Hi, I'm reaaaally new here but had to mention that I wore Docs all season long cocktailing in winter at a ski resort in Tahoe and had no trouble with them other than the tongue sliding around due to my large ankle bone. Mind you, I was pulling 9 shifts a week between both jobs and wearing these 90% of the time. I also have really high arches and wear Reebok walkers to work when it's not snowing, so I baby my feet, too. I found mine at Ross for like $39 or something crazy, but that was 10 years ago. In oxblood, no less.
But a better bet for warmth in snow and simple yet stylish - Santana Canada Penny boots I found at Amazon. No one would know from looking that they are polar fleece lined. They are more snug around the calves than most boots, though.

Elly, I know you didn't ask about this issue, but I'm going to mention it anyway.... Docs or other uninsulated boots may not be warm enough for walking around in a Colorado winter. Even with thick socks, unlined leather can be COLD! And certain leather gets stiffer in cold weather and thus more uncomfortable. I would consider getting a pair of Sorels (they now make cute ones!), UGGs, or other insulated boots that have an attached tongue (if they lace) or else zip, if you'll really be tromping around in snow. And get the Docs for fun!

Most Sorels have a removable lining, and they are now making some adorable styles.

http://www.endless.com/s/ref=t....._242169011

Another good brand is Bogs; they have cute prints and function as both snow and rain boots (warm to -40!).

ETA: Oops, I see you did ask about warmth!

Hmm, I used to have a pair of green docs as a teenager way back, and I don't remember any breaking in period. I do remember them being very comfortable and I wore them to death. They were the 8 eyelet (I think), leather. I have a question, how to keep the yellow stitching looking fresh and crisp? I think mine was getting dirty fairly easily...

Hi Angie, I got the 14 eyelet white patent docs (with zippers!). I was VERY glad I listened to you when I saw the 20 eyelet pair that my (much taller) friend bought- they would've swallowed me!

Elly I bought some 20 hole docs last year and found them comfortable fromt he get-go. However I remember my first pair of doc shoes as a teenager made my heels bleed even when worn with socks until they were broken in (were super comfortable after that intial horror period though). I don't know if its the style of shoe, the fact my feet are now used to docs, or a change in material/construction, but the dreaded break-in period seems less of an issue now!

Thank Ladies---

My nearest Nordstrom is a 3.5 hour drive. Born shoes and boots would be great, except they usually aren't wide/deep enough for me to add things to them.

Angie-- I have tried boots from merrell, frye, born, clarks, timberland, and many more. I would have to look up the styles. Hmm, thanks for the tips about Danskos. I have tried their shoes and they were horrible for me, but i didn't try to insert orthotics on top of their footbed. I honestly haven't had any luck putting my orthotics into regular shoes-- even ones with the removable footbed like Naots. Mine are almost 3/4 of an inch thick, and higher than that in the arch area so shoes are always cramped after that. But because I have fairly narrow feet, a wide width makes them too sloppy side to side.

I have 14 inch calves and 7(something) inch ankles. Being tall though I have no problem wearing boots that aren't a true tall boot. Midcalf or lower is fine too. Most of the ankle boots that come low on the ankles won't work for me though because I will get snow in them!

I am definitely going to have to start ordering, but just don't know where I am going to start. Like I said, I have tried almost every brand out there-- esp. the comfort brands.

I have the 20-eyelet Docs in pewter, and after a couple of wears, they are nicely broken in and definitely my comfiest winter boots for the bad weather. Like walking on pillows! And the foot area is kind of on the wide side which I think would allow adding insoles or other things in there.

Don't worry, Elly!

A little more info would help. Which boot styles have you tried? What is your calf circumference?

The good news is that you should have no problem fitting orthotics into boots. I have been doing that for clients for years! I'd start off with looking at the Dansko brand. Order in an many boots as you can and work through the styles. It's really the only way to do it.

Megan, which Docs did you end up getting? Patent Docs do rub unfortunately

Do you have a Nordstrom's nearby? I'd be buying there and taking advantage of their generous returns policy to return what doesn't fit/work with orthotics.

