As far as changing colors, it happens to me with reds and deep pinks, but I've never had it not change back when the fabric cools off. I think it's something about red dyes.

The shininess thing can be avoided by using a press cloth (you can get them at hardware stores sometimes or buy a length of silk organza). Or you can just press instead of iron - don't move your iron, just put it down, allow the heat to penetrate, then lift before moving instead of sliding it across the fabric. Some fabrics are super-sensitive and you're better off steaming - you should be able to do this with a decent iron, just put it on the steam setting and hold it close to but not on the fabric.

I think that it's probably too much heat, and yes, wool and synthetics do that annoying shining thing. ITA with Sveta and Zap on ironing through a cloth and inside out.

You can try to iron through a thin damp clean cloth to avoid a contact of the hot iron with the fabric. I know that some wools are notorious for getting shine from ironing (that's why I don't like to iron wool at all)! We did it in my childhood when we had a very primitive iron without steam and multiple settings.

It can be the dye/fabric reacting to the weight and heat of the iron. My solution? I generally iron my clothes inside out and when I can't, I use a small thin cloth ( like handkerchief material) to layer between the iron and the actual garment. My grandma used to iron everything like that and it is stuck with me.
Last resort, I pull the steamer out.

And how to have it not happen?

Things that need to be ironed, and say to, but turn shiny or have the color change when you do. Is is too much heat or the steam? But I've had it happen on the coolest setting...even too cool to effect the wrinkles...and no steam.

Any advice? I hate to iron, but I really really hate it to ruin my clothes!
