Sadly, shrinkage is a huge issue for me. Even washing in cold on delicate and hanging dry often leads to irreparable shrinkage in rayon and viscose, so I often avoid buying for items that I don't want to have to dry clean. I do love the feel of the fabric, though.

I, too, love viscose and rayon for its drape and breathability. My sensitive skin doesn't like polyester, or wool.

For upkeep, I avoid using the dryer with my viscose and rayon garments. Alas, I find that, even with gentle care, viscose doesn't have a long life - it will pill and lose its oomph after 3 years.

I also love viscose and rayon garments! My pet peeve is polyester lining on a cotton jacket or wool coat. Viscose/rayon breathes so much better. My euro coats seem to all line in viscose or Acetate. Searched high and low and finally found a 100% viscose trench... Also I love rayon dresses for high summer. Feels even better than cotton for me.

Nay! I'm not a fan of viscose like you are. I guess I'm pro natural fabrics because anything you have to process so heavily to make is probably not very eco friendly.

But kudos to you for professing to your passion and I commend you for that.

Is viscose just rayon then? I'm iffy on rayon. Often too limp looking (I don't wear linen much, either) and I feel hot in it. Also it shrinks perpetually. If the waistband is cut a different way than the rest of the garment (for economy) then the waist gets perpetually smaller.

I have liked a slinky travel knit dress I have since it is skimming all over and feels cool that way.

i love viscose especially since i developed a contact allergy with wool of any sort. agree with shrinkage post wash even if not dried.

Environmental issues notwithstanding, I do tend to like fabrics that are blended with viscose and modal. A lot of my scarves seem to be made of viscose, and I like it much better than polyester as a faux silk. I haven't had the shrinking issue much, but then I don't have a dryer so my clothes are always line-dried, which may help with that.

I love viscose (and rayon and tencel), especially in a woven fabric. It breathes and drapes nicely like silk. I wish I could find some blouses in this fabric. Any of these are far superior to 100% polyester for a blouse in our extreme heat.

I live in Europe and many of the clothes I buy are Italian made...perhaps it makes a difference in the blends. I just checked and most of mine are a viscose/silk or viscose/cotton mix, the only exception is a cardi made of viscose/cashmere.

Sorry to be a viscose hater. India Flint wrote a great book called 'Second Skin' about fabrics and how they are made and goes into great detail about all farics. But viscose and rayon which are the same thing are made of wood cellulose, but it uses a chemical process to liquify, it into a state which can be turned into a thread, It isn't good for the environment. I also hate it because It always shrinks. Not always on the first wash either which is maddening. You might wash it several times then one day it will shrink for seemingly no reason. The reason they mention bamboo is that there are two ways to make bamboo fabric and one of them is similar to viscose. and also not good for the environment.

Diane, thank you for enlightening me! I was convinced viscose was synthetic. Perhaps I'll branch out into more viscose sundresses this summer; I bought a couple of knitted cotton dresses last year that are already shrinking something chronic. If the sleeveless purchases work out, maybe I'll be brave and buy some with sleeves!

Yes I have several sweaters and jersey tops in viscose or blends of it. It is a natural fibre and breathes like cotton. One drawback is that some fabrics may shrink a little when washed, usually only in length though. I sew and have used it many times, I often pre wash fabrics though.
ETA modal is semi synthetic where as viscose is a mostly natural fibre made from cellulose., I just googled it. Though some sources say otherwise. I have seen bamboo blends classed as viscose and that is natural. I guess it depends on the source used.

Hmmm, I had a cotton/modal blend 3/4 sleeve top that didn't work for me at all. I used to overheat in it way too much and my sweat destroyed it after about 6 months. Maybe I'll keep viscose for sleeveless items.

Yes I have some viscose pieces which have washed well and drape nicely. I particularly like a viscose silk blend.

Viscose is actually quite a wide term, you will hear rayon mentioned more frequently on YLF and rayon is part of the viscose family.

ETA - after googling like a googler it appears viscose, rayon, modal and lyocell are all manufactured in the same way but may use different sources such as wood pulp.

I'm unsure about viscose. I always lumped it in the polyester camp (as in, "man-made fibres, urgh! That's going to make me sweat profusely"), but then I bought one viscose dress last summer and got on with it fine. It was sleeveless, though, so I'm not sure what a shortsleeved or longsleeved top would feel like in viscose.

In the last few years I have found myself buying more and more things made out of viscose. I find it a very soft material and cool in our very hot , humid summers. I rarely see it mentioned on here so just wondered if anyone else liked the feel of it....or is it not available generally where you live? Thanks xx
