Una - I have the same problem with my Banana Republic chambray button down dress! I was shocked the first time I wore it - because it was really quite loose when I was standing! Also - generally, I do not have this problem with button-down shirts - so . . . guess I'll try some fashion tape too!

OMG, Diana, that is brillliant. It's this dress.

http://www.cavells.co.uk/image.....520400.jpg

That is exactly what I'm going to do because it doesn't button all the way down anyway - I have to pull it over my head.

I have this issue with button down shirts all the time. It's why I have none in my wardrobe at the moment.

Sympathies, though, it is a pain. Fashion tape should help.

Can you get it on and off without unbuttoning? If so, I'd just sew up the entire front. I've had shirt dress buttons pop open on me (oddly, usually when the dress is too BIG) although for me it's usually at the waist, where I guess the bend when I sit down makes the excess fabric pouch out. Anyway, I never feel secure in a shirt dress that opens all the way down!

It fits fine when I'm standing - it's only when I sit that it's an issue. It doesn't happen with my similar shirts so it has to be something to do with the skirt part pulling the fabric down tighter. GAH!

Angie, fashion tape it is, at least for a start.

i have a collection of safety pins for this. the buttons tend to be placed too far apart on most shirts i buy.

Is it pulling because it's a little too small in the bust? I get this problem with button down shirts that otherwise seem to fit.

You need to do the sit-down test with this style of dress too, Una. It's a shirt - same bust gape issue. Have you tried fashion tape?

Have you tried wearing a tank top underneath? Or here's another option:

I am wearing a lovely Equipment shirt-dress today - it's not oversized but still the loose Equipment fit that is typical for the brand. And everything hangs beautifully when I am standing. But when I sit, I get gapping at the BUST. Not the mid-section or the skirt, where you'd expect. Why?! Who knew you had to do a sit test for a shift dress?
