Thanks to all for the excellent input. Great idea to check out Zappos; I'll do that now and then post some of my considerations here.

I think the boots have potential. But I’m on the fence about the cuff. I’d prefer to see you in a style sans the cuff.

I just want to add, it's really important to measure your calves first! I ordered a style from the wide calf boots website and they were way too big in the calf for me... it was sort of shocking. Since I wear a size 12 shoe the calf was around 20" inches and I was swimming in them. I guess I am right in between "normal" and "wide" calf boots, and I've actually found that stretching normal width leather boots is better for me and they look more proportional that way. I should post a picture of the leather boots I bought at Nordstrom that wouldn't zip at first but after being stretched they are perfect.

So that's just a word of advise -- measure yourself first!

Ooh, Mac, I love those boots! I think they would be very versatile and you could wear them with a lot of things.

My friend Margaret is also looking for boots. She found this site helpful:

http://womens-wide-calf-boots.com/

The selection isn't super great, but she said most of these boots are also available on Zappos, so you can order from Zappos if you want. The nice thing is that this site gives the calf circumference for every size (because it varies by size). She has 19" calves and wears a size 11 shoe. We've found a couple that *almost* work, but aren't quite wide enough in the calf, but I think she's getting close.

Mac, that boot has a 14.75" calf circumference. That is a fairly standard calf size and it would not fit me. You said your calves are on the wider side as well, so keep that in mind. Zappos has more info on the boot you linked to:

http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7564423/c/310.html

If I were you, I'd order 10000 pairs of boots from Zappos, have them all shipped to the hotel, then go from there. Returns are easy and free and Zappos has a massive selection.

This one has a 16" inch calf circumference which might be better:

Hi, everyone. I'm steeling myself and readying to jump on the Scrunchy Boot Bandwagon. I'd like a taller pair to wear with dresses (my calves are quite ample, so I don't think I'd be able to find any tall boots that would fit over skinny pants, even if I wanted to) and a shorter pair that I could wear with skinnies.

I live in Toronto but will soon be going to the US, and like to order online from US retailers and have the stuff - ready for try-ons in my room - waiting at my hotel when I arrive. There's a Macy's store close to the hotel where I'll be staying in late November, so I'm eying the Macys online site 'cuz anything I order and don't like will be simple to return at the store.

Anyway, my question is... do you think these boots look like a good place to start? I need the boots to be flat. I'd also like them to flatter my tall (5'11"), size 16, pear-shaped body. I worry a bit about the cuff - will they create a strange line and "cut" my body, when I want to create a long, lean line? Am I on the right track? It says the shaft diameter is 7"... isn't that crazily small? If not, are there any boots you'd recommend as a first pair of tall-ish scrunchies?
