I have always been a part of the "my size is gone by then" club--I'm petite and relatively small-boned with tiny feet--but until recently I only (as in 100%, aside from H&M and Forever 21) shopped sales. And I still found fab items that I love! But, I also passed up items that I would have adored because they sold out. I alleviated this problem in earlier years by simply not even looking at full-price merchandise... but as I'm getting pickier (and my budget is getting bigger), I find that buying at retail price can sometimes be worth it.

I'm on SYB, and there are enough wardrobe holes that I've usually got my purchases planned 3 months out. So, I both do and don't shop sales.

I wait for sales if there's a specific retailer's item that I need to get, because I can wait for a retailer-specific markdown instead of the general end-of-season sale. For example, Banana Republic tends to push 20%, 30%, or sometimes even 40%-off coupon codes on Wednesdays.

I do not wait for sales otherwise, for the reasons other posters have mentioned: the full price (plus adherence to the budget) prevents me from buying thoughtlessly, I can enjoy the item for longer, etc.

I have had luck with sales, but I also made many mistakes with things that seemed to be real bargains. I'm trying to change my mindset and do less sale shopping in favour of investing a bit more in wardrobe workhorses, but this isn't an easy approach with a small budget. But I think I'm getting better!

Note to KikiG - AT will do a price reduction in these circumstances if you call and ask.

I used to be an only on sale girl. But my closet analysis demonstrated that all my mistakes are things I bought because they were cheap and/or on sale. I always love the full price, nicer stuff I keep.

Of course, I wish I was a good enough shopper to buy the right stuff on sale!

It depends.

I just bought a suit at AT. I urgently need a "lawyer suit" for work. This is less about fashion than function, but naturally I want to look nice. But what do we know about AT? Things eventually go on sale.

So, I ordered the jacket I liked with 3/4 sleeves at full price just to see if it would work. It did. Yippee! Even better: Today it went on 40% off--another one is heading toward me, with a 40% off skirt. The full price one gets returned. I win. (Photo is unstyled, jacket is with unmatching pants and was and taken by my son for the purpose of me being able to see my rear view.)

But generally, with being short, and having various fashion and fit and figure issues and not having a ton to time to shop, it is a total victory to find something I really like and that is flattering and meets my needs at full price. I am convinced that "shopping like a man" (usually from a list) and paying full price most of the time for something really wonderful is actually a money saver **for me** than constantly "shopping like a woman" looking for "bargains."

It depends. If it is a core need item and by that I mean something that I will wear over and over and anchors a lot of my wardrobe AND I am pretty specific about what I want it to look like : NO. I don't wait. It may be gone. For me, that would be a black or navy blazer maybe in pinstripes. A shift dress because those are so hard for me to fit. If it is something that I have been wanting and looking for for years, I also don't wait. Otherwise, if it is something that I love or like with a relatively easy fit or alterable, I wait...because there will always be more and different and interesting.

Last year I bought two ponte knit JAG pants. I paid full price and I am glad that I did. They are work horses for me.

I have a self-imposed price limit for things, so even if I don't buy on sale, I don't pay more than a certain $ amount. That alleviates the guilt, lol!

Not if I want a particular item. Usually what happens is it's a thing that never makes it to the sale, certainly not in my size.

When I feel poor, I just go straight to the sale section and see what finds are to be had there.

But here's something: I got this blouse at Marshall's - no really - that I swear is one I passed up at, as they say, one of the big department stores not long ago.

Really expensive items, I sit on my hands and see how motivated I am a month or two later... and if the universe is with me on this by keeping the item around for sale. More often than not, frankly, I don't even remember.

If I find something I love on sale, great!

If I find something I love not on sale, but it's not ureasonably priced, I will buy it because often by the time something goes on sale, I can't find my size (I just love it when I flip through the rack and it goes 00, 0, 2, 12 -- grr!).

If it's something I need to fill a wardrobe hole, I don't wait for a sale, as my size will almost always sell out. If it's something I don't need but would love to have at the right price, I patiently wait for a sale. Sometimes I get awfully lucky when I wait; other times I miss out. Lastly, I try not to buy anything on sale that I would not be willing to pay full price for UNLESS the price is ricidulously low AND I know I will wear it a lot. I have a rather lengthy mental checklist I go through each and every time I shop, and that keeps me from making too many mistakes.

I am really trying to change my "sale-buying" ways, because they lead me to no good. True, sometimes I find something super. A nice addition to the wardrobe. BUT. I am not yet in a position to be worrying about "additions." I don't even have the basic building blocks! So buying on sale is creating a mess all over again. Sigh....

I used to be "only buy on sale" kind of girl but I'm slowly changing that mentality. I find always waiting for the discount leads to more poor choices on my part - I'm more willing to settle for less than fab items because the price is low and those are the only sizes/colours left, you know?

This year's NAS changed my thinking - I did my research on the items I was interested in and budget allowing, pulled the trigger. I didn't want to wait for fear of my size or colour choice no longer being available.

Always.

If it sells out, I get over it fast. The greatest thing about the rapid churn of fashion is that there is always something new to want each season, so I don't dwell on disappointment.

I've learned that by putting off a purchase, I often find it was more of an impulse (sometimes the YLF excitement and forum hype) and by giving myself a cooling off period to ruminate on the potential purchase I lose interest and am really glad I didn't click and buy.

I am very picky, even with sale items.

I never, ever wait for sales on shoes - my size will be gone. Whenever I find pants, skirts or jeans I love, I have a tendency to pay full price. I'm much more likely to wait for the sale on tops and shirts, which are easy for me to find - hey, I'm a pear! :)

I have wasted so much money on both full priced clothing and sale clothing, it makes me a little depressed sometimes. But I also remember all of the items I've bought and that I've worn to death, and I hope it sort of balances out. I'm getting better about being realistic about what I really will wear and more demanding about what I want. So sale is secondary for me in terms of finding a "bargain."

