, but I’m only making an investment like that if I really get good at sewing and want to invest the time in it. Here’s the link incase anyone is interested: http://www.berninamylabel.com/

I also know how to sew and I hate it. Same with knitting. I only use my sewing skills for minor mending, and buttons of course. I used to sew a lot when I was a teen, kind of like your DD, shiny. Still I think that the experience makes it very easy to identify problems with garment quality.
Renee, Mata Hari was a spy. Before your explanation I was wondering if you were trying to convey something

That's interesting Renee. I thought Nenama was some designer I never heard of and Tahari--as in Elie Tahari. Go figure. Glad you cleared that up.

Yes, my name is Renee. =) Nenamatahari is a screen name I use. Back in high school I was constantly punished in German class for being naughty and had to sing German pop songs in front of the class for my punishment. That's where Nena comes from and people still call me Nena. Mata Hari is from the Bosnian band Hari Mata Hari. ;)

And I still can sing 99 Luftballons by heart along with about a dozen other 80s German pop tunes.

I'm like Nicole, can't sew at all. In fact, I've loathed that kind of stuff, needlework, knitting, crocheting etc. since elementary school. Sometimes we had to finish our assignments over the weekend and that always was a complete nightmare (not just for me, but for my mom too;-) I would labour over a small piece of knitting or so for hours and it never looked anything like it was supposed to;-)

But I do envy people who can sew, I think it would be wonderful to be able to buy a beautiful piece of fabric and make perfectly fitting dresses and skirts. But I also know a lot of people who can actually sew and hate it (like you guys are saying), so go figure...

Good for you Renee and Shiny.

I loathe sewing. It is NOT a creative outlet. I’m a cook and this is my other passion. I had my entire final fashion design collection sewn by a seamstress that I paid an arm and a leg for. But, I have spent time at lots of manufacturing plants. It’s part of your job when you’re a fashion buyer. I’ve seen how just about every retail product is mass produced, from bras and sneakers, to evening dresses, buttons and belts. I thoroughly enjoy the creative process as long as I’m not behind a pattern or sewing machine.

We look forward to seeing your own creations Renee! (are you Renee?)

I can sew, and I'm actually pretty competent. My mom - who never goes a day without sewing something - taught me. Like your mom, she can see an outfit, go home, make a pattern and whip it right up.

I grew up stuffing dolls and teddy bears that my mom would sew up, and wearing clothing my mom had made from scratch. That was the start. Then in 7th grade, when the styles went from bell bottom jeans to skinnies overnight, my mom refused to buy me new jeans since I hadn't grown much, so I learned quickly how to tailor bell bottoms into skinnies. It's not that hard to do!

Unfortunately, sewing bores me to death. I get bored of the material before I'm finished (even if I finish in a single night). So I haven't sewn anything since the girls were young: back then, I made them all sorts of adorable outfits. Kids clothes are so simple and quick to make.

But, I *hate* doing hems. I send mine out.... even though we have three sewing machines in the house (my old Singer, that I learned on; my DD13's Singer, and my DD15's serger).

My mom taught both my DD's to sew and DD15 has really taken to it. She buys old tee shirts by the pound at this place down town, cuts them up and reconstructs them into minis and dresses and all kinds of stuff. She makes her grandma so proud. :-)

I'm sure I could probably alter my own garments, but over the years, I've developed this aversion to sewing. I do often take clothes to my mom's when I see her and have her make the alterations for me.

Hand-sewing (like buttons) is a different story. I can do it, but I'm not very neat. I did hand-sew a dress once, when I was a teen. I still have it, in fact!! It took forever. I just don't have that sort of patience these days. And I just don't find it fun.

I can't sew to save my life. My mother taught all 8 of her daughters how to sew, including me. I was the only one who did not take to it. I can't even sew a button on without making a tangled mess of my thread! Luckily I have a mother and 7 sisters who can sew. Three of my sisters are expert seamstresses like my mother. Three are average, but don't enjoy sewing. Then there's me. But I can cook really well!

I sew quilts, but that's about it. I made a dress once--it turned out horribly.

I can do some basic things. I can make some blouses and some skirts. My mother is really good. She can go to a store, look at an outfit, make some mental notes and then go home to make a pattern and make the garment. I wish I was as good as my mom!

She's going to teach me some more advanced things, so I'm looking forward to it! I shall post the results!
