Interesting discussion here Una.
The style of my closest G.F. I would describe as somewhat BoHo.
The others as casual and comfortable.
As Anne said, I sometimes feel a little 'shallow', and try not to gush about fashion too much around them!

My best female friends are mostly in jeans, tees and sneakers. Sometimes boots or ballet flats for a change. The 'student' look. Another one is heavy metal fan and dressed accordingly. One dresses very casual and sporty and another one is wearing what I would call 'alternative frump'. They are all not very interested in fashion and style and I mostly go shopping alone.

I find this an excellent question! Are you an individualist or more social? I'm more social because I would say there is style commonality between me and my friends. Bay Area Native style has deep roots and a strong hold on its children. But we are all so different, it's impossible for us to look the same. Which is un-ironically part of the principles of Bay Area Native style.

Good question! I have four close girlfriends and I would describe their style as follows:

1. Functional , streamlined and current - Modern Preppy

2. Retro/Alternative

3. Uniform of Crop pants and oversized tops - currently at home with 3 little ones

4. Modern Classic with a twist (my best friend)

And I have two friends in my new home town who love fashion and we do share this love.
one would be trendy classic and the other trendy.

Nope, I am the dressiest out of my bunch and that's saying a lot because I wear jeans almost every single day. But I don't wear sweatshirts or heavily printed/jeweled tops and I tend to wear more basic colors than bright one's.

While none of my friends share my exact style, I could not accuse many of them of not having any. I don't think becoming friends with any of them had much to do with what they wear, though. Certainly not the very old friends -- the ones I've known since childhood, before any of us had any interest in clothes whatsoever -- or even the ones I've known since university, although clothing may have played a minor role there. (I've been told that even then, I was highly recognizable as the little Birkenstock-clad flower child who regularly came in late for first year calculus. One good friend from uni probably approached me in the first place because I looked like a hippie).

The friends I've collected as a grown woman have not been influenced much by style, because I think the older we get the more we judge people by what comes out of their mouths, and we talk to them in the first place because we're thrown together in circumstances where you need to interact, like at work or when minding small children. One of my best "mom" friends -- one I met through my kids, that is -- wears stuff that looks seriously terrible. I know that sort of thing's subjective, but honestly, she doesn't have a clue. But she's smart and funny and warm-hearted, and I love her. I couldn't care less what she wears.

I turned one of my work friends on to Fluevog shoes, but other than those she's a pretty classic dresser. In all honesty I think my style has most of my friends pretty flummoxed.

Let's see, my closest women friends are:

1. Classic a la Ann Taylor, Talbots, etc.
2. Casual MOTG (though I've never seen her dress for work, I'd guess she is fairly classic)
3. Doesn't care at all - neat, clean, serviceable but not at all into fashion
4. Very casual with elements of arty eclectic (tunics, scarves - she's traveled and lived all over the world, so lots of jewelry from her travels, etc.)

Two of my closest friends are men, and they're both very very casual:

1. Jeans, T-shirts or the occasional untucked button down, Converse. I think he has at least six pairs - orange, black, green, charcoal, and I think I'm missing a few. They're kind of his trademark.

2. Jeans, button downs, Converse or hiking boots

What strikes me about your group is that everyone (except the one) seem to have different and fairly defined styles, which is fairly impressive actually, especially given your environmental factors (except maybe #2 athletic gear). Most of my close friends, the MOTGs I see a lot of and even a lot of coworkers do not have a defined style. It's a range from some degree of not caring to trying to be presentable with some trendy and/or classic elements. The stylish are the exception and stand out. So maybe what you have in common with these women is that you DO care?

Apart from my YLF friends? No, I don't think my friends have ever really shared my style. The one friend I used to have who came close was much, much more punk verging on techno-goth, while I was more into glam rock at the time.

female bff is sort of Cali-luxe-bohemienne-bombshell
male bff is neo-beatnik-academic
DH is... grunge-skater* with a Beck-ish lilt
my long-distance bff is also kind of a tomboy, but less interested in fashion. sort of 90s-meets-rockabilly boy.
my sister is an island girl with sk8er/surfer/snowboard influence.

*Note there is a big difference between a current-generation sk8er and the skateboarders when my DH grew up in the 70s/80s.

Well it's funny because most of my friends have worked in some form of apparel biz for most of their careers but they are not too into fashion per se. It's variations on uber casual.
Maybe it's a Bay Area thing? Denim is everywhere (and half my friends have worked for the two leading denim providers in the country...Levi and Gap forever) so that's what you see.
One friend leans rocker style, one leans chico's, one leans more urban warrior. I think I am the sporty one.

Damn straight! Some sort of YLF Cotillion.

For me, no no no no no no no. There have always been sort of interesting dressers in my orbit, but not among my friends. Well, I did have a close friend a few years back (no longer friends), and she was my mentor and a huge influence simply in getting me to be observant and care about style. I learned about handbags from her. But her style was also quite different. Very classic, designer-y. And where I live now it's hipster, grunge, or otherwise maybe low-key arty. Good thing I'm happy shopping by myself.

Gaylene - We must have friends in common.
Other friends are mostly casual jeans & shirts types - well fitting, nice quality but not fashionable as such.

No.
Regarding Elisabeth's thread I think in that kind of a social situation I would be noticing more general impressions than what people are wearing just because my brain would be in overdrive.

I like Barbara's outfit there, lol.

None of my friends (other than Anna & Jenava) share my interest in fashion. A large number of my friends/relatives wear only black, ill-fitting clothes because (a) they always match; (2) they were on sale. The rest are strictly jeans and "witty t-shirts" and get really upset when asked to wear nicer clothes for certain occasions.

Mary - you would become a social isolate in my town. Fully half the women over 50 look exactly like BS in the photos you posted.

Actually, BS looks a lot better than they do. The colours are flattering to her, they are well coordinated, and the fabrics luxe.

Only one of my real-life friends gives a hoot about fashion. Her style is unique, but probably falls somewhere in the category of rocker -- very different from me.

Of the others: one is sporty-natural and wears a lot of gear; one wears a uniform of knit tops and ponte pants; one aims primarily for eco-friendly clothing and is less interested in its style -- but when she does buy for style, likes a much more feminine look than I do; one wears jeans and sweaters of no distinct style, with the occasional colourful shawl.

Oh - and one other friend *would* care about style in another world, another life -- she is an artist and writer but lives on a farm, so rarely gets to express her own style preferences. The few times I've seen her dress up, she has always shown some distinctive touch, yet I wouldn't call her Artistic Eclectic, exactly. Classic with an Eclectic wing, perhaps.
