My whole closet isn't organized by outfit but I do select around 10 outfits and hang those together. It works well for me...it saves time in the morning by keeping me focused on a limited selection yet allows me to choose based on mood/weather. I wait until I am dressed to choose shoes and bag, often trying 2-3 different shoes. Probably because they are one of my favorite outfit components.

I have my spring and summer clothes in another closet. I've already got 20 outfits handing together in there!

I sort by type, then by color, light to dark. In my head I sort of plan outfits for the week based on activities and weather, but I assemble an outfit the evening before, sometimes 2 versions if weather is iffy. Sometimes this involves shoe polishing or mending. This saves so much time and stree in the morning and with practice one gets better at it.
Planning ahead is most useful to be creative or include certain pieces, but probably not as helpful for those who wear a "uniform".

I sort by color and then by type. I am not a plan ahead person unless I'm traveling. I grab what I feel like in the morning (usually a top) and can see everything in my closet so I can instantly tell what will match with it to make an outfit. It took a while to whittle my clothes down to a small enough number that this works. I really like it!

I always have a selection of put together looks ready to go in my closet ..Usually between 3-5 at a time... Since I am more of a mood dresser I grab one that fits my mood, otherwise I start from scratch... it is nice to have this back up and I've done this for about 3 years now and will continue it, since I've had such success with it...

I pull together each outfit the night before. I hang or lay out everything that will be worn the following day (including underpinnings, accessories, shoes or boots). This way, nothing is left to chance and perhaps blurred brain function.

Although I like your plan, I could not plan that far in advance because I usually take weather and mood into account.

My closets are arranged by season (all out of season pieces are stored away), type (blouses, work slacks, casual pants, etc.), and then color. All of the clothes are instantly visible so nothing gets lost or forgotten.

I have three closets available to me. In one, I hang all my bottoms and blazers. In another, I hang or fold tops. In the third, I hang outer wear. Based on conversations with friends, I have a "wealth of closet space." It is an older house, but yes, I do realize I have more space available to me than others might have so this arrangement won't work for everyone.

I don't do this myself, but I can see the advantage of it for a working wardrobe. Anything that saves time and stress on a work day has to be good in my opinion.

No I don't do this. I am too much of a mood dresser and rarely know what I want to wear until the morning. I hang first on type of garment and then colour..works well for me but I have thought from time to time about trying the system you use. Glad it works for you.

I don't sort my closet by outfit. However: I plan a week's worth of outfits in my head, considering weather, what's going on at work, etc. I mix and match a lot, so I don't have "outfits" per se. I put what I'm going to wear the next day on the outside of my closet door, including belt, scarf, and maybe undies. If I need to iron a shirt or scarf, I do that at night, too. I put the appropriate shoes in my tote, esp., this time of year when I'm wearing snow boots every day. I also make my lunch and set up the coffee maker the night before...makes life simpler in the AM!

Gosh, I wish I was this organised!
One big advantage of this system that I see is that you could be certain that the top/pants/knit you had in mind for an outfit was actually available and not in the wash/ironing pile etc!

I like the idea of planning ahead like this but I tend to dress based on my mood, so half the time I'd want to wear something completely different! And logistically, it would be difficult for me becaue 3/4 of my wardrobe is folded in a dresser (sweaters, jeans, tees, cardis) rather than hung in the closet (dresses, blazers, wovens and a handful of trousers) so I'd end up with clothing piles all around the room. Not that I don't have that now...

When I was working I would plan my outfits for the next day and sometimes I would put them out. Now I just put on what I feel like after I go to Yoga and walk my dog. Sometimes that is pretty boring. I look like a Yogi most of the time.

I don't do this but as someone who is knew to exploring her style -- I think this would be a very helpful tool in reducing some of the stress or the feeling of constantly creating something new. I work from home, so it isn't about time saving -- but about knowing the outfits that exist within my closet. Thanks for the post.

I don't but I've been sorting by silhouette and by color within that. Trousers vs. Tapered pants; shorter boxy sweaters vs. Longer and the hi- low or shirttail hems.

I'm wondering why I don't do more night- before prep , though, given the morning rush, and not believing I'm a mood dresser at heart- I' m more a weather dresser and slso usually know whether it can be a skirt day itms not--

so I'm thinking of whether I could form a new habit and hang up my outfit. I do that am sometimes, but it's not automatic.

I choose 5 outfits on Sunday and hang them up in a row. If asweater is included, I may leave it folded in the drawer to avoid stretching out of shape, but everything else, jewelry and scarves, except bras and panties go on the hanger. It gives me lots of peace of mind and saves time.

I am feeling much happier with my wardrobe now I sort by outfit. I make up about 10 outfits each weekend when I bring my laundry back. It seems to be my magic number for choice but also so I can grab and go if needed. I need to get better about putting undies and jewellery into the mix but that might complicate things... Does anyone else do this?
