I had my two top front teeth done when I was 15. My father worked at a hospital and he offered it to me one day, saying the dentist at the hospital would do it. I think it was free? Or low cost to my father. Otherwise, there's no way he would've offered! My teeth were chipped on all corners so they looked almost sharp. (I fell a lot riding my bike!)

It's been 25 years and I still love them. But, I fear the day when they fall off or loosen! I have no idea how much it will cost to replace. Also, my teeth were shaved down to nubbins, and I remember well the sensitivity of living like that for a couple of weeks while the veneers came in. I had to wait an extra week because I ended up needing a whiter set than was originally ordered. Back then, they told me it was the lightest color possible, but I'm sure now it looks quite dark compared to the blinding white teeth people can get!

The gap between the veneer and gum is getting more pronounced, but isn't noticeable unless I look very closely.

FWIW, I would be more scared to mess with enamel. I had a molar shaved down a tiny bit to correct my bite/TMJ, and that tooth is now unbearably sensitive. I can't even eat lettuce on that side. A new dentist told me that the old dentist took off too much enamel, and now I'm stuck with it.

bonding is a much less invasive procedure, they "paint" the product right on your teeth. They can mold and shape too. My daughter had bonding right after her braces to clean up some imperfections, and I had it as a filler for a chip. I kept losing the fill though, since my teeth aren't exactly aligned and my bottoms kept knocking it out. Much less expensive, is nearly permanent. http://www.docshop.com/educati.....ry/bonding

Peri I would recommend you get one or two consults on veneers. I would also look into zoom whitening which is the whitening that they do in the dentists office. I have heard of people having excellent results with this.

My mother has tetracycline staining on ALL of her teeth. Her teeth are a mid-gray and only look yellow where she has additional staining do to tea, etc. The contrast between the grey makes any additional staining look more dramatic.

My understanding is that bleaching often has no effect on tetracycline staining as the enamel deep under the surface is also permanently stained-- that the process would be similar to putting transparent white paint on top of dark grey primer. However, I have heard that KOR deep bleaching (which is relatively new) can have an effect -- it will lighten the staining on the surface but must be maintained. It depends on the degree of the tetracycline staining.

Most dentists will recommend veneers if it bothers you enough to mess with your enamel.

Can't help beyond that, my mom has very healthy teeth so she has always opted to leave them grey--- As she has aged and her hair has greyed it has become less apparent that her teeth aren't white.

Peri, if your problems only relate to the colour of your teeth, I would seriously consider whitening rather than veneers. If your teeth are otherwise strong and healthy, it seems a shame to compromise them with the etching process that will be necessary, not to mention the cost.
If you do go ahead, do find out how long they are likely to last and if they might be liable to chip.

I also had tetracycline stains on my 2 front teeth. When I was in my early 20's I had crowns put on. I have not regreted it. I have had them replaced once, likely will have to do it once more.

My husband, a dentist, has promised he will do them for me (my teeth are not stained but they are small, in part because an idiot orthodontist filed them down in the front 35 years ago) but he keeps delaying because there is nothing functionally wrong with my teeth, so he does not want to etch the surface (which is required to attach the veneers.) I'm going to make him do it when I get un-busy with work.

Peri, Why don't you check into veneers?...Maybe you will find that they are not as expensive as it seems and maybe your dentist billing could come up with a reason you need them that is not cosmetic..like, your teeth need some structure so that you can continue to use them...
If having different teeth would make your heart sing, then, I would find a way to make that happen...
Sending good thoughts your way to get this project done...

Angie...gulp. I know! Another reason why I'm unlikely to do it.

Doubleh...scared now! But yes...

Crutcher...I have tried those trays multiple times. Tetracycline staining, unfortunately for me, responds very poorly to bleaching.

Veneers or nothing are pretty much my options. It is once again sounding like nothing! I just wish all the villains in children's stories weren't described as having yellow teeth!

If you are interested in getting rid of the yellow stains, why don't you ask you dentist about whitening trays?...a treatment that h/she can do in the office and give you the product to take home...Just a suggestion..
I have a mouth guard that I sleep in at night to prevent grinding...I have to smile each night when I suit up with the Draculan appearence...I would probably discourage a robber...That is not on your topic but it is funny...

I have veneers on my two front teeth bc the enamel never formed, so mine are covered by insurance. Have you exhausted all the other options like professional whitening, etc? It was a bit of a traumatic experience for me so I don't know that I could endorse it. The process was very long and I had to wear temporary veneers (probably as close to wooden teeth as we get these days) for 4 weeks while the porcelain ones were being fabricated. They do look great, you can choose your whiteness and they last much much longer than older versions. I think the expectancy is around 15 years...
As mentioned, my veneers were covered by insurance, but they recommended that I do all my top teeth that show when I smile- six I think- so that I could go whiter and they would all match. The additional 4 veneers were quoted to me at $8000. They offered a payment plan, but I just smile less broadly these days.
It's been about 10 years since I last did it and I've blocked a lot of it out, but I will try to recall any particulars and jump back in.

I only have one veneer on one of my two front teeth. It's porcelain I think and I've had it 20 years! Mine cost £115 all those years ago. Can't remember much about the process though. I've always been pleased with it. I had it applied to even up my teeth as one moved back a bit.

I don't personally have experience with this, but have clients who have had veneers put onto their teeth. It is VERY EXPENSIVE. Mind blowing actually. I fainted when I heard the prices. Try $34,000 - which includes alignment correction.

I have tetracycline staining and have been self conscious about my yellow teeth my whole life. I'm thinking of going for a consult for veneers. What has always scared me in the past is the idea of getting my teeth shaved down, but the consult people told me it is possible to do it with minimal shaving. I don't know what they consider minimal!

If you've had any, can you share your experience? And tell me some questions to ask at the consult!
