It's incredible how often on YLF there occurs some sort of telepathy!

I was thinking of this problem just this morning. A friend of mine recently gave me as a gift a white blouse, and it does this trick!

I have not read all the comments yet, but I think there is something wrong with the construction of the blouse.

I only have one blouse that does it, and I'm not sure why. I know it's not my body. Sometimes I wonder if some items just get sewn improperly, the pattern cut out incorrectly, or something.

I went to my seamstress with this problem on a jacket, and learned it is both a cut and fit issue. Cut: boxy, 1960's mod-ish styles. It has to do with the shape of the shoulder and sleeve (too roomy). Fit: garment too wide at the shoulders. But on boxy cuts, if you fix the shoulders, you are stuck with a waist that is suddenly too roomy and must then dart the bodice.

So it seems it is due to the current trendy cuts and not our bodies.

Hmm. This is so interesting. I always have the opposite problem. Tops totally moving toward the front, and then the necklines becoming even more "too low" That might be more a factor of the current style fit issue which bothers me most: v and crossover style necklines are too low for my taste - possibly because the to-me acceptable viewing area of my neck to upper bust line is very short.

My overall theory is that the patterns are not cut for actual body shapes. More traditional pattern design gave a longer cut to the back shoulder area and shortened in the front area - neck to upper bust line. You would think this would make the neckline want to ride up and to the back, but conversely, it allows the garment to already have enough room in the back/shoulders area, so the whole garment does not try to shift itself backwards.

Liz A, if the neckline poofs out at center back - I get this, too - a shortish dart can be taken in at the center back seam. That's what I do. Or if no center back, a shallower dart either side of the center back may work.

Una, I don't know if the sewn in lead weights would work, but I hope they would 'cause it's the most retro charming idea I've ever heard. If it's good enough for the Queen's skirts...

Yup, I get this too, but as I sew it's only in shop bought items that it happens as I can adjust my own sewing to fit me. I have forward rotated shoulders and I'm reasonably broad, and I have high shoulders in relation to my collar bone.

Carter, I also had previously thought it might be a back thing. I suspect I may have some swayback going on. I wish I could find a picture of the way the neckline often poofs out on me on dresses when I stand with my shoulders back.

I think we are on to something here about the looseness of the fit, but then what option do we have? I don't care to wear fitted shirts every day. And I think when I'm in the dressing room I tend to stand up very straight to look in the mirror instead of my normal slumping and straightening routine. Maybe a little more research is required on the front end.

Yes and here is an equally weird solution - if the fabric can handle it, you can sew little weights into the hem seam to keep the shirt anchored in front. They do this with skirts, right?

Yes! I agree it is a feature of looser fit.
It also causes a reverse problem-- if I'm not careful to get the top aligned properly when I try it on, it's slid back toomuch and I will think the neckline is higher than it really is. Then if I'm wearing it and tug it down into place or plan to wear it tucked, all of a sudden it's too low in front and I'm exposed!

So, yeah, I have to check the fit, and may have to pass on a top that isn't " dependable" as to how it sits on my shoulders.

Interesting. I too have the hourglass, broad shoulders, large chest thing going on, and I have this issue. However, I always assumed it was something going on in the back that caused it. For instance, the top, whether or not it's tucked, gets pulled by my pants toward the back when I sit. Then, because of the boob shelf, doesn't fall nicely back into place when I stand.

I don't know. I'll have to pay more attention.

Thank you all for the detailed responses and commiserations.

Maneera, I think you are right that wearing more fitted tops may remedy the issue. I definitely haven't noticed it when wearing like a ribbed tank top or something like that. Hm, maybe why I noticed it relatively recently since looser tops have been in style.

I'm thinking about what Diana mentioned about a prominent sternum and what Vildy says about the shoulders being higher than the collarbone. I may have a combination of both of these things going on. I definitely notice a tendency to slump my shoulders forward and then if I try to use good posture and pull them back, immediate chokage!

I have it, too. It's a shoulder problem but not necessarily to do with broad shoulders. It can be related to having a forward or rounded shoulder and can also be related to where the collarbone is in relation to the shoulder line. If you think about it, if shoulders are much higher than the collarbone/base of throat, then a straight across boat neck or a crew neck will ride up (go straight across) and "choke" you.

For rounded/forward shoulder line, to fix it in ready to wear, you have to be able to add inches to the back piece where it connects to shoulder seam. Obviously, you won't have the matching fabric. Unless you've had to shorten it somewhere and then you could add the fabric to make a sort of saddle shoulder line look. Or you could add a contrast piece of fabric like a lace or accent color. You can choose to scoop out the front neckline more but it still rides up. Remember shirts that used to have a snap crotch? Those may work. :D Or somebody oughta invent a pin method whereby you can discreetly pin to your bra or bra strap.

In most cases, I just use this anomaly to my advantage. I hate camisoles and so I let tops that are just a mite indiscreet ride up. :D That's my version of slacker style.

This happens to me too! And I'm a pear shape without strong shoulders... I think in my case it's due to a combination of bad posture (forward neck) and rounded shoulders so stuff slides around. Also possibly the fact that I have a prominent sternum so my front chest below the collarbones but above the boobs kind of sticks out a bit, and I think that might push the tops backwards.

For me it happens mostly with loose fitting tops, both knit and woven.

Ditto here!

I'm another hourglass and my shoulders are wide. But I have a large bust as well. I kind of notice this ALOT with fluid fit, relaxed tops. And that's true for any material - knit or woven. I think we like the drapey fluid fit most on our hourglass bodies but that very fit means that the top can slide backwards (as its not completely fitted over the chest).

The only tops where this doesn't happen for me are fitted low neck knit tops with longer elbow length sleeves that are fitted. Once the top fits the arms and bust, it doesn't ride backwards when I move.

Example - Top in #1 easily slides backwards but the top in #2 doesn't, even though they're both cotton knit fabric. Fabrics with more slip, especially smooth polyster/rayon/crepe/nylon or silk wovens slide back even more.

Hello again, YLFers! I've been commenting here or there on other people's posts, but it's been a while since I started a thread myself.

Ok, here's my problem that I've been aware of for at least a year now but haven't really figured out why or how to avoid... shirts riding backwards! My shirts seem to slide towards the back and if the neckline is high enough end up choking me. I'm constantly having to pull my shirts back towards the front.

I feel like I've mainly noticed this issue with shirts I wear to work in polyester, rayon, or nylon type of materials, especially in sort of loose fitting flowy shirts like the one below.

Also included a picture of myself for those who aren't familiar. I think I'm an hourglass with broad shoulders? Shoulders are my biggest measurement followed by hips then bust (bust is also not small). Wondering how I can avoid being choked by my clothes. Thanks!
