I love the white Shiny & I think after seeing Angie's recent post in a cream coat you should do it! I can't be that impractical unless I were going to have a lot of coats to choose from, and I look better in medium to dark colors. Do you know what time of year J Crew coats go on sale? Also do you know if J Crew Factory ever have them? Thanks:)

ooh... i really like that! I don't think it's all that different than mine, except longer length. Hmmm. Will have to consider this. I would totally do the completely impractical white. :-)

Maybe I'll have to ask for this for Christmas...

Shiny this is the only pic I have so far. More to come! This is a 6 regular. I am 5'7" with a 39" bust, 31" waist & 38 1/2" hip I think from memory. I am also longwaisted & my legs are shorter than my torso by a tad I think. The color is a cool red which I don't prefer but you might. Of course there are many other beautiful colors. It seems very A-line to me & it is supposed to be less so than the Lady Day coat, which is why I chose it over the that one. It fits my shoulders, it fits my bust even with layers, though with the layers it feels a little constricted but I always feel like that in layers. To alleviate that I could open the top 2 buttons & be protected by a scarf. It fits waist even with layers. It is supposedly an inch bigger in the waist than the Lady Day Coat. I love the length.

I haven't tried this in the 4 but I tried the funnel coat in the 4 & it fit but a 6 was better with layers. I'm going back with this & my own heavier layers than the ones in the store I used to try both side by side. This seems big in the 6 without layers but doesn't look bad. I think it's just that I am used to fitted clothes.

I can't wait to see your photos -- would you mind shooting me a PM, to ensure I don't miss them? If the metro works on you, I might try it. And, it's quite possible the style of the Lady coat has been altered since I last tried it on years ago.

I know it's a nuisance ordering and returning but I have to say that this coat is one of my top fashion investments ever. I would buy another Jcrew coat in a heart beat. The coats are very well made, beautiful quality, and of course I also adore the blast of unusual color.

Hoping one of them works out for you!

Thanks Shiny. I think we may have discussed having a similar bodytype in the past. I guess I will just keep ordering & returning until I find the right one from J Crew. I'm not in a rush anymore due to cancelling my NY trip but I have an airline credit I need to use soon so I may end up somewhere cold anyway. Also certain colors are starting to sell out. The Lady Day Coat has side pockets rather than the blazer style of the Metro coat, which means I can put my hands in them so I will give it a try. I buy a size larger for layering so that might help with tight across the bust issues. The Metro coat is OK across the bust in the size I ordered.

Elle, I got mine a few years back -- it's not a style they offer year after year. I needed a petite so I know it's a pain to have to order. I went to the store and tried on the various styles in regular, and then used best judgment on which might work for me in a petite. At the time I ordered two, including the one I kept and the Lady coat, which was not available in the store. I really really wanted to love the Lady coat, it just didn't fit me so it went back.

Let me see if I have a pic of my coat on my hard-drive somewhere... I haven't worn it yet this season.

Shiny which one do you have? I wish they had them in the store so I don't have to order & wait for it to ship & then return etc. Also they are too expensive for me to want to order them all at the same time to compare side by side.

I'm not sure what the difference is between the Metro and the Lady coat. I did try the Lady coat but found it to be unflattering on me -- too tight in the chest. Really meant for someone with a more delicate upper body/smaller chest. Too bad, because I really like the lady-like look. It just doesn't like me.

I have the Jcrew coat with thinsulate -- it's neither the Metro or Lady Coat, but is double cloth. It really is warm! (Mind you, I tend to run warm as it is.) I can and do wear it in the depths of Boston winter. I pull out the down coat/puffer only when the weather is sloppy, because water spots do show on the Jcrew coat and take awhile to disappear, and also I want to keep it looking nice.

Please note, the thinsulate lining makes the coat quite heavy. It's much heavier than a puffer, but still easier to carry over your arm once you are inside, since it's not so bulky.

