There was something recently on our TV news about how the card services just add that tip line lately even if a business doesn't ask for it. It can be ignored.

I would feel a bit funny about paying in advance and then dealing with a receipt that had a line in there for a tip. Hmm...not sure what I'd do in such a situation.

In the meantime, I give tips sometimes when none are expected, but this is usually because I'm impressed with the level of service or quality of work, and mostly because I've been working with someone for awhile and have been happy with their service (example being my dog walker - I gave him a very big 'tip' at Christmas because he has done an amazing job). He was not expecting this and really appreciated it.

Hate to say it, but I really do feel a bit miffed with an 'expected' tip. I expect to tip food service professionals, cleaning services, cab drivers, and so on - but I would not expect this from a shoe repair place.

This would make me want to go somewhere else actually, as bad as that sounds.

OK, that's what I thought. Thanks for all of your input.

Deb, this is Connie's shoe repair downtown right by Capitol Square. They're been around for 100 years and do great work.

I get kind of angry at random tip lines too; I can tip if I want to ... and if your service is terrible/not existent, I will not tip.

I have never tipped my cobbler.

I don't tip my cobbler, but I've never seen a space or a jar to leave a tip anyway. I'm pretty sure they actually ship most of the jobs out to a central location where someone else does it. The person at the shop is just a desk guy.

It seems like lots of places are adding tip lines. I was at a frozen yogurt place where I had to get my OWN yogurt and toppings. The person at the register just stuck a spoon in the bowl and took my money, and there was a tip line and a tip jar! Maybe I'm cheap, but I don't really feel like handing me a spoon is worth receiving a tip. Sheesh.

Beth, it has never occurred to me to tip the cobbler. I wonder if we are using the same one - mine requires payment in advance, too.

Mmm, fruit cobbler, yummy.

Beth, I wonder if the line for the tip was part of a standard layout for the receipt? I see it a lot on credit card slips even for places that I can't imagine anyone tips - fast food, etc. Maybe it's the default when you set up your credit card machine or receipt printer?

Ok, I was trying to figure out why you would want to spill any of your dessert, but then realized you were talking about a shoe guy, not food. I'm slow.

Umm, seems like tipping run amok to me :-\

Most of my cobbler work is pretty pricey as it is!

I haven't been to the cobbler in years, but dropped off a pair of boots today. He requires payment in advance, which is fine, but I was surprised to see space on the receipt to add a tip.

Have I missed a finer point of tipping etiquette, or is this another example of American tipping run amok? It doesn't help that I thought the price was very high to do a small job, but also that apparently tipping was expected prior to the job being completed. Even if I was planning on tipping, I'd have waited until I saw the final job.

As it was, I signed the receipt without adding anything to the total, but left feeling odd about it. Your thoughts?
