They are gorgeous boots! What Greenjeans says chimes with me. Also, the turn of phrase, no compromise on footwear. Once you've decided, I wouldn't look back!

It makes sense to me in that if you had kept those purchased items, then you would have had considerably less to allocate to other new items. If you think you'll love them for years and wear them often, seems like you'd be more than justified in going for them!

The maths that I subscribe to is dollars per wear. If I know that there is longevity in an item or constant use, for example glasses and handbags, then the amount spent does not bother me too much.

My budgeting app, which uses a tech version of the envelope system, works well & keeps me on track. I'm so glad my DD told me about it! It makes things so much easier.

Aquamarine and RC -- me too! I do this far more often than I overbuy. I wait too long and then my size is gone in a pair of shoes that might have saved my extremely fussy feet, or a special item that I adored (in photos) is gone before I make my move, and my wardrobe suffers for it.

And as long as the item is not "final sale", there's no reason for me to so timid and cautious. I'm quite disciplined about returns -- if it's not right, it goes back within a day or two -- so I really could be freer with purchases.

Am I listening to myself?

I'm guilty of this too, LOL. But I will say I have learned not to compromise with footwear. My feet have become so picky. If they're comfortable, if i will wear them many years, if I can afford them, I am very likely to buy them.

My habit is to reverse-fund my purchases. Psychologically, that is -- I'd never buy something if I didn't have the money in the bank for it.

When there's something that feels exorbitant but I still really want it, I start looking at what I have in my holding zone and mentally tally up how much I'll make if I sell my holding zone items on eBay. Say I have 5 items that will each earn me $20 if they sell; that's $100 towards the Special New Thing. So, I put everything up for sale and order the Special New Thing and in my mind I've already got a $100 discount. At least it helps clean out my closet! :)

I do have that kind of rationalization at times. At least it sounds similar, but substantively, it's not the same.

I decide I'm going to buy X. I know I can fit it into my budget reasonably, even if it's a stretch or I know I'll need to be extra good the a month or two afterward.

Before I buy X (or within the return window), I see Y. It may be slightly higher, or lower, or about the same. And I reconsider X. Which do I want/need/can use more? I decide on Y.

Is this rationalization? I don't think it is. Because the money for the purchase was already there and set aside in my wallet, budget, or mind. Changing my mind about what I spend it on isn't any kind of specious reasoning or justification of a splurge.

The real issue is if I turn down X in favor of Y, and then forego Y for Z which costs is more than both of them combined. That's like April's original example, where I'd be counting the same pot of money multiple times. :D

I agree with everything you said so far, April. Perhaps there is a underlying budgetary sensibility that we share.

For what it is worth, I do splurge on select items such as leather goods. I have never splurged on what I considered trendy pieces (although I will buy knockoffs to experiment).

I will also say that I'm seeing the wisdom in getting the better item rather than the cheaper item, as long as I will savor it more deeply, keep it longer, enjoy it more.

What I am unlikely to do is to spend a lot on something trendy. If I'm spending, it had better be for an item that won't look silly by next season.

I totally agree with greenjeans. I had decided to better my work clothes. So the new items I was buying were less in number, carefully thought out, searched and double or triple the price. (I believe in putting my money on things I'll wear most. Not occasion wear). Now the problem. I no longer feel like wearing the perfectly good, fitting in my aesthetic but cheaper items any more. I have to force myself to use them so that they'll justify the cpw. But better, expensive, luxury things will do that to you.

As for an eg of boy math, my brother in law, does the same.
"I didn't buy (list of all the fancy, sometimes stupid gadgets he wanted), so I saved (a ridiculous amount of money), so I get to buy ( a slightly less stupid gadget for slightly less ridiculous price)."
All imaginary savings on real spending.
Beat that.

I am taking Greenjeans' words very seriously as well. In fact, they hit me quite hard and really made me think.

I will say, though, that the only time I spent even close to this much on boots was when I bought my black Aquatalias, four years ago. Have i been tempted, in the interim, to spend that much again on a pair of boots? Nope. Because I still love those and they still make my heart sing and are still in great shape.

So I don't seem to be the kind of shopper who "gets a taste" for expensive things for expensive things' sake and will then have to feed that habit. Thank you for making me consider the question, though, Greenjeans, because without considering it, I wouldn't have known.

Let me commend you for being a highly capable statistician and refusing to use the term "girl math." I wouldn't think a term like this would offend me as much as it does, but it does.

Now I will go back and read the rest of your post ......

I understand your dilemma. Those boots are beyond gorgeous. I devoured Alaskagirl's posts about the boots. My opinion is that there are times in life when a person should splurge on themselves. If you can afford the boots, you should buy them. They will make your heart sing.

Greenjeans has a good point: A luxury once experienced becomes a necessity. I always consider her point of view and budget accordingly. I suspect that you would budget accordingly as well.

A long time ago, when I was transitioning to working from home, I figured I could justify anything I wanted by not having to buy a lot of work wear, not needing new pantyhose every week (I was hell on hose) and always eating lunch at home.

Now I have transitioned more to, do I love it, can I afford it and will I really wear it as much as I think to justify the CPW

Banoffi, I have been thinking about "Londra" because if it's the kind of taupe-y grayish shade that it seems to be on my computer, it would go very well with my neutral wardrobe.

It's exciting that these boots are offered in colors like wine and deep blue, but I know those colorful colors would be less versatile for me.

Ooooh. Yes. Definitely my type of rationalization. Combined with my short memory where I'll forget what I purchased, I could definitely overspend. I have to stick to a budget or I'd be in trouble.

I'm guilty of that kind of reasoning, too.

Omg ...I just did this. Bought some stuff. Found some other stuff that I wanted more. Decided to return the first stuff BEFORE I even receive said stuff and have mentally freed up the cash to buy the second more coveted stuff.

I don't have enough mental energy to actually dress myself with all this mental gymnastics.

Your husband's magical thinking is hilarious! My SO has done some similar mental shenanigans to avoid unpleasantness or justify something unreasonable. Fascinating, the male brain!

I actually don't have a strict budget for clothing. I try to buy 75% on a needs basis and 25% on a fun basis (roughly) - the needs have to be loved too. I definitely have space for splurge/wonderful/wildcards - I just make sure I get them right.

Last year I bought two party/wedding dresses, I didn't actually "need" either but occasions came along, I have loved them - one has been worn five times and the other three times - not too bad. This summer I won't add to this part of the closet and have one occasion already lined up for these dresses.

For the boots, if you truly love them, you will honestly get enormous pleasure from them and wear them lots.

To even things out, here's an example of boy math. My husband thinks that having me write checks to the "concierge medicine" practice he goes to (the kind of primary care doctor you pay in advance, quarterly, so you can go as many times as you need to throughout the year) means he doesn't actually have to go to the doctor. Like, ever.

He believes that my writing those checks actually serves some preventive-care function. That's not even math, it's superstition. (And this man supposedly earned his MD once, long ago.)

Ooh, I'm so encouraged by how many of you think this way as well.

Now I almost feel that if I DON'T get those boots, I'm letting the side down...

I am a master of rationalization, and so thinking like this is right up my alley. I just try not to do it TOO often. I mean, as far as I'm concerned, the money has already been spent, I'm just changing what it was spent on. Or so I tell myself.
