I also use the hood on my parka quite a bit in the winter. I can't wear toques; my hair is fine and slippery and they pop right off the top of my head. Usually I wear a beret, or sometimes a headband to protect my ears better. </p> <p>I also have a sheepskin-lined brimmed hat that's lovely for warmth in the depths of January, but the black has faded from sun exposure in the rear window, and I haven't figured out how to fix that.</p> <p>In milder temps and minimal wind I'll sometimes wear a fedora or a more ladylike style of brimmed hat.</p> <p>Something about the width of my shoulder demands a wide brim... Like, if I wear a 3" brim it almost disappears, looks like a bucket hat with a 1" brim. Ear coverage is absolutely necessary. I mostly wear beanies/toques in the winter, occasionally lighter weight knit berets/tams. Most of my hats are gifts from my mom -- she's a fiber artist and always experimenting and thanks to her I've accumulated a wonderful variety of hats (and scarves and mittens) over the years. That said, my go-to is a bright red merino beanie that I found in a $2 discount bin at Sierra Trading Post (I guess just Sierra now) seven or eight years ago. Somebody said a hat with fine, thin and no root lift-flat and straight hair +bangs (and specs:-)) is a mare and I did have these (except specs for only the last 12 yrs) all my life. BUT in the meantime- I always gather compliments when I wear one. I do not like the look or feel of beanies, berets, or cloche style hats on me. I do have a wide brimmed wool hat that I will wear occasionally. I have a coat with a detachable hood, but it reduces my peripheral vision when I use the hood. So I just wear the coat without the hood for safety. But it's tricky, since I have a big head and really don't like how many hats flatten my hair. I never wear beanies. I like berets, since they are snug only at the band, and the bigger the better. I've also knitted several vintage-pattern "skating hats", which are basically 3" wide headbands that tie. Sometimes I tie them under my chin and sometimes in back under my hair. I also just got a refurbished fur hat from Oliver Furs in Montreal, sized to my specification!
