Fantastic! And, do people in each of your respective climates think this crazy weather changing is unique? It appears from this thread that is indeed more common than not, except for those who live in the hot and hotter climates. (I've been there too- spent 9 years in the AZ heat!) Glad to see I'm not alone in experiencing the swings.

I didn't mean to imply that I put away my "summer clothes"- no need for that. I always have everything available in my closet regardless of season. (There's not much!) Plus, I often wear a sleeveless blouse underneath a blazer or jacket in fall/winter. It was more a question of those "definitely summer" outfits like those involving sandals and pretty summery dresses.

Another example to prove the temperature swing point: I went on a field trip to see bats emerge from underneath a bridge with SO's DS this evening and NEEDED MY PUFFY WINTER COAT. Yesterday it was in the 80s.

wow. i live in a tropical climate, so there are basically only two weathers; hot and really hot, but mainly really hot lol. that means i'll be in summer wear all year round.
i'd love to experience winter sometime. maybe that'll give me an excuse to finally get that boot i've always wanted.

I'll stretch sping/summer colors through Sept on the lingering hot days. Then switch to fall/winter colors when the heat goes past Sept. I just feel odd wearing white trousers or a petal pink shirt in Oct or later.

Oh yes, totally like that here. People always say "if you don't like the weather, just give it a minute." I just wear whatever matches the weather of the day. I probably go for more fall colors after September and avoid the pretty springy colors, but other than that it's anything goes.

I am in south Alabama, and it is just hot. Our summer seems to last forever. If you blink Fall and Winter are over. (although we did have snow last year for one day - they closed the schools, and city government offices for such a rare event) I really envy those of you who can buy wool sweaters and boots.

Weather as you describe is the norm in Kansas too. I often think of it as the seasons having a battle as the great air masses clash overhead. Some days summer wins, some days fall or winter, and some days can have both within a few hours usually with tornado warnings thrown in. It's a good argument for keeping a small closet with everything available.

I'm in the Rockies too, and I definitely know what you are talking about. I think that entire range tends to have a bout of cold weather in September, even August, and then it will come back in and we will have Indian summer for a couple of weeks. Down where I live we tend to have two coldish weeks in August because we get mosoons. Then it starts to really cool off at night, but we will still have high daytime temps. Then we will have a couple of weeks of hot weather in the 80s and 90s and then it will go back to being cold and the low nighttime temps will creep into the days. Couldn't tell you how to dress for it, since this is my first year back in this climate in a while. However, I do keep all my clothes in my closet year around. That has more to do with having a small wardrobe and lack of storage space elsewhere.

Our springs and falls are like that in the East coast as well. What always takes me by surprise is the adaptability of college students. They lose no time to pop into their mini skirts and flip-flops, even if the weather changes for only a couple of hours.

Yep, Mae, the weather here in North Carolina can be downright goofy, especially this time of year. In late September and early October, it's not unusual to need a shot of heat in the morning and air conditioning in the afternoon! I'm prepared for anything - I dress in layers of natural fabrics - fine-gauge cotton sweaters, rayon/linen tops, thin cotton tanks and tees and my ever-present jeans. I have lightweight denim for summer, medium and heavy weight jeans for cooler temperatures. And my recent discovery of the 'messy' scarf adds fun and color to the fashion mix. I love chewy's dark nail polish idea - I'm into purples now.

Same here in Ottawa Ontario! Yesterday was swimming weather, today is fall like. Temps will go up and down like that for a few more weeks and fall will "really" hit around October. I literally have both my summer and fall stuff available to me right now, and dress according to the weather, not the date.

I'll put my summer stuff away (sniff, sniff) in October and won't see it again til I go South on vacation in the spring...

Our weather is like that, too. Yesterday was 100 degrees, today won't even get up to 80 and tomorrow is supposed to be 75, and then it is supposed to warm back up again this weekend. We should have another 100 plus heatwave in September, and then it keeps flopping back between seasons until December when it gets cold and stays that way. I don't keep my clothing separated by season so much- I just wear what the weather dictates and what I feel like wearing. If you want a more fall look even when it's warm try more muted colors, a fall bag, darker nail polish and light layers.

Oh, sure! We are like that throughout the spring and the fall in Chicago.

I actually keep most of my clothes in my closet year-round. I only put away the heaviest clothes for the winter (thick wool sweaters, turtlenecks, etc), and the most summer-y for the summer (bathing suits, shorts) -- and those I wait until the season has fully changed before I do. So the "summer" stuff will probably stay available until November, and the winter stuff did not get put away until almost June this year. It's just too unpredictable until then!

Gosh, it just depends. If we hit a 100 degree heat wave next week I'll have no trouble wearing a dress and sandals. After the end of September I might be a bit more picky about how I dress for warmer days. I think my denim vest will be a great way of adding a hint of fall to an otherwise summer day outfit.

So... what do you do? Do you break out the summer sandals again or try for a "warmer fall" look? I'm sort of enjoying going back and forth, but I imagine there's a tipping point...

...where the weather waffles back and forth a lot during seasonal transitions? I imagine our Boulder YLF-ers might know what I'm talking about. Summer one day, fall the next two, then back to summer, perhaps a foray into winter temps, before finally settling into fall for a week or two, followed quickly by full-on winter? (Did you follow that? There will be a quiz.)

I've always looked at this wacky high altitude weather as a challenge, but maybe it's not so bad. Yesterday in white denim...today in tights and boots. What say you? Is your transitional dress determined by the date or the weather or a combination of both? What happens when the temps take a turn back into the 80s when you've already broken out the fall wardrobe?