I'm totally in love with these in grey http://www.zappos.com/product/7654867/color/241523

I have a pair of the classic harness boots. Mine have lovely soft leather, and were the right size, but they just never stopped chewing up my heels. I just could never get them comfy anywhere else either.

The Franco Sartos look nice-- even if I had to go down half a size I would need a 7.5 or 8 though. I have had that brand on before, but would be afraid I couldn't wear a arch support in them. Thank you so much for the suggestion-- I know I am very difficult and it stumps most people--- I am stumped myself!

Wow Elly, that's bad luck! My Fryes (Veronica Slouch) were awesome on my feet from Day 1...which Frye style did you try?

I'm not sure what to suggest- I have Franco Sarto piston boots that are SO comfortable- they were 16 hours shoes from Day 1 (I do LONG work days sometimes!). They have a big sole too, so are perfect for rainy days.

Amazon has really limited sizes left- I had to go down half a size and they are still quite roomy http://www.amazon.com/Franco-S.....B002A7XXHS

sorry Megan, missed that! Hmmm--- good to know, esp. about the orthotics. I have tried to break boots in before, but I always fail. My Fryes were never fully broken in. I have flexible feet and it seems that the boots never mold to them-- rather my feet just continue to get manhandled by them. I wore my Fryes for weeks with no luck.

Thanks Angie--

I appreciate the advice. Any suggestions for boots for me? I desperately need a pair for this winter, but haven't had any luck. I need a boot that I can put my orthotics in, or even a super high stick in arch support (that is if I can still get a pull on boot on after that). I have tried on some from many of the comfort companies, and also own have owned Fryes that never ended up comfy. The only pair of boots I have that are comfortable are a pair of lace up roper cowboy boots from a cheapie company. They have a 2 in riding heel and I can wear them because of the arch and heel placement. However, they aren't waterproof (even with waterproofing) and have seen 7 or 8 years of hard use and need to go to the circular file.

Looks cute and begs (puppy dog eyes).

Mine are still new (bought towards the end of aussie winter) and they do rub quite a bit- they are best with trouser socks (like thick stockings) as there is less friction than with normal socks.

I think they'd fit orthotics fine. I ordered my usual size and they are roomy so I'm thinking of adding in these http://www.footpetals.com/Sexy.....d=KUcvw9Ls and these http://www.footpetals.com/8321.....d=KUcvw9Ls to make them more comfy.

Mine are patent and I think that they are a little harder to break in. Mine are not yet at the super comfy stage.

I own two pairs of 20 eyelet Docs - black and white. Here is the black:

http://youlookfab.com/2010/02/.....ress-code/

The white are much harder than the the black. The black feel like slippers after breaking them in for a while (4 wears). The white are harder but still comfortable. I knew this about Docs (wore them in the 80's), and was therefore fully prepared to go through the process again.

I LOVE my Docs. They are brilliant shoes for my climate and suit my style. I wouldn't recommend them to you though since you don't fancy the idea of breaking them in, elly. I'm also worried about your arches. The oxblood and patent are harder than the black and I wouldn't recommended those colours at all.

Hi Ladies--

I am about to embark on my first Colorado winter in a long time (lived in CO as a child, but moved away and have been gone for a long time). I am in need of some boots to wear as everyday shoes in the winter, walking through snow and around campus.

I wanted to ask you ladies that own Docs how comfortable they are? I honestly have the fussiest feet known to man (I have problems with the nerves and circulation in my feet, so they get cold easy and are often painful with or without shoes exacerbating the problem). I also have extremely high arches (to date I have only ever found 3 pairs of shoes that hit my arches) so I usually wear orthotics in my shoes.

I was totally shocked to find that Angie owned Docs because I always hear horror stories about brutal break ins. I generally can't stand to break shoes in, but if it isn't truly as horrible as some people make it sound I could probably wear my neoprene scuba booties (I used to dive, pre-heart condition).

So ladies, how was the break in for you? Are they really comfy now? Do you think I could wear my orthotics in them (I have regular feet, maybe a little on the narrow side)? Do they dig into your heel once you break them in? How do they fit around the ankle? Would they be warm enough for a snowy winter--- maybe with warm socks?

I am thinking maybe patent leather, or something in oxblood.