If it's a genuine gap in my wardrobe or an upgrade to something much better then I pay full price. If it's anything else I browse the sales. I had an ah ha moment about my sales shopping though - I wasn't as "picky" about these pieces & seemed to make more mistakes. So now before I buy I'm asking the question, "Would I pay full price?"

I LOVE buying items that are on sale but will happily pay full price if it is just right.
(Especially with shoes as I am a popular size.)
One of the large department stores in Australia has signs up saying 'The early bird gets their size'.
I also like to try things on in size multiples to be sure of the best fit, and this isn't always possible at sale time.

No, I don't wait for sales - unless I know its going to go on sale the next day or something - otherwise I am willing to pay full price for it (if its in my budget.) I am not good however, at planning my wardrobe or thinking in advance about what I need - so my buys are generally spontaneous buys of things that I absolutely love and cannot wait for the item to go on sale (at least I dont' think that I can!)

I have spent most of my life waiting for the sale and have ended up with a very disjointed wardrobe. The goal of getting a great deal led me to buy lots of things that were well priced but not necessarily the best for me and my lifestyle. Now that I am older I have decided to work with a stylist at Nordstrom and have her pick my clothes. I am buying quality, classic, well made clothes that will withstand the trends. Everything will be stuff I love and the quantity will be limited. I hope to build a small cohesive wardrobe and then accessorize like crazy to mix up the outfits. However, I will still go to H&M etc for the fun trendy items that I will be done with a year later.

I have also found that when I wait for something to go on sale, the season is almost over so I will not get much time to wear it and I do not seem to love it as much which is the same as Elisabeth mentioned in her post.

I almost always wait for a sale. My mom is the ultimate bargain shopper and has instilled that in me. Recently, I have moved away from the quantity shopping for more quality shopping, so I'm spending more for items. I can afford that but with the higher price points, I feel better if I buy it on sale.

Yes, I wait for sales, but I'm trying to retrain myself. Not to needlessly spend more money, but to be okay with buying full price because I am a grown adult who is worth the money and I shouldn't feel that I'm somehow not. If I can get a deal I sure will, but I have to stop not getting what I want simply because it's not on sale. That's silly. I don't do it anywhere else in my life. I get groceries on sale when I can, but have no trouble paying full price if this week there's no sale on my item, be it yogurt or wine or whatever. Gotta take that mentality over to my closet more

I am learning the hard way that waiting for the sale doesn't work out for me. Recently ordered a beautiful blouse from Nordstrom (not part of NAS - just a nice blouse) - of course, it was on sale when I ordered it. Ended up being too big on me, and when I went to order a smaller size...nope, all gone. And I *love* the blouse. I mean, I like it so much that I would have paid twice or even three times the regular price. I waited for a sale, ordered, ended up with the wrong size, and now I can't get it at all. Very disappointed.

Waiting meant missing out. And yet, the original full retail price wasn't very expensive to begin with - just that I'm conditioned by the "sale" mindset. The original price wasn't a big deal at all - I should have jumped on it right away instead of waiting around for it to go on sale.

If the item is within reason at the full price and you love it - I'd say you should BBQ (buy buy quick).

It depends on what it is. If it's something that I like but is one of many that could fill that hole, I usually wait on a sale. If it's a "nothing else will do but THAT particular thing" then I jump on it if I have the money.

Edited to add that I do agree about petite sizes vanishing fast. I'm learning that some things I have to buy quick because my size will be gone. That's especially true with jackets and blazers.

I'm with Angie on this, though I still struggle with the guilt, having been trained to buy on sale. As a petite if I wait my size is gone and the pickings are slim and I end up with a bunch of orphans or items that I've settled for, or just don't work, or make my heart sing. It's not worth it.

Nowadays If something is awesome and fits and is fab then I admit I barely bother looking at the price tag (we are assuming here that I am in a store that is within my affordable range!!).

To stay within budget, I recently switched to a seasonal shopping strategy. So I hit the stores 4x's a year for major spending. I didn't do that well with NAS (just one dress I'm keeping) so I still have most of my Fall budget to burn. I do still shop in other months, just do not spend anything close to that much. I.e., there is still room for the sale splurge -- but I'm much less likely to spend on sales items that wind up being so-so/orphans/etc.

I'd say I'm now probably 80% of my clothing budget towards full price/beginning of season; and 20% sales/end of season. Whereas before, it was the other way around. I am far more happy this way, and wear my purchases much more.

Never. If I find something I really like and it *happens* to be on sale, that's different. But if I like something enough right this moment to want to buy it, I do, full price or not -- assuming I can afford it, of course. If I can't, I go home with nothing! I'd rather have one new thing I really like than a bunch of things on sale that I sort-of like.

There are two main reasons for my attitude. For one thing, if I find something I like and wait until the price drops, they invariably seem to have sold out of my size! And two, if I wait until the end of the season, I can only wear the item for a little while before it's inappropriate for the weather, and then I have to wait a long time (sometimes a whole 'nother year) before I can wear it again. By then, sometimes the bloom is off the rose.

I think it really depends on a number of things Thistle. Sometimes my budget won't permit the purchase of a full price item or I may have to sacrifice other wants in order to pay the full price. Personally, I recognise that I 'need' very little and what I am dealing with are essentially 'wants', therefore I am often prepared to wait. Some of the stores turn things over so quickly it seems there are always sales taking place.
Sometimes I do stalk an item and if say it gets to one left in my size with no sign of a sale... then I might grab it. If there are a few left I might stalk a little longer. Yesterday I bought a lovely soft green satin blouse at full price, only two left so I knew I couldn't wait for sale. x