Thanks ladies:)

Suz it says on the thinsulate tag that it is twice as warm as down. Is that misleading? I trust those of you who have actually worn the J Crew double cloth with thinsulate coats. Should I just use them for 30 & above & get a down for colder weather? I do run cold.

Anyone know the difference between a Lady Day coat & a Metro coat? Is it shorter? I found a tomato one on ebay.

Also does anyone know what the heathered Caramel color is like? I found one of those on ebay & it looks darker than the camel for sale currently. That is what I am hoping but I can't be sure online & there are no returns with this.

Definately gloves. For early autumn and driving I wear leather gloves, for the depths of winter thick gloves. I've found mittens to be much warmer than gloves with fingers, mine were from H&M knitted with a fleece lining, on really cold days I added a thin pair of silk liner gloves for extra snugly ness. This year I have bought some 'gear' gloves similar to these http://www.blacks.co.uk/clothi.....e=15465761 as its a cold nuisance taking my gloves off to text, apply lip balm, blow my nose of tie shoe laces while on playground duty x

It depends what you mean by "cold." I know you are coming from a warm climate. You may (or may not) feel the cold more than someone who is hardened off like I am.

Having said that: I live in Canada and the idea of going without gloves between November and March is pure insanity. I MUST have gloves, and if I am outdoors for any length of time, I actually need down mittens, (and even those don't keep me warm enough because I run to Reynaud's syndrome.)

So...gloves AND pockets is my short answer. You lose a lot of heat through your hands, head, and feet. Ensuring those are warm will help you feel comfortable overall.

The Metro coat is not really a true WINTER coat for where I live. It is an in and out of the car coat, a walking coat for warmer winter temperatures. (I.e. around 30 F) But I would wear it with scarf, gloves, boots, maybe a hat to ensure warmth even at that temperature.

I don't bundle up much by most people's standards, especially considering I live in Canada, but even for me gloves are a must. So are pockets, though...to store them in once I get back indoors. Best of luck with your coat hunt - I know iit can be awfully frustrating. But it's worthwhile to be selective. Personally, pocket size/placement/style would have the capacity to be dealbreakers for me. A coat is supposed to be functional above all else, afterall, and pockets are a key component.

What about fingerless gloves? I wear those, or else wrist warmers (which cover your knuckles and palm, but not fingers). It doesn't get all that cold in Vancouver, so you can get away with fingerless gloves, which don't impair your dexterity quite so much. I don't think that tactic would fly in, say, Ontario. I don't know where you live so I don't know what you mean by "cold" -- are we talking Minnesota cold, or Seattle cold?

The glove/mittens like anagybe posted would have been my solution, too. I prefer hands in pockets, but when it is truly cold, a person needs to have their hands protected when carrying things or having them outside of pockets, too. Cashmere or fur lined leather mittens are my solution, as mittens are always warmer for me than gloves.

I will post pics of both coats on me as soon as I can to see if YLFers have a preference. As far as color goes, I'm wondering if I should wait & do PPP like Angie does. I'm not attached to red but don't want black. If it is red I prefer tomato. Any warm color would be good or grey. Tweeds are best option for lint & cat hair camouflage. J Crew has a heathered Camel, & a cream, which sounds perfect for a warm colored person but I don't look so good in light colors. I guess I should wait, especially now that I have cancelled my NY trip. I may be able to get by with cashmere under a wool jacket in LA until I find the PPP coat.

Both gloves and pockets. Plus, I just like to put my hands in my pockets even when it's not particularly cold.
If a coat doesn't have comfortable pockets it's a deal breaker for me.

Angie do you mean leather gloves lined with Cashmere? You said you put your hands in pockets as well, does that mean you don't wear the Metro Coat in colder weather?

I wear handknit gloves or mittens usually. The most convenient are the convertible kind like Anna linked.

Both! I don't think I could handle a coat without pockets, my hands are always in 'em.
